digital note-taking is BETTER than EVER (apps you'll love)
Why I Let Go of My reMarkable Tablet and Embraced the iPadāFor Good
Itās been nearly two years since I transitioned to the 2021 iPad as my major tool for a paperless working ecosystem. To this day, I take pride in championing the switchānot just for myself, but for my team as well. Going paperless wasnāt exactly a walk in the parkāliterally and figuratively. Iāve been swamped and couldnāt do the much of the grounding practices I need on a regular basis. Goingā¦
The Clean Desk Chronicles: My Road to a Completely Paperless Office
Back in 2015, my old boss casually introduced a simplified policy inspired by the 5S methodology to our division. He called it the āClean Desk Policy,ā and it was more of a suggestion than a rule. As his assistant, I spearheaded it. The gist? Keep your workspace tidy and avoid printouts.Over time, I really started to vibe with the idea of a paperless workspace. The whole concept of not havingā¦
Paper Free Note-Taking for Plastic Free July
Plastic Free July is currently taking place. Itās a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution. Tried to capture plastic items for a post about the movement, but creative photography isnāt friendly to me these days. I ended up choosing this photo as a means for celebrating this monthlong, environmental campaign insteadāby sharing another greenā¦

Hi there! I havenāt been on tumblr since like 2012 but Iām back and Iām here to study! So if you have a study blog (especially if you take digital notes on an iPad) Iād love to follow you so give this post a like and Iāll give you a follow!
Whitelines: scanning your notes without a trace
As I am always on the lookout for meaningful ways of bringing the best parts of analogue and digital writing and note-taking together, Whitelines is another interesting product that I stumbled upon lately.Ā
Whitelines is a paper-innovation from Sweden - and the idea is as simple as it is genius: its greyish paper uses white lines (or: white ruling), which is where the nameās derived from, instead of the conventional dark ruling on regular white paper. How that shall help, you ask? Letās look into things.Ā Ā
The theory
First of all: What does this Whitelines-paper actually look like? This question is probably easiest to answer. And I will answer it with just a simple photo. It looks like this:Ā
Next, and according to the company, this white-lines-on-grey-background-thing is easy and gentle on the eye, sinceĀ
the background is tinted in a light grey tone which makes it less tiring for the eye than using a white paper [... because]Ā dark supporting lines have the same contrast as the pen you write with and that creates a conflict in your brain
and
markings from pens are dark they interfere with the traditional dark lines of ordinary paper. On Whitelines there is no visual interference between the lines and the pen colour.Ā
Ā The science sounds good,Ā doesnāt it?Ā
While this sounds great, I personally may have not used the product long enough or a more dark-line-conflict-resistant brain (who knows?!) in order to definitely conclude whether there really is that much of a difference when reading and writing on the Whitelines-paper as opposed to āregularā paper. This is also, since (unlike the example above, which is taken fromĀ the companyāsĀ website) the ruling ofĀ āregularā paper rarely is as pitch black as the one pictured above. Mostly, it is held in dark-grey tones, which I have never really found to be disturbing. But anyway, it is definitely also not uncomfortable to read and write on the Whitelines-paper. So I leave this particular judgement up to each and everyone of you out there - go and find out for yourself.Ā
The second claim, however, that those white linesā
background easily disappears when you copy, scan or faxĀ
is actually much easier to test. And, at least to me, also a much more useful advancement when you regularly digitize notes and sketches. So let us have a look at that and put the paper to test!Ā
The practiceĀ
So, first of all, I took some square-ruled Whitelines-paper as well as some regular white paper in dotted ruling that I had at hand, and tainted both of them in a similar fashion with a pencil, some fineliners and highlighters.Ā
Next, I scanned bothĀ ānotesā with the Genius Scan-App of my mobile phone.
And: the promised magic really happens! Unlike the dotted background of the regular paper, the ruling/background of the white lines-paper disappears completely! Really nice.Ā
To me personally, this might not be a huge benefit for my regular note-taking - but this is entirely because of my preference for plain paper for that purpose and has nothing to do with the product itself. For sketching, however, I do sometimes find supporting ruling pretty helpful, which is where the Whitelines-paper comes in really handy.Ā
If you want to try it out for yourself, you can download and print Whitelines-paper here (A4 and A5, lined and squared, as PDF) for free. If you like it, it can be bought here or here, for example.Ā
Feel Bamboo- The New One.
At times, I miss that phase when the touch phones had just hit the market. Each one came with a stylus by default, giving you that experience of a digital pen-paper along with finger gestures. I miss that because one wasn't confined. And stylus was a luxury that was complementary.
So, when I went in about a year ago to treat myself to a Galaxy Note and expressed this thought out loud, the vendor diverted my attention to a shelf section full of styluses. He hand picked one of them called Bamboo Feel in white to match the white Note and handed it over to me for trial. Not a word exchanged, without an explanation, I took the Note in my hand and tried working on it with the pen-like stylus. Pen-like because the slick white stylus is of the apt diameter to be comfortable in your hand to write with and comes with the most stylish cap to it that has a steel clip.
I put pen to paper, or rather stylus to screen, i was thrilled to bits. The screen recorded every subtle detail of my sketching. And as though that wasn't enough to impress me, handwriting precision on it was an absolute delight. For your information, according to your desire for grip and firmness, the tips are interchangeable. For me, it gave innovation and technology clubbed with digital note-taking and sketching experience a new high.
So, what did i do, along with my Note purchase, I also invested an amount of only INR 2,575/- into this sleek matte finished pen. In such wise, I also get to use the stylus along with my Galaxy Tab back at work. It's been almost a year now and never has it ever left my side. Moreover, I flaunt of being an environmentalist to all my 'go green' friends- to the extent of have gone completely paperless, kind courtesy my 'Bamboo Feel'.
