Re-imagining a 2000 year old technology to power cities
IT SEEMS so obvious, it’s surprising that it wasn’t done ages ago.
That was the first thought of the Dargaville based engineer that has just signed up a multi-million dollar supply contract to some of the biggest councils in Australasia. The idea was a simple one - use the flow of water through the council’s water reticulation system to generate electricity.
While the idea was simple, it’s execution was not. The tricky part was coming up with a turbine that did not restrict the flow of water through the lines. “I’d come up with a couple of attempts that worked okay for charging a cell phone, but not much else.” It wasn’t until he was mixing up a batch of waffles with his kids that he had an idea. The system works like a kitchen mixer in reverse.
But this technology is not just about generating electricity - it is what the electricity is used for that sets this invention apart from others. Each turbine also contains sensors that measure water pressure and quality, which is then transmitted via the internet to the city headquarters. Rather than having to run routine manual testing, this self powered system keeps track of the city’s critical water supply system.
It’s not just cities that have noticed this technology. The Dargaville workshop has also been receiving inquiries from rural water users who see that the technology could help them monitor irrigation systems remotely. “For our Avocado plantation in the Far North, this technology would enable us to get electricity and computing technology to parts of our property that would otherwise be uneconomic” says one horticulturalist.
Due to the level of interest from industries outside of the target sector, the team has been investing in further research to develop the technology for application in other markets and developing economies.
