okay so hear me out: I think I know exactly where all the kidnapped kids areβ¦ and yes, I said this before, but now itβs even crazier.
so obviously theyβre outside the wall that surrounds Hawkins, right? but outside the wallβ¦ thatβs Dimension X.
for anyone who hasnβt seen The First Shadow (aka the Stranger Things play), this is the dimension where Henry gets banished after his fight with Eleven, and also the place he got sent for 12 hours as a kid, which gave him his powers. DIMENSION X = POWER JUICE.
my theory (and yes I had it before season 5 even dropped): Dimension X exists outside the Upside Down. and the Upside Down? itβs basically a little protective bubble inside the toxic magic soup of Dimension X.
so hereβs where it gets wild: Vecna drags the kids outside the cozy protection of the Upside Down, into Dimension X, toβ¦ give them powers.
think about it: Vecna already siphoned powers from Eleven in season 3 using a Mind Flayer parasite. the kids now have a βtube down their throatβ thingieβ¦ essentially a Mind Flayer snack thatβs giving them powers.
BUT β and this is key β I donβt think Vecna is the real mastermind. the Shadow Monster, the OG inhabitant of Dimension X, is pulling the strings.
Henry = Patient Zero. First human to come in contact with Dimension X. Now the Shadow Monster is doing the same thing with Will, Holly, and the others. Young, impressionable kids = easy hive-mind fodder.
Vecna says the kids are βvessels,β but I think he means theyβre vessels for powers, not mind control. And hereβs the cool part: I think each kid is in a different location outside Hawkins, spaced like a clock (12 of themβ¦ 12-hour clock vibes β°), which kind of matches Willβs creepy Mind Flayer drawing. Symbolism, people. SYMBOLISM.
All their powers funnel back into the center β probably the main power source in the Upside Down β which could explain the insane power surge in the trailers (Hawkins Lab, anyone?).
AND HEREβS WHERE THIS CONNECTS TO MY LAST THEORY: Will isnβt just another vessel. Heβs the CENTER. The middle of this whole Mind Flayer creation, the VIP spot on the clock. Vecna clearly wants something from him β the prototype, the kid with powers already β so the Shadow Monster / Vecna setup is basically building a supercharged βWill coreβ at the center.
so imagine: twelve kids, spaced around the outskirts, powers being siphoned, and Will chilling in the middle like the cursed cherry on top ππ.
basically: the Shadow Monster + Vecna = evil interior designers, and Will = centerpiece of their hellish sculpture.
and yes. I might be crazy. but alsoβ¦ I might be right. π¬

(s/o to @silkholland for this)
π€ CHAPTERS SUMMARY: Being off-grid has its perks. At least, with this found family it does. Dmitri officially makes βboys to menβ a reality amongst the youngest members of the party, when taking them out hunting a feast. Dr. Owensβ has been running off-the-books therapy sessions with Max, following he nine months all alone in an alternate dimension. Murray is pulling rank, helping look after yours and Steveβs nuggets (as a good uncle should). Hopper is co-leading the pack, along with your man and El. Argyle is strangely in a happier place than heβs ever been, given the whole βbeing in natureβ thing (end of the world be damned). Joyce and Dustin are discovering they both share a green thumb. Eddie and Robin hold down the fort in more ways than they know. Nancy and Jonathan are getting less weird around each other. And everyoneβs finally been given a solid chance to just exist.
Cue: a few setbacks. Like your pretty boyfriend down with a nasty head cold turned baby flu, a nationwide outbreak tuned globalβ¦ and a fucked up heart in your chest that just doesnβt know how to give you a break, but also refuses to quit.
Telekinesis might be able to help with that.
π€ AUTHORβS NOTE: Weβre in the thick of my S5 hot take with this story. Steve & Babe Bauman are eternally my Roman Empire. Their story is my longest one, and even when we reach their βhappy ever afterβ¦β it still keeps going.
Enjoy the mayhem. It only gets crazier from here.

Chapter Sixty-Five
Go Ahead, Get the Venison
Mid-March β’ 1987
DAY 5 (Classified Coordinates)
The party was hunting.
Like, actually hunting.
As in, locked-and-loaded, full woodland crawl, deer blending into snowdrift, keep-your-voice-low-or-you-wonβt-eat-tonight hunting.
The sun hung low like a bruised yolk above the treeline, casting long spindled shadows over the boysβ heads as they crouched behind a thick copse. Ice glazed the edge of their boots. Damp snow clung to their gloves. None of that mattered.
At least, not to the four little fuckheads peering over the ledge.
βThatβs a four-pointer,β Dustin licked his lips like it would help him aim. βMinimum.β
βItβs just eating grass,β Will whispered.
βWhich means itβs distracted.β
Mike blinked at Dustin. βDo youβ¦ want to kill it?β
βNo!β Dustin hissed, scandalized. βI just want to not starve.β
Lucas snorted, adjusting the hand-me-down hunting rifle against his shoulder. βThis is officially the weirdest rite of passage ever.β
βWelcome to boyhood,β Murray deadpanned from a few feet away. He stood fully upright, utterly unconcerned about noise. βNow shut up before you scare it off.β
Dmitri was crouched like a jungle cat, still as death, eyes fixed ahead on their prey. And Hopper, who had a toothpick tucked in his mouth and a shotgun slung over his shoulder like it was casual fashion, merely grunted.Β
βThat thing spooks, itβs game over,β he mumbled.
But none of them had to worry for long.
Because that was when Murray Bauman, an actual conspiracy goblin, rose with his crossbow (yes, his crossbow)β¦ and let the bolt fly with a single, casual movement.
The deer dropped like a stone.
Will flinched.
Lucas gasped.
Dustin? βJesus Christ, dude!β
Mike blinked at the sight in a stunned haze, then whispered, βYou did that like it wasβlike it was nothingβ¦!β
Murray just turned around with a shrug and lowered the bow to his side. βI did not live through the β60s just to die undercooked on a powder keg of canned beans.β
Dmitri stared at him for a long, quiet second. βYou did not even breathe.β
βNope.β
Hopper, without even looking, raised a gloved fist, while Murray bumped it once, casually smug.
And with that? Operation: Meat was secured.
Of course, thatβs also when Lucas yelped now and turned as his own gun fired, accidentally but miraculously, into a second deer that had begun to flee from the noise.Β
The shot echoed so loud it made all five of them jump. When the deer crumpled in the distance, everyone turned slowlyβ¦
Will blinked. βDid you mean to do that?β
Lucas looked at the gun like it had just told a joke on his behalf. βI donβt even know, man.β
Dustin screamed.Β
βLetβs GO!β He flung both his arms in the air before high-fiving Lucas hard enough to knock both their gloves off.
You sat cross-legged beside Robin and Eddie, all three of you bundled up in big coats like children at recess. Your metal mug steamed in your hands. Eddieβs had long since gone cold, but he still drank it like it was holy.Β
Robin, of course, had soberly spiked hers with a tiny pinch of powdered cocoa from some emergency tin sheβd stashed god knows when.
βAre we sure this is even real coffee?β she asked, sniffing it suspiciously.
Eddie didnβt blink. βIf it makes you vibrate, itβs real.β
βThen Iβm probably dying.β
βRIP,β you offered solemnly.
A staticky voice warbled through the radio.
ββNortheastern sectors under emergency lockdown. Last contact from Montreal suggests border sweep scheduled for April firstββ
The three of you went quiet.
Nancy had been standing behind you, arms folded as she listened. βTheyβll never find us.β
βNah,β Robin muttered. βNot unless they go thirty-five miles off the closest plowed road, then ten more on foot, into a dead zone thatβs not even on official maps.β
βCanadaβs martial law isnβt looking in the Arctic woods,β Eddie added. βTheyβre looking for border jumpers and public threats, not frostbitten camp ghosts.β
You sipped your drink. βSo weβre basically all ghosts now.β
βSexy ones,β Eddie said.
Nancy hummed. βJust like Owens said. Ghosts with groceries.β
βMmm,β you swallowed your coffee enthusiastically, looking at her as you both snapped your fingers.Β
βGhosteries!β the two of you chirped.
Robin gasped, remembering. βGhosteries.β
βAyyyyyeeeee,β Eddie jeered with arms out wide as you all let the stupidity fall over you in a wave of rare bliss.
Not long after that, Jonathan and Argyle both joined you with matching mugs.Β
βThank you for coming today,β Eddie greeted, mock-solemn, as if this was a preachy church service or some sort of seminar.
βConfessionalβs thataway," you pointed to nowhere.
βAinβt no saving my ass,β Jonathan flopped beside Nancy as he said it, his eyes ringed dark but calm.Β
Argyle stretched on the other side of her, his spine cracking. βDid we miss hunting season?β
βDonβt worry,β Robin said. βYouβre just in time for venison stew and identity crises.β
Jonathan chuckled quietly. βPerfect.β
Nancy peaked at him through her lashes, a little stiff, but also not moving away. Sitting between him and Argyle actually felt nice. And it was.
It was peaceful. Grim radio reports clashed with the steam in your mug, the faint sound of someone chopping firewood, the low rustle of a tarp. Peace in a warzone.
Eventually, you stood. βGonna check on Max and boo thang,β you said as you stretched. βAnd our saintly family healthcare.β
No one stopped you.Β
No one had to.
Inside the Winnebago, it was quiet.
Max and Owens were seated toward the back, quiet voices trailing low across the space. Maxβs crutches leaned against the corner; Owens held a notebook loosely in his lap. Neither looked up as you entered. Not out of rudeness, but because this was familiar now.Β
Regular.Β
Sacred.
Therapeutic.
She had started doing this with him ever since she finally woke up. They would talk aboutβ¦ whatever she felt like. Most of the time, it seemed pretty light.Β
But you knew better.Β
Dissecting the inner corners of her mind post-coma was not a βlight topic.β But if there was anyone who could find a way? It was Dr. Sam Owens himself.
You moved to the kitchenette without speaking, and sure enough, Steve was already there.
He was shoeless in socks, hoodie loose at the neck, ruffling through the cabinets. He looked tired. A little clammy. And his sharp nose is a little pink.
You narrowed your eyes. βBabe.β
βBaby.β
Oh hell no. βI swear to God, if youβre getting sickββ
βIβm not.β
You gave him a look.
He groaned. βItβs a sniffle. Probably allergies.β
βYou donβt have allergies.β
βI might now.β
βSteveββ
βIβm making you something, okay?β
That made you pause.
He turned, holding a mismatched handful of crackers, dried fruit, and something in a tin. βItβsβ¦ a snack?β
You blinked at him.
He blinked back.
Then your eyes went glossy and soft. ββ¦Youβre sick.β
βIβm fine.β
βYouβre flushed.β
βYouβre bossy.β
You stepped closer anyway. He didnβt move as you pressed the back of your hand to his cheek.
Warm. Too warm.
His eyes fluttered closed. βYouβre not allowed to touch me like that if Iβm dying.β
βYouβre not dying, youβre warm,β you mumbled, lovesick worry creasing your forehead.
βYouβre mean,β he muttered, opening his eyes. βAnd worse, youβre hot when you worry.β
You rolled your eyes. βYou need to lay down.β
βI need you to eat this snack first.β
βBaby, you need to layββ
βPlease just eat it.β
That made you stop.
Because there was urgency to it, like he needed you to stop worrying about him sot act he could worry about you first. And maybe that would've made you bark back once, but now? That wasn't remotely possible. Because you've seen Steve when he's made to worry. Or worse, be made to feel like he didn't do enough to keep you safe.
So you nodded. Took the weird little handful of grub from him and sat to eat it so that he wouldnβt freak out over possible malnutrition and how that wasnβt good for your heart.
Steve immediately turned to root through a plastic storage bin under the counter. You realized with a quiet swell of fondness that he wasnβt just pulling snacksβ¦ he was digging for cold meds.
βYou couldβve just asked Owens, love.β
βI will. After you eat and after theyβre done.β
You sighed. But you smiled, quietly glancing over your shoulder...
Behind you, Maxβs voice was soft as ever. ββ¦It looked like it was underground. Black sky, butβ¦ stars. Too many. Like they didnβt blink.β
Owens responded quietly. βThat matches previous descriptions. Did it feel familiar?β
Max didnβt speak until she was ready.
You and Steve didnβt interrupt. Because they'd been doing this ever since she woke up: having intimate therapy sessions. Normally, you made sure it was just the two of them so that she wouldn't close up or feel watched. Sometimes, she wanted Lucas there with her. Most times, actually. But there were certain things that she needed to work through on her own, and that was already hard enough because she'd been stuck in some alternate dimension for over nine months. There was a lot of ground to cover, and Owens only ever had the utmost patience for it. Insight for it. Reassurance for it. He didn't have all the answers. He had none more than he did any. Still... he was able to help her navigate it.
None of you ever intruded unless she requested it.
But today, Max hadn't minded Steve being around. Not just because she'd caught onto him clearly feeling under the weather, but because when he'd started to hurry up and clear the space she'd suddenly told him, in a small voice: βWaitβSteve. It's okay, you can... stay. If you want...β
He hadn't been sure if that meant please stay, or I don't want you to feel unwanted, or I trust you and just want you to know that. But whatever it had meant, he'd smiled and started making her and Owens' some hot tea and sandwiches while quietly listening in.
Eventually, Max and Owens moved toward the door. She was bundled up now, coat zipped up and scarf twisted around her neck, crutches tucked tight beneath her arms.
βYou good, baby girl?β you asked gently as she passed.
Max offered a ghost of a smile. βAre you?β
βMmhmm,β you said as you finished your snack.
Steve nodded at her. βGrab the knit cap, please. No getting sick for you.β
That earned him a playful eyeroll and instant obedience. βVery well, mother,β she sighed, faux exasperated.
