The Death of Louis de Brézé, Husband of Diane de Poitiers
On July 23, 1531, Louis de Brézé, a powerful French nobleman and courtier, died at the age of around 54. A descendant of the famous French royal line through his family connections, Louis served as Grand Seneschal of Normandy and held an influential position at the court of King Francis I.
Louis de Brézé is perhaps best remembered today as the husband of Diane de Poitiers, who would later become one of the most influential women in Renaissance France. Despite their large age difference, their marriage connected Diane to one of the most prominent noble families of the kingdom and helped shape her path toward the royal court.
After Louis’s death, Diane continued to rise in influence, eventually becoming the favored companion of King Henry II. While Louis himself lived in the shadow of his wife’s later fame, his position, wealth, and connections played an important role in the early life of one of France’s most fascinating Renaissance figures.
