so I know Disney is in fact a moneymaking corporation that’s made plenty of questionable decisions,
and most of us are broke right now. But for those who aren’t, I think it’s worth showing support on one of the clearly good decisions they made. Lightyear (2022) has a gay character - not a queer-coded villain, not comic relief, not a stereotype. A lesbian who is the hero’s best friend, whose orientation was revealed calmly and tastefully, who is portrayed with a loving wife and family. And this was done in a spinoff of one of the most popular American film franchises.
Look at how many people they pissed off. All the negative comments online, all the countries that refuse to show it, just prove that this choice is (annoyingly) controversial but it was made anyway. After decades of trying to pander to all sides, whether it was forced or not, a step forward finally happened and they are standing behind it. We should too.
The movie is now available for pre-order, and releases September 13. I’m hoping all those homophobes who rant about how badly it ‘bombed’ at the box office will get shut up by DVD and Blu-ray sales. I’m not asking you to ignore your budget; just hoping to spread the word and raise awareness. Here’s to the future - to infinity, and beyond.