You ruffled her head as she moved past, and she didnβt even swat you for it. Owens gave a small nod before following her out and helping her down the steps with her crutches, winking at the two of you, knowing damn well that you both wanted to help but Max had this, so she needed to be given the chance.
Then it was just you and Steve.
And your full attention finally landed back on him.
He sniffled.
You glared.
Then he grinned like a sinner. βDo not look at me like that.β
βYou need to rest.β
βYou need to make out with me.β
βYouβre sick!β
βIβm irresistible.β
You squinted at him, a smirk betraying your resolve as you let yourself get playful. ββ¦Youβreββ
He suddenly coughed.
Violently.
You stood in one second flat and grabbed a blanket from the couch, wrapping it around his shoulders. βOkay, no. No more flirting. Youβre going to bed.β
βMan, I like when you boss me around.β
βOh now you like it.β
βLive for it.β
βSteveβ¦β
βI do. Itβs hot.β
You herded him toward the bunk like a sheepdog. He went, but not without whining and giving you a run for your money.Β
βYouβre not gonna tuck me in?β
βIβll tuck you under if you donβt lie down.β
He smiled, climbing into the warm bedding. His hair fluffed messily against the pillow. He looked criminally sweet, like a Victorian boy recovering from consumption.
You knelt beside him.
He blinked at you suddenly.
ββ¦Donβt kiss me.β
βOh Iβm gonna kiss you.β
βAngel, you canβt catch this.β
βYou literally just begged me to make out with you. Also? Itβs bound to happen anywayββ
βYou already caught feelings,β he said mock-solemnly.
That smartass.
You kissed him square on the mouth.
He hummed against you, a pleased little noise that dissolved into a sigh against your lips that vibrated your soul.
When you pulled back, he was grinning sleepily. βIβm gonna marry the hell outta you,β his husky voice murmured.
βI keep asking where the ring is.β
βUp the ass of a treasure trove.β
βClassy.β
βMmhm. But honest.β
Another kiss. Softer, this one shorter.
βIβll be back,β you whispered.
βStay.β
βAlas, I canβt.β
He reached weakly for your hand, feigning a look of solemn horror, voice lowering to a dramatic whisper. βDonβt let me die alone.β
You sputtered at his antics. βYouβre not dyingβ!β
ββ¦Donβt let me get ugly.β
βYouβve always been ugly.β
He laughed, breathy and warm, instantly dropping the whiplash melodrama act as you shook your head at him with continued snorts. Then, grudgingly, he let you go.
βIβll be back withββ
You were just opening the door when suddenlyβ¦
βYEEEEEEE-HAW!β
Eddieβs voice rang through the clearing like a war whoop.
You blinked at the scene.
Steve raised his brows from the cot. βOh no,β he mumbled.
You stepped out into the crisp air to see Eddie and Dustin practically dragging a deer carcass between them like two victorious gremlins.
Lucas trailed after, panting, βWe got two!β
Will gave a bashful little shrug. βI mean, Lucas did. Technically.β
βYeah, after Murray went full blown feral archer,β Mike was panting next to him as they stumbled back like warriors.
Murray muttered something about protein rations as he lit a cigarette. Hopper stood with arms crossed, gruff expression unreadable⦠but his proud little smirk said enough.
Joyce had already begun clearing a space near the campfire for prep with the giant smile, with Dmitri sharpening a knife and grinning around a cigar, ready to roast.
All the while, you just stared.
Then turned to go back inside.
Steve grinned like he knew exactly what you were thinking. βYouβre overwhelmed.β
βOur boys just became men,β you mumbled.
βGo help our baby cavemen.β
You smacked a kiss to his head. βYouβre the only caveman I care about right now.β
βDamn right.β
βNot to say I donβt care about them.β
βFβcourse not.βΒ
βGet some sleep.β
βDonβt be gone long.β
You paused in the doorway, smiling softly. βWouldnβt dream of it, Harrington.β
And then you stepped back out into your wilderness.
Into your war.
Into your family.
Where every heartbeat, every kill, every shiver and snort and sarcastic grin meant only one thing: you were all still alive.
DAY 5 (Classified Coordinates) β Evening
The sun hadnβt quite dipped behind the trees yet, but it was thinking about it.
A low gold hovered across the horizon like a breath held. Just enough light to roast deer meat and boil waterβno more than that. Theyβd have to be careful once it slipped behind the pines.
The camp was quieter than it had been all day. Not silent, not idle, just quieter. Itβs that the comfy kind of hush that comes with hungry bellies and ears always listening. The radio crackled low from where it sat on the tarp-covered crate near the edge of the main fire pit, harmonizing with Dmitriβs sharp Russian grunts, guiding the last round of venison roasting with terrifying efficiency.
βNot that fast,β he barked gently at Mike, who was turning a skewer like he was racing for gold. βYou will char the outside and freeze the inside. That is not food. That is revenge.β
Lucas muffled a laugh behind his glove, while Dustin just nodded solemnly, whispering, βRevenge steak,β under his breath.
Will didnβt say anything. He was carefully watching the juices slide off the flank that Dmitri himself had sliced with surgical precision. Every flick of the cruel knife had been a masterclass. They werenβt watching a man cookβ¦ they were watching a man survive with style.
βLook,β Dmitri muttered, kneeling beside them, his voice calm now. βThis? This is how you do it. Hot edgeβ¦ slow turn. Let the fat drip. You want smoke, not fire.β
βAnd you want protein, not food poisoning,β Jim added from where he sat on an overturned crate, cleaning one of the knives and occasionally pointing out tweaks to how the skewers were angled over the pit. βYou burn it? You eat it.β
βPsh, sβnot even a punishment anymore,β Mike muttered.
Hopper grinned around a toothpick. βExactly.β
They werenβt just learning how to cook.
They were learning how to survive.
And they were good at it.
ββ
Meanwhile, Nancy was doing a full perimeter walk.Β
Her rifle was cradled against her chest, her boots silent in the soft-packed snow. She wasnβt paranoid, just practical. Every fifteen minutes, they ran a quiet sweep. Because it didn't matter how far off-grid this place was, nowhere was safe for good.
The radio was all the proof they needed.
ββnorthern border closures now extended through June. Warnings of unauthorized crossers remain active. The government statement issued through the United Nations advises all civilians to maintain regulated shelter until further noticeβ¦β
El floated a few dozen feet above, her silhouette nearly invisible in the clouded tree line. Her arms were still at her sides. Her brows were drawn tight. And her nostrils bled, but only faintly.
βNo drones,β she whispered down to Nancy after a beat.
Together, and without more than a few words exchanged, they completed the full loop. They passed tall tree trunks sprayed in frozen moss, low brush dusted with windblown ice, boot prints from the boys earlier that afternoon.
It wasnβt fear keeping them sharp.
It was habit. It was love.
It was survival.
ββ
βRadioβs extra spooky tonight,β Eddie muttered, barely above a whisper.
You hummed. βYeah. Like some end-of-the-world bedtime story.β
Back at the main camp, you and Eddie were crouched between the two heavily camouflaged tanks, their worn exteriors blanketed with evergreen branches and snow dampened burlap. It was a lot warmer in this little alcove. Shielded from the wind. The perfect spot to set up dinner.
You were working together, mostly silent while laying out paper plates and propping up the battered fold-out crate to serve as a makeshift table, plus folding a few extra blankets nearby for those who needed to sit or shiver in peace.
βHonestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the next broadcast is just a guy screaming into the void.β
You raised your brows. βYouβre saying thatβs not what weβve been listening to all day?β
He snorted, mouth twitching. βOkay, fair.β He paused a moment. βYou think weβll ever get real food again?β
βThis is real food.β
βRight, right,β he nodded. βDeer a la forest. Served with a side of radioactive snowflakes and existential dread.β
You grinned faintly. βShut up and pass me the extra blanket.β
He did. But not without tossing it at your face first.
Just as you tackled him back with a wad of tarp, Robin approached with a bigger crate in her arms and a wool blanket wrapped like a cape around her shoulders.
βDelivery,β she sang. βAnd no, I did not sign up for snow duty.β
βIs that the fancy dining table?β you asked.
βItβs a collapsed folding card table from Owensβs weird old guy collection. So yes.β
Eddie grinned. βMadame Buckley, doing the Lordβs work.β
The three of you worked quickly to set everything up. The thicker blankets were all tucked around the edges of the tanks, lanterns lit low, enough camouflage to keep light bounce minimal from above.
The wind was picking up. Just enough to sting.
But the only chill you all felt running down your spines were caused by the news updates, not the weather.
ββ
Joyce was near the fire now, sorting through what sheβd called βshrubbery with purpose.β
βI think this oneβs sorrel,β she muttered to herself, twirling a green frond between two fingers. βMore crisp. A little bit lemony.β
Argyle leaned over her shoulder with a grin. βAnd that oneβs wood violet. Edible flowers, baby. Told you I was certified.β
βCertified what, exactly?β
βCalifornia Dreaminβ,β he said, deadpan.
But Joyce smiled, trusting him. βMaybe your, ummβ¦β She clicked her tongue, ββ¦your βplantβ knowledge comes in a lot more handy than just, ya know.β She gently shrugged. βBlazing it up.β
He turned to her. βMrs. Byers, was that a compliment?β
She winked. βWeβll go with that.β
Between the two of them (β¦and Dustin popping by to confirm a few findsβ¦) they were managing to build a sparse but impressive salad from wild-grown greens.
βLook at us,β Joyce said proudly. βNext step is a garden.β
βFarm to table, post-apocalyptic edition,β Dustin called from across the camp.
βHey!β Joyce grinned. βIβm serious. If we ever settle? Really settle, Iβm planting. All of it. I mean it. Beans, berries, rootsβ¦β
You passed by in time to hear her, and grinned. βWeβll eat better than kings.β
βHell yeah, we will chica,β Argyle agreed, tossing a clump of leaves into the bowl. βGreens or bust.β
ββ
It was almost time to eat.
The meat was fully roasted, each skewer shining with juice and smoke, and the boys had done damn good work. Dmitri gave them a solemn nod as they all carried the portions carefully toward the makeshift table.
βNot bad for first-timers,β he muttered.
Hopper clapped Will on the shoulder. βMight make mountain men outta you yet.β
Lucas, proud, was telling Maxβs crutches all about the shot he took. βIt just happened, man. I didnβt even aim. I blinked and boom. Venison.β
Steve finally stepped down from the Winnebago just as the boys were laying the food down.
He looked⦠alright. Not great, but okay. Pale in the face, head a little low, and wrapped in three layers and a thick scarf. A massive knit beanie covered up his ever-perfect head of hair, obnoxiously vibrant with cream and maroon colored yarn, all knitted together.
The second you saw it, you wheezed.
βYou good?β he asked, voice thick.
βYouβre wearing the beanie,β you beamed.
βI had to wear the beanie. You told me I couldnβt come out here without bundling up.β
You squinted at him, still smiling.
ββ¦oh, you like the beanie,β you accused him.
He looked away, pouting. βItβs cozy.β
βFYI? I wanted to go with yellow,β you smirked. βBut Argyle insisted on these colors.β
βHe insisted it matched my aura.β
βYou donβt know what that means.β
Steve shrugged. βNeither does he. But he was right.β
You were already laughing again. Soft, silent wheezing, shoulders shaking. Steve was grinning like an idiot now.
Then he sniffled. Hard, clearing his croaky throat.
Instantly, your concern surged again. βSteveβ¦β
βIβm fine,β he mumbled. βJust donβt wanna miss dinner.β
βYou can eat inside.β
βI donβt wanna eat inside.β
You stepped closer. βYou sure?β
He nodded, suddenly quieter. βI justβ¦ wanna be around everyone.β
You looked at him.
Really looked.
This wasnβt about being stubborn.
This was about belonging.
β¦and about togetherness.
That was something he hadnβt had until all of you came along, and it didnβt matter to him that it meant the end of the world, or that he was getting a nasty head cold.Β
You nodded once. βThen sit next to me and stay warm.β
He lifted the corner of his blanket and beckoned you in. βGet in here before I get clingy.β
βYouβre already clingy,β you muttered, but you stepped into the cocoon within a second.
And he pressed his face into your shoulder, sniffling like a man possessed, and murmured against your skin, βDonβt get sick.β
You snorted. βThatβs rich. Richer than your trust fund.β
Steve wheezed a laugh⦠then coughed.
Joyce immediately materialized. βWhat did you take?β
Steve blinked. βUhmβ¦β
βIβve got DayQuil and half the Canadian pharmacy in my duffel. Come with me.β
Owens appeared like a ghost. βIβll monitor his temp.β
βWhy is everyone acting like Iβmββ
βYouβre sick,β you, Joyce and Owens all said at once.
Steve held up his hands. βOkay, okay.β
But you could tell.
He liked it.
Being taken care of.
For once in his life, Steve was being taken care of.
At some point, Nancy and Eleven reappeared through the trees, walking slowly. Between them, Max made her way forward on crutches. Slow. Steady. Focused.
All of you went still.
Every last person froze to watch.
The meat sizzled. The wind rustled. The radio cracked low behind the table.
Max walked with her crutches.
She stumbled once. Caught herself and kept going⦠and choosing not to need help.
Lucas looked like he might faint.
You looked like you were fainting.
Steve crouched down, head cold and all, right in front of her path. βWell well well,β he said dramatically. βLook who thinks sheβs strong enough to eat my rations.β
Max barked a laugh and pushed forward, eyes gleaming.
You slid down beside Steve on the ground, sitting with him in the snow without hesitation, on top of crates with bundles of blankets. He pulled you into his lap, his chin pressed against your scarf, breath warm on your neck.
