Why are tigers orange?
You might know that it has something to do with camouflage, but how? Their bright orange color doesnât really blend in with their green forest environment.
A tigers diet mostly consists of Sambar deer, Spotted deer, Elk, Wild boars, and in some regions, larger pray such as Indian bison and banteng. What all these animals have in common are that they are all dichromats. Meaning that that they only have two color cones in their eyes. In this case only blue and green cones. (Humans, on the other hand, have blue, green, and red cones, making us trichromatic.) Because they donât have a red cone that makes them essentially red-green color blind. Making them unable to perceive the difference between red and green. So, a tigers color appears green to them (or at least their version of green).
But why arenât tigers just green in the first place?
Wouldnât that be better? So they could also fool the trichromats? Well, tigers are mammals and therefore can not make green pigments. A mammals color is almost exclusively determined by melanin. And melanin can only make shades of black, brown, yellow and red.
What about people with green eyes?
If mammals canât make green pigments, then how do some people have green eyes? Well, first we have to talk about blue eyes.ďżźBlue eyes are the result of low melanin and Rayleigh light scattering. When light enters an iris (the colored ring of your eye) with low melanin, the stromaâs (the middle layer and thickest part of the cornea) collagen fibers scatter the blue wavelengths back. Causing the Iris to look blue because there is too little pigment to obstruct the blue wavelengths. ďżź
Ok, so how do green eyes work?
Green eye work mostly the same as blue eyes but, they have a very specific type of melanin called pheomelanin. Pheomelanin has a yellow-red pigmentation. So instead of the light bouncing back as blue, it âmixesâ with the yellow-red, making a green color.ďżź

After the body swap, Aziraphale had discovered a secret that Crowley never wanted him to find out. When the swap happened, many colors had faded and the world seemed to look completely different to Aziraphale. The demonâs fiery locks had faded into a brown color, yet his eyes remained the yellow color that he had known for millennia now.
Crowley had always hated his eyes, and the color yellow. That just so happened to be Aziraphaleâs favorite color, mostly because of the demon himself. Trust him, Aziraphale was well aware of the demonâs hatred for his eyes in general, believing that they were just another insult from The Almighty and a reminder that he was the Serpent Of Eden, and had been the one to tempt Eve into eating the apple in the first place.
If Aziraphale hadnât been on apple tree duty that day, he most likely wouldâve never met Crowley. Well, back then he had been âCrawleyâ. His point still stood though. Sitting in The Ritz, Aziraphale blurted out the question quite abruptly.
âCrowley, why in all the years that I have known you, have you never made me aware that you were partially colorblind?â Crowley practically spat his drink across the table. Aziraphale wasnât surprised about his response to this, as he had given him no warning. Crowley mumbled a response quietly, but still loud enough for the Angel to hear.
âWell, when you spend 6000 years having snake eyes and being colorblind, you get used to it.â Aziraphaleâs eyebrows furrowed before practically dragging him out of The Ritz, despite Crowleyâs protests. He had an idea.
âAngel! Where the Heaven are you taking me?!â Aziraphale practically dragged Crowley back to St. Jamesâs Park, sitting down on bright green grass. Patting the ground next to him, he smiled at the demon who slowly sat. A few ducks wandered about in the darkness, the sounds of crickets filling the air.
âCrowley. I want to see what you see.â Crowley raised an eyebrow at him, Aziraphale chuckling softly. Inhaling deeply, he tilted his head quizzically.
âNgk, um, your eyes are a very light blueish-purple-â Aziraphale raised his eyebrows at him, hoping to fill in the word he was missing.
âPeriwinkle?â Crowley nodded, Aziraphale beaming as he listed off questions. He wanted to know Crowleyâs world. Through his eyes. Aziraphale pointed upwards.
âWhat about space? Can you see it?â Giving a breathy laugh, he nodded. Aziraphale snapped his fingers and a picnic blanket was underneath the pair.
âThe stars are the same color as your eyes. Never minded that part of being colorblind.â Aziraphale scooted closer to Crowley, his head resting on Crowleyâs chest as Crowley ran his free hand through Aziraphaleâs unruly curls. Pointing out constellation after constellation, Aziraphale gave small hums of agreement, letting Crowley know he was still listening.
He had made stars up in Heaven, although Aziraphale wasnât sure if he remembered that part. He still was fascinated by stars, galaxies, and nebulae just as much as he was back then. He tried not to show it though.
âThat there is Ursa Minor.â Nodding, Aziraphale let his eyes shut, still listening to Crowley. The Little Dipper. He loved seeing his demon so passionate about some of the galaxies he helped create.
âSo what is the true difference between a planet and a star?â Crowley seemed to answer a little too quickly, to his embarrassment.
âStars produce their own light and heat. Planets canât. Thatâs why we see them in space.â Aziraphale gave a small âhuhâ noise. Crowley was filled with knowledge of the universe that was just as vast as the thing itself. He had said this in a tone that implied that it was simply common knowledge and he didnât quite understand why some people didnât know.
Crowley was Aziraphaleâs star. He would forever shine brighter than a demon or Angel because he was different. The Almighty may have taken away some of his vision, but they granted him âImaginationâ. He was one of the most creative people he knew.
Crowley was akin to a star in the way he shined, but also, he was like a planet, forever orbiting Aziraphale. The two supernatural beings were their own nebulae. Colorful and bright. Gasses and dust mixed together in a beautiful galactic dance that created a kaleidoscope of colors.
Each time they interact, more and more protostars are born. Still young. Babies that are just starting out. And it will stay that way for billions of years. Like Crowley had said before, a nebula is a star factory.
They were each otherâs universes. Every touch, kiss, hug, creating an explosion of a supernova. Hot as energy surged off of them in waves. Then it was back to becoming nebulae again. The process happened in a never ending cycle. He glanced up at Crowleyâs fiery red locks.
He was Aziraphaleâs own Red Giant star. Exhaling, he let out a content sigh. As long as he had Crowley, he would be happy with his partner and every single one of his periwinkle tinted protostars.
