Note : This is my first time writing fanfiction again after a long time. Also, English isn't my first language, so constructive feedback is always appreciated! I used Grammarly to help me correct it, but I don't know if that thing really works...
Summary: When James Lee thought it would be a good idea to rehearse a scene with you. Or more like using you (?)
The sound of the door unlocking echoes from inside the penthouse as you relax in the living room. You then stand to greet James, who has just come home from work. James then walks into the room with his coat already hanging on his arms. Before you can greet him, you already feel something is wrong with him the second he closes the door behind him.
You notice it immediately, even before he says something. James is usually composed and quiet in his idol image. And you know it too well to question his sudden silence when he's home earlier than usual. But this time, his silence felt too heavy for you to ignore it. His usual cockiness around you is gone. No greeting kiss, he usually does, nor a smile from him. Hell, he didn't even bat an eye at you.
"Rough day?" You asked quietly a moment later from the spot you've been standing across the room.
James rolled up his shirt sleeve and put his phone and car keys on the nearby table. You watch him closely. His gaze is drifting somewhere distant despite the city light reflected in his eyes from the floor-to-ceiling window glasses. His expression is calm, like usual, but now there's something unbearably heavy behind it. Something that makes even you hesitate around him for a bit.
You tried to ignore it by thinking that maybe something had happened at work. Something horrible. Or maybe he is just tired. You want to ask him what happens, and maybe you could help him a little. Though youâre not sure if he really needs your help. Maybe, right now, he just needs something to lighten his mood first. So, without thinking much, you throw a joke at him. It's supposed to be a sarcastic joke, the one he loves the most.
You let out a soft breath, almost like a laugh, "If you keep looking like that, people might think you just killed someone."
That's all you got from James, who now turns his body towards you. If this were the usual James, then he would play along in this sarcastic game by replying to your statement with a half-joke and his cocky smirk. But now? He just silently looked in your direction before slowly walking towards you.
You notice his gaze first. He is looking at you dead in the eye. His expression is flat, but there's coldness behind those eyes. Your heart beat increases without you realizing it. It felt like a dagger was slicing your heart. Because no, even when he's mad at you, James never looks at you like he wants to do something horrible to you, like right now.
"James What happened?" With your remaining courage, you asked carefully.
James only keeps marching towards you. His steps are slow, but his posture seemed to carry an unpleasant, oppressive aura. You tried to call his name one more time, he didn't answer that one, either. And before you realize it, your back hits the wall behind you. He's been slowly making you walk backwards to corner you. Now, he's right in front of you. The atmosphere around you turns unbearable. It makes you feel suffocated. The dim light of his luxurious penthouse does not help in warming up the tense atmosphere in it.
When James finally spoke, his voice was lower than usual, carrying icy coldness from the way he talked, "You seem to be too comfortable lately."
His low, flat tone made cold sweat run down your back without you fully understanding why you are feeling like this. You want to move away from him, but you are already trapped by him without even realizing it. One of his hands was beside your head, while the other was placed on the display table next to you.
Your brows furrowed, you've already put on a face to defend yourself from his comment just now.
"What does that even mean?" Your voice is coming out a bit more aggressively than you intended. Maybe your self-defence instincts are acting up too much because of the pressure James is putting on you right now.
His gaze stays locked onto yours with that unbearable intensity while asking you softly, "You really don't know?"
You're throwing another question at him instead of answering, "Know what?"
Your response elicited a snicker from him. That laugh didn't sound good. If anything, it makes you feel anxious because it was similar to the belittling tone he used to throw at his opponents back when he was just James, not the polished idol DG. It doesn't even sound like amusement from him. His head lowered for a moment before he looked back at you with that flat, icy gaze.
"You really don't know," he murmured, "or⌠pretending to?"
Your stomach drops at his question. Something felt like it was squeezing your throat, making your breath hitch a little. Your expression changed to something desperate, with confusion mixed with it. Your voice comes out stuttering, far from what you like, "What do you mean by that? James, I swear, I genuinely don't know what you're talking about."
He didn't even answer one of your questions. Instead, he keeps giving you that look, like he wants you to disappear from him. Something is finally burning behind your eyes. You keep stumbling over any explanation or question for him. Your voice slowly turns weak while you keep stuttering to mutter every word you can form in that moment. Your vision blurred from the tears that began to gather in your eyes.
"James," you called him desperately, "Do you believe me?"
You murmured weakly, "I'm sorry. Iâm not sure what Iâm doing wrong. I justâ"
Before you could finish your sentence, James cut you with another sarcastic question, âSorry? For what exactly are you feeling sorry for? You donât even know what you're doing is wrong.â
He looked into your eyes, his gaze piercing straight into your soul, "I'm not here to tell you everything one by one," he exhaled through his nose for a moment before continuing, âI know youâre not that stupid.â
James then slowly trapped you further against the wall. One of his legs was between yours, holding you there. His eyes were staring boredly at you now. Your mouth opened, closed, and then opened again. You tried to say something, but it felt like all the words you knew were erased by James's tall shadow looming over you. You're searching for something in his eyes. But you didn't find anything you're looking for. Only flat expression. Only silence you get from him, and that's what makes it hurt the most because his silence is unbearable for you.
Your eyes are gradually blurring from the tears that are almost escaping you. Your lips are trembling slightly, so you bite them weakly to stop it. Because you hate crying. You didn't want to cry. You didn't want to look weak. Especially not in front of him.