You nuzzled your temple against his knit cap. βTheeere sheeeee goesssssβ¦β you sang. βThere she goessssss againnn.β
Steve joined in with you. βRacing through myyy brainβ¦β
Lucas, Mike and Dustin chimed in to make a choir. βAnd I just canβt contaayyy-eeee-ainnnnβ¦β
Now everyone at the camp was singing as Max sputtered and laughed, Nancy and Eleven flanking her sidesβ¦ also singing joyfully, even dancing, as the groupβs chosen final girl kept finding her footing.Β
Right as Dustin did the signature drum section with wild flourish, Max nearly collapsed into Lucasβs arms at the last second, and he scooped her close with a wheezy little sound of love.
Cheers erupted.
Eddie whooped. Robin screamed. Hopper clapped. Dustin smirked while Murray flicked a cigarette, also smirking.
And then?
You ate.
All of you. Together. Cramped like sardines in between trees, camouflaged under tanks, sharing meat and wild greens and powdered cocoa, passing salt packets like currency.
βSomeone better tell me thereβs at least pepper in that stash,β Murray grouched as he plopped down into his seat, his eyes on the pouch of packets.
You leaned over to toss him one. βThere. For your rotted tastebuds.β
He pointed at you. βThatβs three.β
βNah, Iβm not there yet.β
βStrike. Three.β
Eddie snorted.
You just shrugged and dug into your venison. βI mean, someoneβs gotta keep you humble in the jungle.β
βBy insulting my smoking habits? Knowing damn well Iβve got better tastebuds than your unscathed little tongue?β
Steve hummed absentmindedly as he ate. βWouldnβt say that,β he mumbled quietly, but youβd caught it.
So did Robin. Who now squeaked.
You swatted at him, biting back a huge grin and blushing like a madwoman. βStefan Michael Harrington,β you mock scolded.
Mike reeled. βMichaelβ?!β
βOh god,β Steve groaned, mouthful of meat as he sniffled and laughed and coughed and pouted.
βWe share a name??β
Steve sighed exasperatedly, guzzling water to keep his choking down as you patted his back. βSure do, Baby Wheeler.β
Mikeβs mouth was agape, all while Dustin cackled like an asshole next to Will.
βNever living this down,β he wheezed.
βHow did we just find this out??β Will asked brightly.
Everyone paused. But no one panicked. Because right now? All of you were here.
Together, warm, alive and sharing dinner.
Right now, all there was time for was to eat.
Campfire out.
Camp lights on.
Every single heartbeat counted.
Every single bite was earned.
Every one of you in this moment.
Chapter Sixty-Six
Go Ahead, Fight God.
March β’ 1987
DAY 6 (Classified Coordinates) β Morning
Steve Harrington looked like hell. And not the charming, tousled, βheβs got a little coldβ kind of hell.
This was full-blown, sniffling, coughing, curled up on the cot like a dramatic widow hell.
Owens was seated beside him, checking his pulse with two fingers and a faint wince, while Joyce Byers was now digging through her duffel bag with the intensity of a war nurse in the trenches.
And you?
You were hovering like Steveβs certified angel of mercy, wrapped in three layers of flannel and concern.
βYou are so annoying when you hover,β Steve groaned, muffled by his scarf. His sharp nose was red. His brown eyes were bloodshot. He had a knit beanie tugged over his ears like a sick child on a snow day.
βYouβre annoying when you breathe through your mouth like that,β you shot back calmly.
βIβm congested!β he barked, then coughed violently. βIβm literally dying, and sheβs insulting me.β
βYouβre not dying,β Owens muttered, checking Steveβs vitals again. βThough you are thoroughly unpleasant.β
βThank you,β you and Joyce said at the same time.
Steve flopped dramatically onto his side, moaning. βYou people donβt understand. Iβm out here dying sexy and misunderstood.β
Joyce laughed, full and bright as she handed over a bottle. βTake the NyQuil, James Dean.β
βI told you he thinks heβs a martyr,β you murmured fondly.
Steve peeked up at you with a scowl, then he softened immediately when you offered him the tissue box with a weirdly loving smile.
βI canβt stand you,β he mumbled.
βCanβt stand you either,β you replied. βBlow your nose, Romeo.β
As he did, with the most godawful honking noise known to mankind⦠Owens tapped the stethoscope around his neck and gave you both a serious look.
βHeβs just run down. Feverβs low-grade. Oxygenβs fine. Probably a bad flu, maybe borderline bronchitis, but the good news? Nothing we canβt manage out here.β
You sighed with relief. βGood.β
Steve made a tiny fist-pump from the cot. βKnew it. Killer immune system. Harrington strong.β
βHowever,β Owens added, pointing at you, βyou canβt afford to get sick.β
Steve was already sitting up. βExactly. She shouldnβt even be in hereββ
βYouβre not contagious yet,β you tried to argue.
βHe absolutely is,β Owens and Joyce snapped in unison.
You just folded your arms. βSamβ¦ how bad would it be? If I caught it?β
Owens sighed. βIt wonβt directly cause an arrhythmia episode. Butββ
βBut itβll make her body work harder,β Joyce cut in. βAnd she doesnβt need anything making her hardworking heart work any harder.β
Steve groaned, flopping back with a forearm over his eyes. βCool. Great. Iβm a plague rat. This is my legacy.β
You hated this. You really really hated this. And you didnβt even try to hide the sad look on your face as you stared at your boy.
Joyce handed him a different bottle of meds. βTake the acetaminophen. Drink more water. Stop talking.β
You were already rising from your crouch beside him, but he reached for your wrist.
βDonβt go.β
The look in his eyes made your chest tighten.
βI just wannaβ¦ I dunno.β He shrugged. βHave you nearby. Not too nearby. Justβ¦ near.β
You gave him a long look, then cupped his cheek for just a second, warm and deliberate. βIβm not going far, baby.β
βYouβre already far,β he mumbled miserably.
βDawwwwhhh, Stevieee.β
He closed his eyes. βDonβt call me Stevie. It makes me feel like Iβm in a nursery rhyme.β
βIt makes you feel adored,β you murmured, standing. βWhich you are.β
As you stepped back, you shot him a playful look, even as he scowled like a model riddled with the plague. βBut I agree. Itβs giving nursery rhymes. Sβwhy I never call you that.β
βGlad weβre on the same page.β
βIβll stick with βbabyβ and βmy love.β Maybe even lover.β
Steve sighed through his stuffy nose, his bleary eyes heavy but fixed on you. βI like those...β
You scrunched your nose at him as Owens walked over with a thermometer and Joyce was fluffing his pillow with motherly vigor.
βUgh,β Steve groaned. βIβm useless.β
βIncorrect,β Owens said. βYou are adorably useless.β
βIβd like to file a formal protest,β Steve deadpanned.
βOh, heβs definitely in love with you,β Joyce said as you stepped away.
Steve groaned louder.
Thatβs when the door to the Winnebago creaked open. Murray entered, scarf wrapped high on his neck, face chapped from wind.
βOh good,β he muttered. βThe babyβs still alive.β
βI am not a baby,β Steve growled from the cot, congested and betrayed.
βRight. Youβre a sick baby.β Murray peered down at him. βCongratulations. Your hair still looks fine.β
You snorted.
Steve narrowed his eyes. βYou come here to mock me orβ¦?β
βActually,β Murray said, rolling up his sleeves, βIβm here to offer myself as a temporary sick ward monitor. You know. Take some of the babysitting load off.β
Steve blinked twice. βYouβd do that?β
Murray gave a loud, sarcastic sigh. βOnly because if you die, sheβll cry. And then Iβll cry. And then the world ends.β
...well, he wasn't wrong.
You'd worry yourself silly if your man didn't rest.
Even Joyce hummed in agreement. βPretty sure it already did.β
You just smiled faintly, touched and exasperated. βYouβre all such disasters.β
Steve choked on his own spit. Owens raised his brows. Joyce turned her head so fast her earring flew off.
You blinked. βIββ
Steve blinked. βWeββ
Murray just raised a brow. βYou what?β
Joyce clapped a hand over her mouth, eyes shining with effort not to react. Owens smiled into his clipboard.
ββ¦eventually,β Steve mumbled, trying not to grin and failing beautifully.
You looked down, flustered as hell and smiling like an idiot. βEventually,β you warmly agreed, biting your lip like a lovesick loser.
βGood,β Murray said, clapping Steve on the foot. βI expect to officiate.β
βIβll kill you,β Steve muttered, but he was glowing.
Minutes later, you were bundling up. Joyce handed you a thermos, Owens passed you a pulse-checking monitor for your wrist, and Steve scowled from under three blankets.
βYou sure you gotta go?β he murmured groggily.
You bent to kiss his temple gently. βIβll be back in an hour. Maxβll keep you company.β
That was when the door opened again and Eddie walked in, panting and carrying Max in both arms like a princess bride.
βSheβs getting heavy,β he huffed with flourish.
Max snickered wildly. βTell me again how fast you are.β
βFaster than Dustin,β Eddie panted. βBut not faster than trauma.β
He deposited her on the opposite cot with a flourish. She stuck her tongue out at Steve. βSick buddy time!β
Steve sniffed and pointed at her solemnly. βYou better not steal my tissues.β
βToo late,β Max chirped, plucking one and lapping it up in the air like an airplane.
βMy babies,β you cooed at them, now pinching Maxβs chilly cheek as you handed her some fresh hot cocoa. βTake care of him, yeah?β
βAnything for you, Dad.β
She was totally serious.
And you were totally a goner.
Even Steve couldnβt help but playfully roll his eyes, still sniffling miserably and grumbling with a pouty smile.
βColoring or cards?β Max asked him.
βIf we color without Will, heβll cry,β Steve muttered.
She nodded sagely, reaching for a deck. βGo Fish it is.β
You were already at the door, ready to roll. βAlright. Letβs sweep.β
Murray joined you, pulling on his coat. βTry not to die. Iβm emotionally unavailable before noon.β
As you walked past him, he suddenly planted two kissed fingers on your forehead with a tiny shove. βThatβs from Harrington.β
Steve coughed behind you. βTell her sheβs welcome!β
βI will cherish it all my life,β you waved, making it down the steps. Then you giggled without turning back. βYouβre still a dick, Murr.β
Murray just grinned.
βWere you serious?β
He looked at you with one arched brow. βAboutβ¦?β
βMarrying him,β you murmured sheepishly. Warmly. βYou uhmβ¦ approve?β
He stared at you like that was the stupidest question in the world but also like you had just put him in a stupidly inconvenient position to go soft on you.
βOnce upon a time,β he started.
βDoooonβtβ¦β
βThere was a man who started a trend called, βwe like Steve, but we donβt love Steveβ¦β A dashing man, mind you.β
βSpare me, pleaseββ
βAnd a girlβ¦β he kept going, undeterred as he threw an arm over your shoulders, his eyes on the trees like some wise old witchdoctor giving a monologue, ββ¦who defied all odds.β
The smile on your face nearly broke it, and you leaned in closer to him as you walked. βOkay, I like this story. Keep going.β
βYou two make sure to report back in one piece,β came Hopperβs voice, over by the firepit. He was now making it disappear completely, as if it had never existed.
You gave him a two-finger salute. βWill do, coach.β
But then he started grinning as he watched you both walk away, towards the trees where Dmitri and the kids were all waiting for you both with Robin while Eddie jogged to catch up.
βThe most unorthodox niece and uncle Iβve ever seen in my life,β Jonathan muttered beside him, smirking as he dusted off his hands.
Hopper was still smiling to himself. βYeah,β he murmured. βJust goes to show that sometimesβ¦ familyβs not always the obvious kind.β
That actually made Jonathan sigh deeply. He watched you and Murray laugh, seeing the way that he was truly different with you than he usually was with others. Still cynical. Still a smartass. But uncharacteristically tender, in the most unusual of ways.
Like a man whoβs never wanted to be a father, but had stepped onto the plate on behalf of a sibling who never wanted to be one either but was careless about it. And too wickedly selfish to even feel guilt or remorse.
But that didnβt matter anymore. Because now, twenty-one years later, you had an uncle who loved you better and a mafia wife grandma, who both of you prayed to God was still safe over in Vegas with her casino boyfriends.
Murray chose to believe that.
You chose to believe that.
βNot gonna lie,β Nancy sighed lackadaisically. She sat down next to Argyle as he finished pushing leaves over the pile of burnt ash. βIβm a little jealous.
Jonathan arched an eyebrow. βOfβ¦?β
She nodded up at you. βThat. Having family that knows whatβs going on, and gets it.β
That actually took him by surprise.
Nancy hadnβt said it with disdain. She hadnβt said it with actual jealousy. Not the kind that is green and ugly. Sheβd set it honestly. And Jonathan understood it, because her parents truly didnβt have a clue.
Ted and Karen Wheeler were off with family somewhere, no doubt worried sick about their oldest and their middle child. Thankfully, they had Holly. But that wasnβt enough to make their fears go away.
And Nancy had to live with that guilt every single hour of every single passing day.
βAnd before any of you take offense,β she added now, a bit teasingly. βNo, Iβm not saying you guys arenβt my real family. Iβm just sayingβ¦β
βIt feels nice knowing you donβt have family left in the dark?β Jonathan finished for her.
Left behind.
Left to survive with you.
Nancy looked at him now, her blue eyes locking onto his charcoal embers that could see right through her. Finally, she nodded.
βYeah,β she whispered. βYeah, that.β
He nodded back.
Hopper sighed. βTheyβre starting to figure it out,β he said softly, a bit gruff. βThey did the right thing. Getting out.β
Nancy but her lip, choosing to believe that as she gave a quick nod, staring at the ground.Β
βSo did you,β Hopper added, looking right at her.
She peeked up at him through her lashes. Almost timidly. βI know,β she breathed. βThink maybe thatβs why I feelβ¦ worse. Because I wouldnβt change the fact we stayed.β
Jonathanβs heart clenched. He truly had it lucky. Really fucking lucky. Joyce had known everything from the start, before any of them had figured it out. And yeah, Will had been made to suffer the worst of it, but he was still here. Lonnie had been out of the picture for a long time so as far as Jonathan was concerned? He had his family. His whole blood family, and his found family.
