15: last kiss

Mina catches Marco before he can make his escape. Dressed in a beautiful gown that is worth more than Marco can scrounge up in a year, she runs up to him and takes a hold of his hands. She says something about staying with her, living in Saint Petersburg together--it sounds beautiful, but Marco knows his place. 

And his place is not with Mina. Mina is too beautiful, and deserves so much more than he can ever give her.

Ripping a part of your heart hurts, but Marco knows he must do this. He takes a deep breath, places one finger on Mina's Cupid mouth and shakes his head. He says a few words of farewell. He touches her cheek, he turns to leave.

He pauses. Turns back because this is the last time he'll see Mina. His Mina. His lost duchess, his moon, his brave girl. Without words--words have failed them both too many times--he grabs her shoulders, gently pulls her closer to him. Kisses her the way he's meant to do for so long.

Mina has always had a flair for the dramatic. 

Just like a duchess, Marco thinks. But he shakes his head, "You belong here, your highness." He gestures with his arm to their surroundings, to the beautiful castle they are in right now, where an entire gala has been planned in honor of the duchess Anastasia. She wears silk and jewels. He wears frayed cotton and a ratty old hat."I am--I cannot. Give you. What you need."
