Blur presented the song, as a joke, to their record company as a potential single. But to the band's surprise, the label loved "Song 2." ❤️

Backstory. The song was initially written as parody song, which made fun of the famous grunge scene in the United States in the early 90's.

Intended as a parody of grunge, the lyrics of the song make no sense, and are a intentional dig at grunge bands such as Nirvana who would use strange and unrelated phrases to construct their lyrics. In this way the lyrics came off as hilarious, and yet they work surprisingly well with the music, especially that classic "Woo-hoo!" refrain.

[Verse 1] I got my head checked By a jumbo jet 🐘✈️ 7️⃣4️⃣7️⃣ It wasn't easy But nothing is, no
[Chorus] (Woo-hoo) When I feel heavy metal🤘🏻(Woo-hoo) And I'm pins and I'm needles (Woo-hoo) Well, I lie and I'm easy All of the time, but I'm never sure why I need you Pleased to meet you
[Verse 2] I got my head done When I was young It's not my problem It's not my problem
[Chorus] (Woo-hoo) When I feel heavy metal🤘🏿 (Woo-hoo) And I'm pins and I'm needles (Woo-hoo) Well, I lie and I'm easy All of the time, but I'm never sure why I need you Pleased to meet you
[Outro] Yeah-yeah Yeah-yeah Yeah-yeah Oh, yeah
Oh Yeah?
Hell, yeah!
God, no!
🎁Bonus:
"Song 2" is the second single released from Blur’s homonymous fifth album. It is a deeply catchy satire of grunge music. It is named "Song 2" because it appears as the second track on the album (both on Blur and the compilation album, Blur: The Best Of), it is two minutes and two seconds long, and it is composed of two verses and two choruses. Fittingly, it also reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart. sniff
Joke by Sicktracks: And this Track is so Sick, it reached number 2 without having to bear down 💩
🤣😂🤣
"Song 2" was first performed by the band on June 15, 1996 at the Hultsfred Festival in Sweden.
Damon Albarn told the audience:
"This is the other new song we’re doing. I don’t know what it’s called, and I don’t even know what it’s about […] ‘cos I haven’t really written it yet. We’re gonna do it anyway. At the moment it’s called "Song Number 2."