Nancy didnβt.
And suddenly? It felt like he was seeing that for the very first time. Not because he had never known it before. He had. But now, he was finally taking the time to recognize it fully.
Argyle patted her leg. βFor what itβs worth, chica?β
She looked at him as he winked. βI think youβre exactly where you were supposed to be.β
βYeah, and Hollyβs now got a true shot at childhood,β Jonathan added, now moving to sit near her.
Nancy actually smiled at that, sadly but truly. βSheβs got a farm. Our family out in Utah owns land, soβ¦ sheβs alright. At leastβwellβ¦β
βShe is.β
Jonathan didnβt let her continue. He cut her off, but not to shut her down or interrupt. Rather, to silence the doubts now creeping in to plague her thoughts.
It worked.
βYeah,β she nodded, now busying herself with masking the ashes alongside Argyle. βYeah, she is.β
βAll of them are,β Hopper added firmly.
The three younger adults looked at him now, all of them nodding. Because Hopper was right. He had to be right.
If he wasnβt, then this was all for nothing.
ββ
The woods were hushed. Dry, cold, still.
You walked in a staggered V formation. Dimitri led point, Murray at your side. Robin and Eddie flanked the rear, both tuned into the frequency chatter.
The kids stayed close. Mike, Lucas, Will and Dustin were acutely aware of the surroundings, eyes and ears peeled as Eleven hovered a few feet above with her eyes darting between clouds and treetops.
You all kept your voices low, your steps quiet.
βSo,β Dustin whispered, βhow many feet above us does El have to float before any drones canβt detect her heat signature?β
βI donβt know,β you replied. βAsk the United Nations.β
βMike already did,β Will added. βHe wrote a letter.β
βShut up,β Mike hissed.
βYou did, though.β
βIn his diary,β Lucas added smugly.
Eleven floated down and landed gently. βNo drones yet.β
Murray sighed. βThen either theyβre waitingβ¦ or theyβve recalibrated. Which means weβll have company soon.β
βCanadaβs buckling down hard,β Robin called out softly. βThey just said theyβre pushing new satellite nets through the Alberta corridor.β
Dimitri swore under his breath.
βWould that affect us?β Will asked, alarmed.
βDepends,β Murray answered. βWeβre off the map. But heatβs heat. And the ground doesnβt lie.β
You nodded slowly. βSoβ¦ make it look like no oneβs ever stepped here. Which weβre already doing.β
Lucas exhaled hard. βHow are we supposed to do that all the time, though?β
You looked back at him. βWeβll figure it out.β
He watched you smile sadly at him, but he knew you still believed your own words. Hell, youβd all made it this far, right? How could you not?
Dmitri pointed. βWe should check the waters.β
Murray nodded. βGood call.β
βMaybe you can tree hop?β Dustin suggested to El. βLike, not actually hop, but some coverage might do you good as you look above it.β
El agreed. βI like the sound of thatββ
But she didn't have a chance to elaborate on that.
No one did.
Because your legs buckled.
It wasnβt sudden. Not exactly. It was a slow, disorienting crumple, like gravity turning to static under your knees, while everyone was still talking and not seeing the way that youβd been starting to silently sufferβ¦
You staggered, eyes wild, your breath catching in your throat as you reached out, clutching blindly for Murrayβs arm.
He turned just in time. βHeyβhey, kidββ
But your pupils were blown. Your lips parted like you were about to say something, maybe you were, but the words didnβt come.
Fuck, the words werenβt fucking coming.
And fuck, you werenβt breathing right.
Your chest was seizing with shallow, labored breaths, and you clung to your uncle for help, for relief, for comfort, for anything.
And then you dropped.
You fully collapsed, hitting your knees, leaves crunching under you as your arms trembled, hands clawing at your own ribs. And you couldnβt feel anything except pressure. Noise. Static. Shit, you couldnβt even see. Your vision was graying out.
And it felt like your heart was screaming.
βSheβs going down!β Murray shouted, voice jagged with something that didnβt sound like him at all.Β
All the kids froze. Every single one of them.Β
Dustinβs eyes went huge, big as saucers next to Will, who gasped. Lucasβs mouth dropped open. Mike turned pale.
He was already diving towards you, catching both of your shoulders before you could crumple any further, guiding you flat onto your back.Β
βPulse is erraticββ His voice was tight, surgical. βChrist, Christββ
βArrhythmia,β Murray snapped. βItβs the arrhythmiaβsheβs having a goddamn heart attack.β
Robin dropped to her knees beside you, green eyes wild. ββwhaβheart attack?!ββ
βFuckinβ A, man,β Eddie gritted, voice angrily cracking as his knees hit the ground beside hers.
Your body jolted again.Β
A twitch.Β
A spasm.
βHβ¦helβ¦β
βNo no no no noββ Dustin whispered. His voice was high, scared as hell, and his backpack slid off as he stumbled forward. βNo, come onβcome on, dudeββ
Mikeβs hands were shaking. βWhat do we doβwhat do we doβwhat do we doβ?!β
βShit,β Lucas hissed in a panick.
βBack up,β Dimitri barked. βGive us roomβMurrayβget her airwayββ
βI know what the hell Iβm doing!β Murray snapped, but his voice cracked right in the middle of it.
Eleven moved swiftly.
She didnβt think twice. Didnβt ask permission.
She bolted forward, hovering no longer, landing so hard that all the brittle leaves beneath her kicked up in a burst. Her boots slid in the powder. She nearly fell.
And then she was on her knees beside you.
βElβdonβtββ Mike warned, voice strained and small, but she was already reaching.
But she did.
Both her hands were shaking violently. But her eyes were locked straight on your chest.
She slammed her palm down over your sternum.
The sound was violent. The creak in all your tender ribs echoed outward, and you gasped like youβd just been slammed underwater.
Elevenβs nose bled instantly. Her entire body shook from the force of the contact. Her mouth opened in pain, but she didnβt stop. Her fingers spread wide, palm splaying like she was holding your heart in place.
You clutched at her wrist, whimpering in pain that almost sounded like relief. Like trust, like prayer and apology.
Robin choked on a sob as Eddie staggered back, eyes huge and unblinking.
βJesus fucking Christββ he muttered, both hands in his hair. βIs thisβwhat the hell is sheββ
Will had one hand clutched over his mouth. Dustin looked like he was going to be sick.
Lucas was frozen, rooted to the spot as he instinctively clutched Mikeβs lanky forearm.
βEl, whaβ¦ wh-wh-whaβ¦β Mike breathily stuttered, tears brimming as he watched you suffer as she worked.
Now Elevenβs face was twisted into something raw and ancient. A sound came from her throat. Not a scream, not a cry, just pressure and grit and power.
β¦and then your uneven heart shuddered.
Everyone went still.
And then it almost stopped.
In this split second, no one breathed in case you werenβt. The silence was so loud it ached. And it wasnβt even five seconds total before they realized that your erratic rhythm hadnβt fully stopped, but simply stalledβ¦
β¦then started up again at its usual irregular pace.
Sluggish. Rattled. A dead engine catching. It was now a gradual, jagged, thudding restart, like jumper cables on frozen steel.
A new rhythm.
A different beat.
Still wrong, still irregular, but it was⦠new.
Your chest rose. Then fell. Then rose again.
And eventually you coughed hard, the sound scraping from deep inside you. Your body jerked from the force of it, and now Eddie suddenly felt like he was right back on the ground at the electric fence, forcing air back into your lungs with Jonathan and Steve.
βChrist, man,β he wheezed, palm to his forehead at the sound of your coughing.
Dimitri caught you fully as you sagged into his arms.
Robin burst into tears, her hands over her face as she held onto Will and Dustin.
Murray had his hand behind your head, cradling it gently. βCome on, honey. Come on. Thatβs itβkeep goingβkeep going.β
Eleven collapsed forward, her whole body going limp. Mike was there instantly, catching her before she hit the leaves on her side from the exertion.
βSheβ¦β Mikeβs voice broke.Β
Lucas stared. βShe just did thatββ
βShe just fucking did that,β Eddie whispered, eyes blown wide and glassy with trauma and recovering fears.
βShe did what she had to do,β Murray half growled, still holding your face. βAnd it worked.β
You were breathing. Barely. But breathing.
You werenβt fully there. But you were still there.
And your gaze never left your uncleβs, throat bobbing as you kept him as the focal point. Words still hadnβt found you yet. They couldnβt.
βBack to camp,β Dimitri said, sharp and decisive. βNow. Owens needs her now.β
βDone,β Murray barked. βCome onβget her up.β
Dimitri didnβt wait for further orders. He swept you into his arms like it was nothing, like your body hadnβt just tried to give out on all of them. One arm slipped under your back, one under your knees as he held you close and turned to head back toward camp.
Your head lolled lightly against his chest, and Murray was right at his side, breath choppy, but his hand stayed firmly planted on your shoulder.
Behind you, Robin still had her arms around Will, holding him close as he sniffled hard into her coat.Β
βSβalright,β she wept unabashedly. βSheβs alright, sheβs all good. Sheβs fine, sheβll be fine.β
Eddie had Lucas and Dustin, who now clung to the hem of his older friendβs jacket, wiping his face with his sleeve as he walked silently.
Even Eleven, pale and trembling in Mikeβs arms, wouldnβt take her eyes off you as she pulled at him urgently.
βPlease,β she breathed. βPlease, getβ¦me thereββ
βGot you,β he barely muttered before letting her hop up to ride piggyback and catch up to Dmitri and Murray so that she could stay close.
No one else spoke.
The woods had never felt quieter.
They suddenly felt lethal.
You still didnβt say a word. Couldnβt. Everything was still too heavy. But as the wind rustled the trees above youβ¦
β¦you could feel every new uneven beat.
Every single one of them.
It was like a new war drum that taunted you with the cold blooded truth: you werenβt gonna outrun thisβ¦ And soon enough? If you didnβt get ahead of it, it was gonna outrun you instead.
Chapter Sixty-Seven
Resetting the Breaker
DAY 6 (Classified Coordinates) β Afternoon
βBro, we made this place look so clean itβs like God Himself hit Control-Z.β
Argyleβs voice cut through the haze of pine needles and humidity, as he leaned back against a tree stump with a smug grin. Nancy, still crouched beside a camouflaged mound of moss and canvas, looked up from where sheβd just triple-checked a snare trap.Β
Her lips curled. βGod and three very paranoid lunatics,β she quipped, standing and dusting her hands off. βBut sure. Letβs give Him the credit.β
Jonathan barked a quiet laugh as he adjusted the wire mesh around a nearby root. βWhatever works.β
Behind them, Hopper stood with his strong arms crossed, surveying the now-invisible remains of their previous fire site. It was as if the ground had never been disturbed, the logs reburied, the ash scrubbed away and fully dispersed. Even the glints of aluminum from food scraps were gone, buried or carried off by the kids earlier.Β
The Winnebago was still nestled in its off-road pocket, covered in netting and pine branches. From the sky? It looked like a boulder or the earth itself.
They were proud. They were smug. And for a brief second, they were just⦠breathing.
βGod, this feels good,β Jonathan murmured, and Nancy, standing beside him, didnβt flinch. She just nodded.
No, they werenβt talking about themselves. They werenβt not talking about themselves either. But the joking, quiet, morbid and dry, was a kind of lifeline. Hopper squinted at the tiny radio clipped to the belt of his jeans. A crackle of static, then another update rolled in:
ββ¦the entire province of British Columbia has initiated a complete state of emergencyβ¦ all major border crossings now under heavy supervisionβ¦Β
The Canadian Armed Forces have assumed temporary jurisdiction under emergency authority. Citizens are urged to remain in their homesβ¦β
βNot US martial law,β Nancy muttered.
βBut basically US martial law,β Jonathan said.
Argyle shrugged. βThey can call it whatever they want, it still smells like dictatorship leftovers.β
And then the trees shifted.
Not loud. Just enough movement, quick, steady, urgentβ¦ Hopperβs head snapped toward the source. Nancyβs body tensed. Jonathan rose from his crouch, heart hammering.
βOh, fuck,β Nancy breathed, already breaking into a run.
Dimitri was charging toward them with Murray fast on his heels. Cradled in Dimitriβs arms was your limp form, head lolled slightly, your long legs swinging lifelessly with every jarring stride. Everyone froze for half a second. Then the whole world kicked into overdrive.
Nancy and Jonathan reached you all first, barely letting Dimitri slow down before their hands were outstretched. Hopper was right behind them, barking for Owens. Argyle was already spinning on his heel.
βYo, I got Owens,β he shouted, voice tight but steady. βHarringtonβs still sleepingββ
βDonβt wake him,β Dmitri urged quickly.
Inside the Winnebago, the air was cool, stale with the recycled scent of disinfectant and blankets and NyQuil. Steve was breathing softly, a faint rasp in his chest. Max was curled up on the couch across from him, her brows knitted in her newly undisturbed sleep.
Owens looked up from a metal case of meds and flinched as Argyle threw open the door.
βHey, doc. Care for some air?β
No wasted words. Argyle didnβt shout. He didnβt panic, he didnβt give details. But the message was clear:
This is an emergency.
Owens was on his feet instantly.
Outside, Joyce had already reached Dimitri and was now quietly snapping directions, laying down a towel on the cleared-out bench beside the campβs water barrels.
βWe need her horizontal. Get her flat. Someone elevate her legs. Whereβs her damn pulse?β
You werenβt unconscious. Not entirely. But your lips were pale. Your breath was shallow, and the flutter inside your chest felt like loose wires sparking behind your ribs.
Dimitri laid you down gently, his jaw clenched, eyes scanning your face like it might suddenly disappear.
βI didnβt know how long we had,β he said to no one and everyone. βI just ran.β
βGood,β Owens barked, emerging from the Winnebago with Argyle close behind. βLay her flat. I want pressure on her legs and someone get Steve the hell in the loop.β
Mike reeled. βIn itβ¦?!β
βHeβs worse off not knowing,β Owens rushed to explain.
βNot wrong,β Robin flusteredly agreed, her face still red and blotchy with stress and concern. βSteve really doesnβt need to find this out laterββ
βHe needs to rest,β Joyce insisted, still frazzled.
βAnd he won't do that if he finds out heβs been left out of the loop,β Hopper disagreed, just as frazzled.
βOut of the loop from what?β
Everyone whipped around to face the voice that had just cracked behind them, groggy, on edge, slurred from sleep and doped on the flu medication.
Steve stood in the doorway of the Winnebago, a blanket slung off his shoulders, eyes swollen and bloodshot. His hair was a disaster. His voice was hoarse.
But the second he saw you, he bolted.
βOh my God. Oh my Godββ
He fell to his knees beside you, coughing hard into his shoulder but reaching out all the same. His hands found your face before anyone could stop him. All of his fingers curled around your jaw, his thumb brushing your cheekbone.Β
Eleven was just behind Steve, breathless, still recovering from the output of what sheβd done. Mike held her by the waist. Her face was flushed.
βItβs a new rhythm,β she whispered. βItβs unsteady. It didnβt stopβit stalled. Then it came backβ¦ different.β
Steveβs face contorted. βWhat does that even mean?β
You opened your eyes. Barely. You looked at him and your lips twitched.
βMeansβ¦ Iβm still here.β
He choked on a laugh and a sob in the same breath, wiping snot off his face with his sleeve. βYeah, no shit youβre still here. You better be still here. Swear to Godββ
Behind him, everyone was moving. Robin had her hand on his back, grounding him with silent support, her own face blotchy and red. Dustin was crouched down beside Owens, already sorting through the med kit without even being asked. Murray was dragging over a folding lamp to give better light. Eddie was seething at the radio.
βCanβt let you fuckingββ Steve coughed again, grunting at himself. Stupid flu. βCanβt even get a head cold or take a NyQuil nap without you justβ¦β
ββ¦yeah,β you breathed, βheart attacks donβt really likeβ¦ havinβ yβroundβ¦β
He scoffed, nearly coughing all over again. Crying all over again. Panicking all over again, losing it all over again.
βPiece of shit war broadcast nonsense,β Eddie suddenly cursed out loud. βYou wanna give people heart attacks?βΒ
He was literally cursing out the radio.
Eventually he tossed it. βFuck you,β he spit. It kept talking in a monotone voice. βFuck you and the horse you rode in on.β
Alright, that made you laugh. Enough to cut the tension, just for a second, even though it was just mostly breath.Β
Eddie froze mid-rant, staring down at you.
ββ¦the hell are you laughing at, BowBow?β
You tried to answer but only wheezed for air.Β
Steve actually grinned through the tear-brimmed eyes. βSheβs laughing at you, Munson.β
Jonathan actually let out a laugh. A wet one. βItβs giving βremember when this happened last time,β huh?? Sβnot just me, right?β
βNot just you,β Steve muttered softly.
Eddieβs lips vibrated as he puffed out air. βCool, so this is likeβPTSD or whatever, right? Group PTSD.β
You sighed. βYeah, but yβmore ballsy thβstimeβ¦β
He barked a laugh. βYouβre welcome, sweetheart.β
Steve rolled his eyes to keep the tears from falling, now letting himself swallow back another round of coughing. Jonathan was definitely nibbling his lip raw.Β
Dustin? Poor kid was over it.
βWell Iβm not doing this shit again,β he stated firmly. Then he looked at your chest. βAnd neither is that dumbass.β
You hummed into Steveβs bicep. βYeah, youβtell itβ¦β
And then Owens, finally snapping gloves on, turned to the group. βOkay. Everyone either helps or kindly gets the hell out of the way.β
No one left. Not one.
They made room. They passed supplies. Robin fetched water. Mike got the stethoscope. Nancy hovered at the edge of the chaos, face pale, her hands clenched in fists β until finally, she stepped in, firm and cool but strangely protective.
Of you.
βWhat do you need from me?β
Owens didnβt even blink. βTake vitals. You know how.β
And she did. Her hands were steady. Her pout was tight. But she didnβt cry. Not outright, and not allowing herself until much later.
You tried to speak again. βSβokay. Iβm really okay.β
βDonβt say that,β Steve murmured, lips against your hair. βDonβt you ever say that unless itβs true.β
ββ¦sorryβ¦β
βDonβt do that either,β he whimpered.
You didnβt reply that time.
Because you were too tired and all you wanted was him beside you, making the pain go away. Him, and Murray. Who was also hovering with a godawful expression.
βYouβre about to see a whole lot of me,β he stated, voice low and commanding. βUnderstand?β
You hummed again, nodding gently as your hand found his. Your uncle also rolled his eyes to keep the tears at bay.
Later (though exactly how long later, no one really knew) Mike brought everyone back around to a really important topic that needed to be aired out.Β
βWhat El did,β he started, voice shaky but clear. βWe need toβ¦break that down.β
βPlease explain that,β Dustin added firmly.
βYeah, whatβ¦β Will was lost in thought next to her. βWhat even happened back thereβ¦?β
Eleven, still shaky, repeated what she felt. βItβ¦ it didnβt restart. It just reset. Like turning a light off and back on. Like when the power flickers. Just enough to change something.β
Owens went still.
Steve went stiller.
And then, quietly, Owens nodded to himself. Like a box had just been checked that heβd hoped to never touch again.
But Steve saw it. You saw him see it. And everything between you two cracked wide open again.
βYou knew,β Steve said slowly. βYou and herβyou already talked about this...β
Owens didnβt answer. He didnβt need to.
The way that Steve had said it was not accusingly. More than that, it was consumed with dread. Almost guilt. As if he knew this should have been explored more, just like the two of you had tried suggesting the last time.
He closed his eyes. βShit,β he breathed.
βSomeone fill me in here,β Nancy said impatiently.
βI second that,β Jonathan nearly blubbered.
Owen sighed deeply, looking at Steve and finding that he was already staring at him with a heavy expression. Then Steve huffed⦠running a hand through his hair before he let it fall back above your head.
βFlatlining,β he said bluntly. βThey were talking about the way that sheββ He paused to grit his teeth, jaw clenched. But one sharp inhale through his mouth got him through it as he gestured wildly. ββshe flatlined at the wall, then we got it going again. Thatβs what reset the rhythm.β
ββ¦and then it came back fucked,β Jonathan practically whispered, putting the pieces together.
βBecause you restarted it??β Murray asked, confused and a bit exasperated.
βNo,β Owens corrected. βTechnically, the shock is the cause. The surge. That gave it a harsh jolt.β
βSo then what youβre saying is,β Nancy cut in now, her eyes narrowed. βShe needs another shock and flatlineββ
βIβm not saying that,β Owens interrupted gently.
βBut is that what it is?β Lucas now asked from beside Max on the couch, who stared in panic, now wide awake from her nap and knowing better than to speak yet.Β
Murray gawked, his eyes flicking between you and the doctor in question. βWell is it??β
Owens sighed heavily.
Steve couldnβt even speak. Just stared down at you like you were all he had left in the world.
βJesus Christ,β Eddie muttered. βWhat the hell kind of fix is that?β
βItβs not a fix,β Robin said sharply. βItβs a goddamn gamble.β
And then the room divided. Half of them were whispering about whether it was possible. The other half were asking if it would kill you next time. Some said it made sense, but others said it makes no fucking sense.
The one to shut it all down was Nancy.
βENOUGH.β
It wasnβt a scream. It wasnβt even all that loud.Β
But it was final.Β
Absolute.
βJustβstop. Can we please justβ¦ deal with this later?βΒ
βThere is no later,β Mike nearly hissed.
βThis needs fixing now,β Jonathan stressed.
βShe just had a heart attack,β Nancy spat. βShe doesnβt need more fucking stress. Table this until tonight. Give it an hour. JustβIβm calling it now.β
Everyone fell quiet.
No one even moved for a hot minute.
Until one person did.
Steve reached out and pulled Nancy into a hug. It wasnβt long. It wasnβt even tight. But she gripped back like it was a life raft and then buried her face into his shoulder until he tightened it more before she had to pull away to swat at her face and mutter a strangled apology. He just offered her a small, tender, grateful smile in return.
You looked up at her. βWell, shit,β you croaked. βNancy Wheelerβs cracking. Maybe the world is ending.β
She laughed. Wet and broken. But she appreciated your sense of humor, because she was already weirded out enough by herself and whatever the hell just came over her. You, however, were silently beaming at her. And after sheβd sniffled another laugh, crossing her arms tightly over her chest and biting inside of her cheekβ¦!you timidly reached out a hand towards hers, giving it a squeeze. Nancyβs tight lipped smile at you was worth it.
And that was that.
Plans were made. Roles were newly assigned. You were staying in the Winnebago, curled up with Steve, whether he was sick or not.Β
Owens allowed it. Hell, he encouraged it.
βHeβs the only one whoβs going to keep her calm,β he said. βJust donβt breathe on her.β
βIβll breathe in the other direction,β Steve muttered, and he was already wrapping an arm around your shoulder while you settled into the mattress in the back.
Murray stayed. Dimitri stayed.
The kids moved into one of the tanks. Eddie went with them. Robin too. Jonathan and Nancy bunked with Argyle in the other. Hopper rotated outside, big shotgun in hand, pacing like a guard dog.
They had venison cooling in the bins.Β
The sky was darkening.
But inside that overstuffed Winnebago, Steve pulled the blanket up around your shoulders, kissed your forehead through the sweat, and whispered something into your hair.
You didnβt catch it.
But it didnβt matter.
Heβd say it again tomorrow.
Chapter Sixty-Eight
Sick Sleepover at the End of the World
March β’ 1987
DAY 6 (Classified Coordinates) β Late Night
The Winnebago creaked like an old manβs knees every time the wind flirted with its frame. Not that the wind was doing much flirting at all tonight.
The air was dead still. No snow. No sleet. Just cold. Bone-aching, frostbitten silence. The kind of night where nothing moved. The kind of night that scared the shit out of trained soldiers.
Because it was flying weather.
Perfect visibility. Dry enough for heat-sensor sweeps. No heavy cloud coverage to scatter radar. No giant storms to scare off surveillance. Owens had said it earlier, when he still had his coat on and boots half-tied, βTheyβll come on nights like this.β
So far, they haven't.
But they would come eventually.
Maybe in the next hour. Maybe tomorrow, maybe on Tuesday.
Steve Harrington wasnβt thinking about that right now, though. Because Steve Harrington had turned himself into a human pretzel at the foot of your bed.
βYour legs are under four blankets,β he now muttered from somewhere down by your shins. βWhy do your knees still feel like goddamn marble countertops?β
βWhy is your forehead a space heater?β you countered, not moving your own head from where it was pillowed on his ankles.
βI dunno. Ask my fever. That bitch has been freelancing since sunrise.β
You snorted softly. βStill think youβre the sexiest flu patient of all time?β
βObviously,β Steve croaked, then paused to cough into his elbow and sniffle like a four-year-old. βI mean, look at me. This is top-tier pathetic.β
You hummed. βYou say that like youβre winning. I had a heart attack twelve hours ago.β
βOh my God,β Steve groaned, rolling onto his side so he could glare up the length of your blanket cocoon. βDonβt pull the heart attack card this early, thatβs dirty.β
βYouβre snuggling my legs, Harrington.β
βAnd whose fault is that?! Youβre the one who made me lay down backwards so I wouldnβt sneeze on your face!β
βYou were sneezing on everything earlier.β
He huffed. βYou sound mad. Are you mad? Because Iβm snuggling your knees. I feel like this is punishment for being hot.β
βHot as in fever?β
βHot as in everything I do is flawless. Except my sinuses. Those are full of cement.β
The flu rasp was real. He sniffled again and tried to reach under the blanket to get to your socks, only to gasp and jolt backward.
βWaitβare these my socks?β
βI told you I was borrowing them.β
βTheyβre the thick ones.β
βYeah,β you replied flatly. βI had a heart attack, doth thou remembereth?β
βYouβre the worst.β
βWelp. You just so happen to love the worst thing thatβs ever happened to you.β
Steve Harrington, congested and clammy, still had the gall to grin. βEternally.β
At the front of the Winnebago, barely illuminated by the weakest of camping lights, Dimitri and Murray sat in the driver and passenger seats, the heaters dialed down to βmiserable but necessary.β The curtain between you and them wasnβt fully drawn. You could still see Murrayβs full silhouette against the windshield, his arms crossed, eyes ahead. The radio chatter murmured at low volume, just enough for them to both hear the latest from the border crackdowns and satellite passes.
No voices had come through the walkie-talkie system. No coded clicks. No rhythmic signals. That was a good thing.
No news meant no movement.
No movement meant no helicopters. No drones. No boots. No danger or threats.
β¦yet.
And still, Owens had passed the hell out, his long frame folded across the bench couch up behind you and Steve, blanket up to his chin, eyes shut but ears ready. The man hadnβt twitched since going down β but you knew damn well heβd wake at the first sign of arrhythmic hellfire.
Still, for now there was peace.
Even if it was the scariest kind.
You shifted slightly under the pile of blankets, nudging Steveβs shoulder with your foot.
βWhat?β he murmured groggily.Β
You wiggled your toes. βYou okay, lover?β
He sniffled a laugh. βIβve got VapoRub in every pore of my body and Iβm cuddling your calves like a Build-a-Bear, so. Define okay.β
ββ¦emotionally.β
Steve was quiet for a second. Then he answered in a voice so low you almost missed itβ¦Β
βIβm holding your feet like theyβll disappear.β
You blinked. Then blinked again.
Steve buried his stuffy nose into the crook of your knee. βDonβt make it weird.β
βI didnβt say anything.β
βYou were thinking it.β
βI literally didnβt say anything.β
βYou were thinking βSteve has a foot kink,β werenβt you?β
You doubled back, grinning. βI was notββ
βYou were definitely thinking that,β he groaned.
βYou said youβre holding them like theyβll disappear!β
βWell, you almost did, didnβt you?β
And there it was. The hush. The heaviness. The way neither of you knew whether to laugh or cry, so you did both.
βYou know whatβs sad?β you mumbled after a while.
βEverything?β
βWell yeah,β you coughed. βBut alsoβ¦ the kids. Theyβre all likeβ¦ fifteen. Fourteen. And they just do this now. Like itβs normal.β
Steve sighed and let his fingers trace the top of your sock. βYeah. I hate how good they are at it.β
βTheyβve grown up too fast.β
βThey didnβt get to grow up. They justβ¦ got older. Thatβs different.β
That made you quiet.Β
He was right. Of course he was right.
Max had woken up nine days ago. Nine days. After nine months. Her body still didnβt move right. She walked like the world spun sideways. But she was talking. Laughing more than not. Her laugh sounded different now.
But she was there.
And if that miracle could happenβ¦
Maybe the end of the world could un-end itself too.
Steve seemed to follow your train of thought, because he whispered it. βMax woke up. That still freaks me out.β
βMe too.β
βI keep waiting for her to go back to sleep,β he added. βI know thatβs messed up. I justβ¦ I think I still think Iβm dreaming.β
You stretched a toe to nudge his ribs. βIβll wake you up if it is, alright?β
βYouβll just flatline on me again,β he deadpanned.
You're shocked Steve actually managed to finally joke about that.
But you didn't let it get weird. instead, you leaned right into it.
You smirked wickedly. βThatβs the plan, baby.β
He rolled his eyes. βYou are my constant headache.β
The Winnebago didnβt creak. No gusts outside.Β
One camping light was placed near your feet, casting the smallest glow over the inside wall. Owens stirred once, mumbling something about electrolytes⦠then kept on sleeping.
Up front, Murray and Dimitri were still murmuring to each other. You didnβt need to hear them. You knew what they were talking about.
You also knew your babies, the Nuggets, were all safely tucked into Dingus 1. Just a handful of feet away, nestled up in a fortress of iron, camouflage and love.
They had Robin and Eddie with them.
The Cool Aunt and Whacky Uncle.
You turned your head slightly. βYou know theyβre probably telling ghost stories in there.β
Steve grinned, still pressing his pretty face into your shin. βRobinβs definitely telling them how dumb Dustin was that time he tried grilling bacon in her microwave.β
βShe lets him use her microwave?β
He snorted. βShe used to. Past tense.β
You smiled, eyes twinkling. βGod, those kids love her...β
βThey love Eddie more. Which is rude.β
βHe lets them say βshitβ without getting grounded.β
Steve scoffed. βI let them say βshitβ all the time!β
βHe says it with them. You say it at them.β
He blinked. βThatβs called motherly parenting.β
You snickered and giggled adorably at that. βOkay, mama bear, whatever the Cabernet justifies.β
He feigned offense. βChardonnay.β
You made a face back, like, oh my bad. But you were still laughing quietly, and you didnβt actually have to clutch at your chest. So that was a good thing, at least.Β
Steve wiggled his ankle under your head. βYou comfy?β
βYeah.β
βGood.β
A pause. Then slowly, he askedβ¦Β
βYou scared?β
You didnβt answer at first, just pressed your cheek into the thick muscle of his calf, letting your breath catch.Β
βNot when youβre with me.β
Steve sniffled. βSame, angel.β
ββ¦even with the flu?β
βEspecially with the flu.β
You laughed again, and it cracked like glass.
Steveβs voice broke too. βYou know what I hate?β
βWhat?β
βThat this is the calmest weβve been in days, and itβs still not calm.β
You turned your face up, looking at him upside down.
βItβs like my body knows somethingβs coming,β he said quietly, almost inaudibly.
βIt is, baby,β you murmured softly.
βBut my bodyβs sick and stupid, so itβs probably gonna miss the warning signs anyway.β
You nudged his thigh with your foot.
He nudged you back with his elbow.
βI think weβre all doing that,β you whispered. βWeβre all pretending weβll hear the warning first. Like weβll have enough time.β
Steve blinked hard. βBut we might not.β
βThen we go down swinging.β
βYou just had a heart attack, youβre not going down anywhere, okay?β
βTry and stop me.β
He plucked a tissue. βYou are the worst patient ever.β
βYouβre the sluttiest male nurse.β
βDonβt make that sexy,β he almost laughed at that. βI feel like shit.β
βYou still look hot.β
βIβm literally holding your feet.β
βHot.β
Steve snorted, which only resulted in him coughing into more tissues and cursing under his breath while you let your shoulders bounce in silent laughter, muttering a faint apology as he shot you a wry look.
Finally, you both let the quiet settle. It was⦠fine. Not fully comfortable, but also so uncomfortable. Not painful. Just quiet, even eerily so.
Until eventually, he spoke again.Β
βYou know you canβt do that again, right?β
You didnβt move.
He didnβt either.
But you answered. βI know.β
βIβm serious. You do that again, and Iβmββ
βYouβll what?β
He exhaled through his stuffy nose. βIβll cry, probably.β
βYou already are.β
βAm not.β
βAre you blaming your tears on VapoRub?β
ββ¦I stand by that, yeah.β
You reached under the blanket, finding his hand. And he let you lace your fingers through it, sickness be damned.
βYouβre pretty when you cry,β you said gently.
He huffed. βDonβt spread that around.β
βAww,β you grinned through your own glassy eyes. βWhy ever not, my love?β
βRuins my rep, my love.β
βYouβre cuddling my feet.β
βYouβre cuddling my feet.β
You smiled again, keeping the tears at bay as he did the same. The heater hummed. Owens shifted. The camping light flickered just once, then steadied.
Then Steve swallowed. βHey.β
You looked at him.
He didnβt say it directly.
Didnβt say I love you.Β
Didnβt say donβt die.
Didnβt say I canβt lose you.
He simply said, βIβm not moving from this spot, okay?β
You felt the tears return. βOkay.β
βI donβt care what Owens says. Iβm staying right here.β
You nodded.
Steve nodded too. Then he muttered, ββ¦unless I sneeze. Then Iβm rolling into the hallway.β
You laughed so hard you almost wheezed. βWhat hallway?β
βThe space between the kitchenette and the bucket of a bathroom,β he hissed humorously. βGimme a break, like goddamn, baby.β
You both laughed like that for a little while. And later, as you both started drifting, both of you tangled up and tired, fevered and mending⦠the silence stayed.
But it didnβt scare you. Not anymore. Because somehow, in the stillest hour of the night, with one sickly boy curled around your twitchy feet and a whole camp full of people watching over your sleepβ¦
Inconsistency with the Upside Down as a Wormhole, a clunky whiteboard slideshow.
Okay, forgive me if Iβm wrong, but I havenβt been able to stop thinking about it. Iβm not a science nerd or anything of the sort; Iβm just a fan thinking based on what has been told to the audience through the show. This may just be a nitpick. I may be going insane.
So, we've established, based on Volume 2, that the Upside Down is a wormhole.
What type of wormhole are the Duffers getting at here? Easy question. A manmade wormhole held together by exotic matter. We see this in Brenner's journal/Dustin's explanations.
What the hell is exotic matter?
(Don't mind the calendar whiteboard)
It's a type of matter (thank you) that has repulsive gravitational qualities. It is purely theoretical (except in Stranger Things, obviously). The repulsive effect opposes matter with a positive charge, which draws in elements towards each other.
This is a very oversimplified explanation, by the way.
This model should hopefully explain what I'm trying to get at here.
Exotic matter lies at the center of the Bridge (The Upside Down) in order to stabilize it, because of its gravitational qualities. To put it simply, it's "pushing" a hole in space-time in order to connect two dimensions.
This creates the flesh wall.
Thus, the Bridge connects Hawkins to Dimension X/the Abyss. For the sake of this theory/critique(?), the Upside Down will refer to the entirety of the wormhole, and a new term I've coined, Flipped Hawkins, is the inverted version of Hawkins that we are familiar with.
So, we have :
β’ Dimension X at the "top" of the wormhole
β’ Hawkins, Indiana at the "bottom" of the wormhole
β’ Flipped Hawkins, "opposite" to regular ol' Hawkins
Makes sense, right?
But wait... what the hell is this then? Is it a "flipped" version of Dimension X? That can't be it, in the show, it looks like this
Let's take a step back and see what "flipped" really means.
Let's start with Hawkins. aka Earth. Things like gravity work there. What does gravity do? Very, very simply. It keeps things like humans tied to the ground. No issues with gravity in Hawkins, nope. Everything is normal here.
How does gravity work in Flipped Hawkins, then?
Again, exactly the same. Our beloved characters stay tied to the ground. But the presence of exotic matter explains why. Its repulsive gravitational qualities affect all directions. If exotic matter is enough to stabilize the wormhole, with gravity, then that explains why gravity works "normally" here too.
The green arrows should help visualize.
Okay...what about Dimension X/the Abyss?
Normal here too. Vecna and Holly seem to be held to the same gravitational rules as the other "planes".
So what's happening in that fourth plane? The one where Holly attempts to escape out of? Does she flip then?
No. She does not.
She falls.
Having explained the patterns established by the show. I don't see how this makes sense.
(Pay attention to the orange marker)
I just canβt comprehend how Holly wouldnβt have flipped and instead fallen, even though it was established that exotic matter has repulsive gravitational qualities, which would, theoretically, keep Holly stuck to the other side of the Abyss/Dimension X. Her falling through does not make sense to me. She should have flipped.
This isn't a theory. I'm genuinely confused here. This probably won't be explained in the finale or anything like that, it just makes me mad how the Duffers are quick to write things off for the sake of plot convenience.
I'm not even saying that Holly flipping would have been better for the story. I don't think so. It's just that this show has so many plot holes and inconsistencies; this is just another one of them, and I'm tired.
[This is another nitpick, but with the (normally) opposing gravitational forces from Flipped Hawkins and the roof of the Upside Down, Holly floating dead center in the middle does make sense. But this is explained by Vecnaβs intervention, and still doesnβt explain how the gravitational rules donβt add up (which caused her to fall in the first place)]

A Trail of Crumbs: Netflix Puzzled Trends (as of 1/19)
Hey #ConformityGate truthers! Here's a list of all the Netflix Puzzled clues so far that support popular ST theories, and maybe spurred some new ones?
ConformityGate aka Vecna Won aka ALT ending

Clocks were the Jigsaw theme for the entire week of 1/7
Eleventh Hour aka pulling something off at the last possible moment (Bonza, 1/9)

Reason, Rationale, Apology, Excuse, Alibi aka all the things the Duffers, the writers, and Netflix will have to provide to get back in our good graces. (Keysmash, 1/15)
LOOK UP, which makes me think of Netflix's Don't Look Up which was essentially ConformityGate for the apocalypse. Also another way of saying pay attention. (Sudoku, 11/16)
"Don't Sweat It" + lots of 1s featured (Jigsaw, 1/17)
Double-Double theme as in two endings? + Succeed (Bonza, 1/17)

Before filling in OVEN, the letters were VN, which are also in Vecna (though that's probably a coincidence). (Keysmash, 1/18)
Treasure: The end goal. The reward. What you find at the X.... and, like Dustin says: "Treasures are always hidden in the deepest depths of the dungeon." (Keysmash, 1/18)
Tweak's clue was a "tiny adjustment". (Crossover, 1/18)

"Why So Shy?" aka being shy about coming out + koi fish represents perseverance and good luck (luck again) (Shapes, 1/15)
Rainbow Flag (+ Roll) (Crossover, 1/16)
Roommate: "And they were roommates...." π (Bonza, 1/17)
Four Leaf Clover: Another reference to Lucky Bear aka the Care Bear Noah got for his interview (and the green bear in the Rainbow Brite Puzzle)? Maybe this is the creators' way of saying Will is going to *finally* have some luck on his side.
Fantasy clue references Freddie Mercury, queer icon and singer of "Who Wants to Live Forever?" that was used in the promo of S5 (Keysmash, 1/19)
We're for sure getting Byler endgame -- and even if there's some pain along the way, luck will finally be on our boys' side.
Tharizdungate/"Mother Goose" is Tharizdun(?)
Spiral themes of the Jigsaw and Keysmash (1/7)
Spirals on the Jigsaw (1/11)
Thanks @whieen for sending me the photo!
"Flying Geese" (Starstruck, 1/7)
V Formation aka formation flying geese make (Starstruck, 1/14)
Shapes image for Who's Causing Trouble? was a Goose + the tidbit was "Famously aggressive" and "protecting a nearby nest" (1/16)
Keysmash kept to the bird theme: Incubator implies eggs getting ready to hatch, so another nest reference; Free-Range is another egg reference. Mother Geese lays eggs aka Mama's got babies!! (1/16)
Double Vision -- could this also imply there's two Big Big Bads, not just one (not just the MF)? (Sudoku, 1/17)
Soft-Boiled Egg -- another egg reference (Starstruck, 1/19)
Could Tharizdun be "Mother Goose"? Has "she" been pulling the strings all along for the sake of her lost child, the MF?
After all, ET has been repeatedly referenced on the show, and even the T-Mobile ad highlighted it. I originally thought it was about El, but maybe the MF is ET trying to phone home and find Mother Goose (like Patty is trying to find her mom in TFS, check out #pattyflayer by @henrysglock).
A Snake/Traitor
"That Bites!" formed a snake (Shapes, 1/10)
Snake was the Starstruck theme (1/11)
Agent: The clue went away, but it was "a spy who's a mole" aka a traitor (Keysmash, 1/14)
Snake for Crossover (1/18)
Looks like there's a traitor in our midst, but who could it be? Will? Kali? Robin? Max?
A Double (Someone pretending to be someone else)
Double-Double theme (Bonza, 1/17)
Double Vision (Sudoku, 1/17)
Mimic with clue "To ape or parrot" (Crossover, 1/19)
Fox is associated with tricksters. [@dawnschild pointed out that's what Henry calls Max] (Shapes, 1/19)
My brain goes to the MF/"Patty" first, but I may be wrong here. All I know is that someone is not who they seem to be.
Mike is Vecna'd // Labyrinthgate
Staircase // "Something that keeps going" aka M.C. Escher drawings on Mike's walls (Keysmash, 1/7)
Spade // "Calling a spade and spade" aka Mike having to face his own truths about himself to get out of Vecna's "labyrinth" (Sudoku, 1/7)
Isolated Areas + Stickman aka resident tall person Mike being trapped in isolation (Starstruck, 1/10)
Marked aka Marked by Vecna (Sudoku, 1/10)
Laundry as in "airing your dirty laundry" (also Mike compartmentalizing until now) (Keysmash, 1/10)
"Vacuum" "preys on [Mike]" (Keysmash, 1/10)
Toilet as in Mike's toilet water hair (Keysmash, 1/10)
Wheelie Bin aka Wheeler (Keysmash, 1/10)
V Formation aka Vecna's formation (Starstruck, 1/14)
Coffee: What Mike was drinking a lot of, presumably bc of lack of sleep aka marked by Vecna (Bonza, 1/17)
Tidbit about the Nile River: Denial isn't just a river in Egypt, Mike... (Shapes, 1/17)
Meteorology clue talks about Steve Carrell's character. While he was only a weatherman in Anchorman, he does try to become an anchorman in the movie Bruce Almighty... starring Jim Carrey who also starred in The Truman Show about a man who doesn't know he's living in a fake world/reality show about him (okay, that might've been a reach, but one of the puzzle names a few days ago was Six Degrees, so if we're playing that game...) (Keysmash, 1/17)
Staircases like the M.C. Escher art in Mike's room (Starstruck, 1/17)
Asphalt and Sky being reminiscent of Mike's jump at the quarry in S1 -- will Mike have to do it again to get out of the Labyrinth? (Jigsaw, 1/19)
Camus and Sartre both got the same hint "Existentialist you probably read in high school" I have a feeling Mike's going to get very existentialist here. (Crossover, 1/19)
Fantasy clue is lyrics to "Bohemian Rhapsody" -- the question from the speaker wondering whether this is real life or "just fantasy" (Keysmash, 1/19)
Mike is definitely the one stuck in the Vecna vision, and the only way out is through.
I think he's going to have to have to take a good hard look in the mirror in order and address the truths about himself he's been ignoring (his queerness + his love for Will).
And I think that, like Labyrinthgate suggests, Mike will repeat his quarry jump to get out -- taking a leap of faith for love.
Watergate/Lovers' Lake Gate/Pipegate/Hosegate/ RAINGATE?
Water ("tend to your thirsty plants") (Keysmash, 1/10)
Toilet as in toilet water ref. S5 Pipegate
Bathtub (Shapes, 1/11)
Fountain + Well (Bonza, 1/12)
Headwaters (runoff) + Rainwater. ie. "Here Comes the Rain Again" is on the WSQK vinyl. (Crossover, 1/17)
Stardew Valley (water symbolism). (Waywords, 1/17)
Bathtime + "What you do in the bath with your own dinner is up to you." (Shapes, 1/18)
CCR refers to the band Creedence Clearwater Revival, best known for their song (which was the clue) "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?" (Crossover, 1/19)
Clue for Adventure talks about whitewater rafting (Keysmash, 1/19)
As we know, water equals feelings on ST. And the UD has none, but we do know liquid causes the wall in the UD to freak out.
Will our people finally realize that water is the ultimate weapon there? Instead of fighting with fire (fear/hate), they're fighting with water (love).
And we're getting an *actually* romantic rain scene -- call it a feeling.
BirthdayGate
Accompanying Shapes tidbit was a quote from director Aki KaurismΓ€ki, who made the film The Man Without a Past about a man who gets amnesia and must rebuild his life with the help of a marginalized community (1/11)
Birthday Candles (Bonza, 1/12)
Birthday Suit (Bonza, 1/14)
BALLOON (Bonza, 1/17)
Dreamlight Valley (dream symbolism I've noticed w/ both "Patty" aka MF/the Creels, Dream a Little Dream, etc) is a life simulation game by Disney where the characters are under a curse that makes them lose their memories of their life in the valley. (Waywords, 1/17)
Meteorology clue talks about Steve Carrell's character. While he was only a weatherman in Anchorman, he does try to become an anchorman in the movie Bruce Almighty... starring Jim Carrey who also starred in ESOTSM (okay, that might've been a reach, but one of the puzzle names a few days ago was Six Degrees, so if we're playing that game...) (Keysmash, 1/17)
Abandoned clue was "Alone in the woods" like how Will vanished (Keysmash, 1/18)
"Upon A" as in Once Upon a Time, the show where the fairytale characters are cursed to forget who they really are. (Crossover, 1/19)
Birthdaygate is real, and it is likely that it will be affecting everyone's memories of Will (the way it affected Henry).
But memories can come back, and even if they don't, like in ESOTSM, if the love is strong enough -- love will prevail.
Time Travel
Clocks were the Jigsaw theme for the entire week of 1/7
Eleventh Hour (Bonza, 1/9)
Hourglass (Sudoku, 1/12)
Gears like a clock (Sudoku, 1/13)
Waywords themes cruising through different decades.
Waywords theme was Y2K but had Gameboy, which came out in 1989. Deliberate anachronism? (1/16)
Definitely getting a BTTF moment.
Lettergate
The First Letter was a Starstruck theme (1/11)
The Last Letter was a Starstruck theme (1/12)
Either Max's letters will finally come back into play, or we'll learn Mike had written letters to Will.
Return to Dimension X + USS Aldridge/Project Rainbow
Vast Land was a Starstruck theme (1/12)
Dimensional (Keysmash, 1/13)
Magnetic Field re: Project Rainbow using magnets to render the ship USS Eldridge invisible, sending it to Dimension X (Starstruck, 1/13)
You Sunk My... theme featured military ships like the USS Eldridge (Bonza, 11/16)
UNNUMBERED X (Sudoku, 11/16)
"Incubator" implies eggs getting ready to hatch, so another nest reference; "Free-Range" is another egg reference. (Keysmash, 1/16)
Two Gates: That seems obvious -- gates to the UD and the Abyss/Dimension X (Sudoku, 1/18)
Ben Grimm: As in the big, orange "Thing". But there's another "The Thing" that's been referenced a lot on ST. The beginning of that movie actually reminds me a lot of the beginning of The First Shadow -- with the USS Eldridge's failed mission sending them to Dimension X and being attacked by its creatures. (Starstruck, 1/18)
I think that not only are we going to see the real Abyss/Dimension X, but it's going to feature the wreckage of the USS Eldridge.
And, like the documentary suggested, we're going to get a big battle facing all the scary demo-creatures, including maybe some demo eggs that hatch ala Aliens???
SignalGate
Ham Radio (Crossover, 1/14)
Lightning Bolts on the Jigsaw (1/15)
Dungeon clue was "place with terrible cell service" (Keysmash, 1/19)
Signals will play a big role in:
Mike/Labyrinthgate of it -- did El, Henry, and/or the MF tap into Mike's signal that night Will disappeared?
Byler -- unclear signals between them that will eventually be made clear
Creelby (Bob/Henry) -- with the MF/"Patty" deliberately scrambling the signal to erase Bob and replace herself in Henry's memories
BobGate
Mermaid Diving aka Henry's Little Mermaid moment (Crossover, 1/8 I believe)
Heat Seal aka what selkies turn into (see above) (Crossover, 1/9)
Up, Up, and Away! aka Superman's catchphrase (Shapes, 1/13)
Ham Radio (Crossover, 1/14)
Emend: Definition: "To make corrections and improvements"; "alter (something) in such a way as to correct it" (Crossover, 1/14)
Love Shack + Peen (Love and Peen being right to each other, the shack looking a lot like Creel House) (Crossover, 1/14)
Right Triangles aka making more than ONE love triangle 'right' (Sudoku, 1/14)
BALLOON aka Mr. Baldo reference (Bonza, 1/17)
TVADs are wires used for TVs and other cable equipment (Crossover, 1/17)
Eek's clue was, "It's a spider, RUN!" Again, I think of Creelby: The spiders/MF for Henry, and "RUN!" for Bob.
Treasure: Reminds me of when Dustin says: "Treasures are always hidden in the deepest depths of the dungeon." And then Steve finds a Rubik's cube in the Rainbow Room. + Sean Astin played treasure-hunting Mikey in The Goonies. (Keysmash, 1/18)
Dungeon clue was "place with terrible cell service", which was a reoccurring problem in TFS that Bob had to fix. (Keysmash, 1/19)
Pleasantly surprised by the Bobgate confirmations (but I'm biased).
I think that not only will we be seeing Mr. Baldo, but Bob may have a role in Mike's quest out of the dungeon (that Bob is also stuck in since he was killed my the MF).
Thanks to these new clues, and this post about the Lost Knight and the Proud Princess (by @kirrroh and @imjustheretowastemytime), I now believe Bob may be on his own quest as "Rob the Relentless", trying to get Henry back and reverse his curse as the Fallen Paladin who broke his vow when he rejected Henry in 1959.
I think Bob is finally going to own up to his mistakes, face his own fears, confront Mr. Baldo, and fight this time, not just tell him to "go away". Bob's own big romantic gesture (with El's help) will allow him and Henry to reunite (even if it's in death).
Fairytales (Byler/Bobgate Adjacent)
Goose references tying back to Mother Goose Rhymes+ stories
Mermaid Diving (Crossover, 1/8 I believe)
Genre (Crossover, 1/18)
Ben Grimm as in Brothers Grimm, kind of like the Duffer Brothers (Starstruck, 1/18)
Theme for Keysmash was Hansel and Gretel by... the Brothers Grimm! (1/18)
"Upon A" as in Once Upon a Time (Crossover, 1/19)
Fantasy (Keysmash, 1/19)
These clues suggest that maybe this isn't a sci-fi (or just a sci-fi) after all -- maybe this story is also a modern fairytale.
This is the genre-bending the Brothers Duffer are up to...
Separated Lovers (Byler/Bobgate Adjacent)
Mermaid Diving as in The Little Mermaid/selkie myth (Crossover, 1/8 I believe)
Heat Seal aka what selkies turn into (see above) (Crossover, 1/10)
Plus Six Degrees aka six degrees of separation (Starstruck, 1/15)
Degrees of Separation (Bonza, 1/18)
"Split" pea soup re: separation being hinted at? (Bonza, 1/19)
If you've read my Bobgate series, you know there's been multiple interrelated texts that have had a common theme: Separated lovers.
TFS: Henry and Patty (but actually Bob) being separated.
Pagliacci: Canio/Pagliacci slaying Nedda and Silvio on stage.
Nina: Nina going mad after believing her lover's been killed.
Akhnaten: Akhnaten and Nerfertiti being slain because their love for each other, and Akhnaten's to his God, blinded them to the chaos raining outside their palace walls.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: Joel and Clementine break up and choose to have their memories of each other erased.
Dark of the Moon: The Witch Boy and Barbara Allen destroyed by the religious fervor by her small-town community, with the former forced back into his witch form, helpless to stop the community from killing Barbara and their child.
Selkies (when they're actually, mutually in love with their human suitors) having one night with their lover, to then be separated for seven years.
Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid: The mermaid, refusing to kill her lover, lets him marry another while she turns into sea foam.
It's what ended up happening to Creelby, and it's quite possible that may be what lies ahead for Will and Mike.
But what all these stories also give is hope: The "songs" always end with the lovers being reunited (eventually, somehow).
While I think Bob and Henry will reunite in love in death (therefore being "rejuvenated with life for love"), I think Byler's end will be more like:
Nina: Where Nina's "dead" lover is revealed to actually be alive, curing Nina's madness (which btw I think will be the case for Creelby too)
ESOTSM: Where J&C reunite, are immediately drawn to each other even though they don't remember why, and decide to try again
Cereal (Waywords, 1/9) as in Life Cereal (He likes it -- hey Mikey!) as in Game of Life
DND (Crossover, 1/14)
Stardew Valley is an RPG game about inheriting a plot of land [ppl have been bringing up the references about the "uncle" the Creels inherited the house from]. Also RPG implies a fake world. (Waywords, 1/17)
Dreamlight Valley (dream symbolism I've noticed w/ both "Patty" aka MF/the Creels, Dream a Little Dream, etc) is a life simulation game by Disney. (Waywords, 1/17)
Keysmash theme was Role-Playing Games (1/19)
Dungeon again, a DnD reference (Keysmash, 1/19)
Quest is what we're all on right now, and our characters too (Keysmash, 1/19)
These clues are being left on purpose.
A lot of them feel like teases, some feel like straight up spoilers. But we're being given time to piece things together from all these different sources for a reason...
Before the "finale" dropped, I'd never ONCE participated in ST discourse. I kept my theories to myself. I didn't interact with anyone. And then ConformityGate happened, and I was so pissed off I decided to write Bobgate to process my thoughts and all the dangling clues I knew HAD to be paid off somehow.
And through that, I've gotten that much more sucked into the fandom and have gotten to talk to so many cool, smart, passionate people on here.
Maybe that's the reason Netflix/The Duffer Brothers have taken so long to drop Vol. 4. They get to pull a crazy stunt/social experiment on conformity, fandom, and storytelling that goes down in history, but they also stage one big game for the most devoted fans to enjoy, form community, and figure out the ending for themselves.
In a way, we are witnessing an elaborate DnD campaign/ARG and WE are the players trying to figure out how the game will end.
Some of the GA are either still blissfully unaware of what's afoot, or don't have the imagination to think it's real. Some members of the fandom have dropped off because they've lost faith that everything we've seen might actually just be coincidence. Just bad storytelling.
But us? The ones still here, still playing? WE'RE a bunch of nerds. Like the Party, we peek behind the curtain. We don't just accept things for how they appear on the surface. We're curious, we question things and dig deeper. We care to figure things out. We seek the truth behind the lies.
So we may not know *when* the game will end yet -- so what?
So long as we're still playing and learning and exploring... Is the ST experience really over?
How Will is going to bring down the wall - my theory
Mr Clarke was talking about dimensional wormholes - shaped like an hourglass - a bridge. This is how the kids under Vecna's hold will escape through a bridge tethering Dimension X to The Upside Down, travelling between dimensions. Maxβs consciousness may be able to pass through this too. But the wall is blocking that bridge. The wall can be brought down using high levels of frequency. Dustin explained that the wall is a circular structure and ends at Hawkins Lab, where The Upside Down was first created. Robin explained in episode 2 that Will is like a radio receiver, Vecna is channelling the mind flayer's particles like radio waves to tap into the hive mind. Will is channelling Vecna's powers when he brought down all of the demos at the end of episode 4, he can see and feel what the Demogorgon sees and is connected to the hive mind. He can tap into that connection as long as the hive mind is near. So my theory is the gang will somehow find a way to trap the shadowy particles of The Mind Flayer in the radio tower so Will can channel them and use his power to bring down the wall. In the trailer, we see the shadowy particles of the mind flayer trapped in the radio tower. If Will is intuned with it, he could cause massive radio waves on an unprecedented destructive scale.
This will emanate loud radio frequencies from the lab which will bring down the wall and tear a door open to Dimension X, where Holly is. It's like when El made contact with the Demogorgon and opens the gate for the first time, maybe Will is doing the same thing with the particles but this time he is tearing a hole through space and time, opening a door to the bridge, it produces the same amount of energy but Vecna will somehow sense Will tapping in and infiltrate his mind as Will sees that his friends are in danger and begs for them to run.
Will needs to be close to the shadowy particles like Vecna in order to fully channel his connection to the hive mind. Eleven was the one that opened the door to the UD in the first place and banished Henry, Will was the one who gave it his form. That is why The Upside Down is stuck permanently in the year 1983 the day when Will disappeared. Dimension X only had one single form - a raggedy wasteland filled with monsters, the moment Will stepped in to it, he gave it its form because it reminded of his home but a colder and darker version of it. Willβs connection to it allowed it to grow and it made it easier for Vecna to catch him. Will can control the power of The Upside Down to use for himself as he can tap into his powers as long as the hive mind are near and can control them. Hence why he can channel Vecna's powers because that connection was near, Will can fully harness that and make it his own. His connection had been dormant but once he fully accepted himself, he could control his powers.
Will can use his own connection to The Upside Down and Vecna against him and destroy him for good because Vecna always saw him as weak, this is Willβs time to prove him wrong. Will could bend that connection and make it his own. Will could use those powers to close the gate from the right side up for good while El closes it in the UD, allowing the connection to be severed and the mind flayer to be destroyed and then he will lose those powers and get to live a normal life like Duncan McLeod at the end of Highlander.
The official Stranger Things twitter account mentioned the concept of a mind/memory palace, which is an imaginary location where you store mnemonic images.
You make a journey through a place you know well. Max made this journey through Henryβs memories.
When Vecna kills his victims, he kills their consciousness, which in turn kills the body. He then keeps the deceased consciousnesses as trophies in his mindscape, as we saw with Chrissy and Fred.
HOWEVER, in Maxβs case, he was unable to kill her consciousness because she was able to escape at the last moment because of the party's ambush (which for some reason, he had not foreseen to happen despite him claiming he has foresight and knowing they were there).
She simply died because of the severity of her injuries. So when El revived her body, her consciousness was revived but it was trapped in Henryβs memories as he nearly succeeded in capturing her consciousness. But now instead of remaining as a trophy on his walls, sheβs stuck in his memories.
The body cannot exist and function properly without the consciousness still existing; the consciousness is what makes a body mortal, which is why when the consciousness is killed, the physical body will be killed along with it.
In a video promoting the visuals of The First Shadow Play, Louis McCartney (Henry's actor) emphasized that this "evil version of Henry" made him "contort and convulse," which sounds rather similar to what happens to the bodies of Vecna's victims after he kills their consciousnesses.
However, after this contorting and convulsing was occurring on the fact that Henry and the Mind Flayer were fighting over the control of his body. Fighting for who would be the consciousness.
If Vecna is truly a puppet and the body's consciousness is hidden away, it would explain why the party was unable to kill him in season 4 and why he was now essentially indestructible in season 5.
He can regenerate himself because of his immortality.
In D&D lore, the Mind Flayer βcontrolled the minds of their life forms to use them as obedient thrallsβ βthey consumed their victimsβ very personality by extracting and devouring their brains while they were still alive.β
it did this very thing with Will in season 2, where it consumed his memories and was slowly removing his consciousness and personality as its tether to him grew stronger
It was quite literally said that when Henry returned from Dimension X, his personality was significantly altered from what it originally had been
In the play, Henry was shown to have a very gentle personality while opposing the Mind Flayer and simply wanted to live a happy life full of love. He hated what he was going through. 001, on the other hand, believed he was always different.
That he always hated the human race, when this was not the case at all. He wanted to take part in the human experience, but his supernatural possession prevented him from doing so, where even Pattyβs love was not enough to save him.
This is why this line is ironic (all while performing in a silly, terrible play), because we learned Henryβs backstory in the play, where he connected with the very person who was able to weaken his tether to the Mind Flayer.
It is also a double entendre to the fact that this isnβt Henry, as it is likely someone or someTHING acting as Henry.
What does the Mind Flayer do? It consumes their victimsβ personality by extracting and devouring their brains while they were still alive.
Which is likely what the Mind Flayer has done with Henryβs, using his body as a vessel for its own use and purpose, while his gentle and whimsy personality was completely eliminated.
The memories we were provided in season 4, werenβt Henryβs. They were instead the Mind Flayerβs, cursing the human society through its experience of possessing Henryβs body.
It removed his happiness, the innocence of the childhood he had prior to his possession.
First, because the Mind Flayer had not experienced it firsthand and second, because it hates these kind of memories. We know it feeds off of fear.
Just like Vecna took advantage of sensitive situations in the show and creeped into the mind of his victims, the Mind Flayer did the same with Henry in the play.
Without even realizing, it got into his head and made him fear that he would hurt Patty, that he "would kill a lot of things" "they want the same thing" "to let me in." while she said that everyone in his life is right, contorting her face into its skull in a nightmarish display.
These arenβt Henryβs abilities;
they are the Mind Flayerβs. Patty herself said to Henry, βyouβre definitely not the devil. Youβre just a weirdo.β EMPHASIZING that Henry isnβt some evil monster.
Heβs just a weirdo and a nerd, just like her. Just like all our characters. Those abilities of the Mind Flayerβs have been transferred to Vecna, because it is using Henryβs body as a vessel for its own use.
Itβs safe to conclude that the Henry we know in the play, is not the 001/Vecna we come to see in the show. Henry's consciousness that has been removed while the Mind Flayer uses his body as its own vessel is the trapped death imprisoned on a castle of grey sands of an alien world where it wails in eternal torment.
But exactly where is this?
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββDimension X is very much an alien world of grey sands.
But how could Henry be trapped here if simply a consciousness at this point? Where is the βcastle?β
Henryβs βcastleβ is the mind palace of the memory of him being sent to Dimension X. The Mind Flayer is holding him captive in this memory, where he lives in fear and wails in eternal torment.
It explains why that figment of 001 was so terrified to come into the cave. In that cave, originates the memory where he comes into contact with the Mind Flayer and his ultimate possession, destroying the childhood this child once had.
If Vecna looks for the secrets that will destroy others, he most definitely has one that will destroy him. And what could it possibly be? Henry being trapped in that memory. Because if he is recovered, he can finally kill the Mind Flayer.
We constantly have this reiterated in the show:
βI had a feeling he didnβt want me to see.β Max has not come across this memory of Henryβs prison, because it is quite literally where henry is trapped. If he is saved, his body becomes mortal and the Mind Flayer can be killed.
Patty's father emphasized to her, to save Henry, to save the boy. And yet, she was unable to, he succumbed to the Mind Flayer. He insisted that he is the key to destroying this shadow.
He must be saved and recovered in season 5 to make the body mortal again, which will finally give him the full possibility to defeat the Mind Flayer once and for all. But how can this happen?
In this poster, we can see a faded eye and a human eye, with one eye likely representing the Mind Flayer and the other representing Henry's humanness, as we know Vecna does not have eyes like these. They are the two sides to Vecna.
Lately, the cast has emphasized his past and his humanness. That he was once a good kid, that we have to question WHY he went from this gentle, quiet kid who just wanted to live a happy life to the evil monster he is now. What if this eye is young Henry's eye?
and then we have this somewhat out of place shot of lightning just above the human eye, which somewhat resembles the figure of a child as though it remains in the backdrop of vecna's mind.
And we mention it out of place BECAUSE it is only on this particular side of Vecna's face with an oddly humanoid shape, where not another shot of lightning is any where on the poster.
which is INCREDIBLY ironic, because that SAME SHOT of lightning was on the official mural for The First Shadow Play on Broadway. (found by amazing oomf tysm)
zooming on it a little bit more, we see the shape is the EXACT same shape. Just simply reflected towards the Mind Flayer, with the rays of lightning that are protruding from it appearing as though they are attached to this interdimensional deity.
and of course, while it may simply just be a ray of lightning, why reuse the same shot? one that resembles a human? why use it on a poster where it is so eye catching on the image?
knowing their story in The First Shadow, when Henry and Patty had their first kiss, the lights went haywire and the electricity surged (flickergate? π€) further representing this lighting as young Henry's consciousness trapped in Vecna's mind
now this piece is a bit of a nothingburger, but when we zoom in on the lightning figure, we can see one of the rays vaguely resembles an h / H / or the roman numeral for 1
a bit more of a nothing burger, but the lightning figure also somewhat resembles Henry in his boy scout outfit, which may have been what he was wearing when he was transported to Dimension X
this just further emphasizes the concept of Henry being trapped as a consciousness - the question that remains is how can Henry be saved?
Henry had romantic love. But he had no familial/platonic love.
As soon as he came back from Dimension X after his exposure to the Mind Flayer, his personality was significantly altered and he was supernaturally tortuered and tormented. He begged his family for help and none of them cared, they made his possession worse, speaking bad of him when he wasn't in their presence and refused to comfort and show him love when he really needed it.
When he finally met Brenner, instead of helping him through what he was going through, he made Henry's possession significantly worse.
Instead, it was Patty's love who helped him fight off the Mind Flayer until he was no longer able to.
Will and Henry are very clearly narrative foils. They are two very similar characters who could have the same ending, but they will have opposite outcomes. It only makes narrative sense.
Adding onto this, Will didn't have romantic love, but he had familial/platonic love. The exact opposite of what Henry had. The memories of the familial/platonic love that were provided to Will in season 2 were the memories that allowed Will to accept himself and harness his powers and use them against Vecna.
Just as Patty's love for Henry pushed him to harness and use his powers for good against the Mind Flayer, to save her father.
However, Patty's love was not enough to keep Henry against his tether to the deity. When Brenner made him unsure of Patty's love for him, that it was a weakness, it left him uncertain and it made him easier to give into the Mind Flayer, in a moment in which he was completely lost against it.
The same will likely be used for Will, if birthdaygate is true and currently in plan by Vecna. Leading to uncertainty in Will, making it easier for him to give into Vecna.
If Eleven finds Henry's consciousness, he'll meet a sister he likely knew he never had, and she'll let him know that:
that they are so similar
that what happened to him wasn't deserved
that ultimately that she sees him and that he is loved and that he is not some evil monster
In the show, 001 had her reach into memories that made her angry. Eleven will reach into memories that made Henry happy.
In a parallel to to Billy sacrificing himself in season 3
But instead, it will end in the successful killing of the Mind Flayer
Eleven will provide Henry the familial love that he had always desired and craved, the love that would have saved him had he had it before the Mind Flayer completely took over his body and trapped his consciousness
As we mentioned prior, Henry and Will are narrative foils
Two very similar characters who will have opposite endings
Henry was always doomed, everything that ever happened to him was never planned out or premeditated, he simply was in the wrong place at the wrong time
"It started with Will, it ends with Will." β No, it started with Henry, it ends with Henry.
They both will have their self acceptance, their familial love, and their romantic love. But only one of them can live on.
And that will be Will.
The Duffers say that characters like Eddie were always doomed for a tragic ending
We believe Henry falls into that category
He'll finally gain back control of himself and his powers after being reminded and reassured that he is loved and important
Where, in the end, in a bittersweet parallel to Star Wars (Anakin β Sidious), Henry will sacrifice himself against the Mind Flayer, ultimately killing it, but himself as well along with it.
Which we believe this official art by @ _james_martin_ on instagram portrays
Which will finally release him from the eternal prison and let him know peace after so long
And in that case, we believe that Will will experience a fakeout death, similarly to that in Harry Potter
As he is possibly the Eye of Vecna, he may remove his eye, which will kill him
However, once Henry succeeds with his ultimate sacrifice, Will is revived, as that connection that killed him no longer holds any tether to him
Sealing the beautiful stories of two characters whose arcs are fulfilled in similar, yet opposite ways
in receiving the love they had always desired
succeeding against the evil that had tormented them for years.