âIââ your voice cracks a little.
Just as your tears were about to fall, that's when something cracked in James's expression. Then, suddenly, you heard a snort.
He is looking away slightly from you. He covered his mouth with one of his hands while trying to hold his laughter. His shoulder shook from how hard he tried not to laugh harder.
You're looking at him, confused now, "Huh?"
You watched him with tears still in your eyes. Seeing that, James could no longer hold back his laughter. You froze in your spot with a very concerned expression now. Your brain short-circuits with how fast this sudden change in him is. Your brain can't even fully process what happens before James slowly laughed while he was turning his head to you now.
Seeing your genuinely confused expression, James then pulled you softly towards him. He exhaled softly through his nose before his laughter finally stopped. Both of his hands are cupping your cheeks right now. He smiles so sweetly at you with amusement now glinting from his eyes.
"Oh, sweetheart, that was cruel, wasn't it?" He murmured, he sounds amused right now.
You now stared at him in disbelief, "...What?"
Then, without a warning, he kisses your cheeks softly while his thumb rubs beneath your eyes, where your tears almost fall. His low giggles didn't help to ease the atmosphere around you. Even when his signature cocky smile was back on his face, you didn't know how to react. Your brain seems still processing what happens right now.
"Easy there," he says, between kissing your cheeks again, then explains it lightly, "I was just practicing. It's just an act.â
Your brows furrowed further, "Practicing? You? At me?"
His voice is lighter now while explaining, "Yeah. I got a new role for upcoming dramas, and the director said I need to work on an intimidating scene."
Your eyes genuinely twitched at that. Does he actually put that whole psychological warfare on you just to practice?? Is he even sober right now?
James, on the other side, stopped giggling and tried to kiss your cheeks again. Before he can do that, you're faster to bite his hands that are still resting on your cheeks. Hard enough to make him jerk away from the sudden aggression.
"Ow." He waved away the hand you just bit.
You push him away from you while cursing him out, "ASSHOLE!"
You stomped away towards your shared bedroom, muttering curses under your breath, and slammed the door open. James watched everything with amusement behind you. You come back a moment later, bringing two pillows and throwing one at him, only for him to dodge it easily.
"You sleep on the couch tonight." You throw another one at him, but now he catches it smoothly.
With that last sentence, you slammed your bedroom door hard.
James, on the other hand, is smiling while picking up the pillows you just threw at him and bringing it to the couch with him. He is now lying on the couch, trying to catch his breath, with his smile growing wilder now.
Itâs been an hour since you went to the bedroom and havenât come back. He thought, maybe youâve fallen asleep. James then gets up and walks to your shared bedroom. Luckily, you didnât lock it. His steps were careful enough not to make a sound. When he looked at you, you were already lying on your side while turning your back on him. He closed the door behind him and walked slowly to the bed. He didnât sit yet, just standing at the edge of his side of the bed.
The moonlight that filtered through the gaps in the curtains didn't help his vision at all to see if your eyes were closed. Your breathing was quite steady, judging by the rise and fall of your shoulders. James then asked in a soft voice, "Are you asleep?"
A second later, you felt your bed sink under James's weight. He sat right behind you. His hand was placed close to your back, but he hadn't touched you yet. His head rests against the headboard, his eyes fixed on you, whoâs still facing away from him. He knew you weren't asleep yet.
âStill mad about earlier?â he asked with a rather calm voice. One of his hands moved to your head, and he slowly stroked your hair.
With that question, you finally turn around to him. You brush his hands away from your head aggressively enough, âYou think?â
James looked down while smiling softly at you. He took one of your hands and pulled it toward him. You tried to yank your hand away from him, but his grip is strong enough on your wrist. He keeps pulling it to his cheek and immediately leaning into the contact.
âI didn't mean to upset you.â
âWell, congratulations,â you reply quietly, âyou just did it.â
âI donât know you would be scared like that.â
You abruptly sit up, âFor fuck sake, James, you literally looked at me like you want to murder me!â
He seemed to be contemplating your answer, his brow furrowed slightly, âWell⌠thatâs not funâŚâ
You tried to turn your back on him but he already wrapped his arms on your waist and pulled you slightly so you're closer to him now. You tried to squirm away from him and failed immediately. One hand comes to your face then holding your chin up to make you look at him. His gaze is softened now when he looks into your eyes. You hate it when he's doing this because your heartbeat plays a stupid rhythm against your ribs so hard it's impossible to ignore it.
âI went too far,â he paused for a beat.
âI didn't mean to scare you.â Just that and a kiss on your forehead can make you melt away almost immediately.
He genuinely feels bad for you.
You can tell it right away.
It's unfair how he holds so much power on you. You held on to your pride but still leaned closer to him while grumbled in his arms. Your arms crossed, eyebrows furrowed, eyes narrowed at him.
âI'm still mad at you.â
âYou don't get to kiss me and apologize and you think this is over.â
He smiles at that, âOkay,â he continues, âhow can I make it up to you?â
You didn't answer right away. That's when James knows you already forgive him, maybe⌠for a little bit.
Then the world suddenly tilted.
âJames!â You gasp his name out of surprise.
He is now laying on his back, his hands securely wrap around your waist. Keeping you laying down on his chest. You tried to resist again, with no effort unfortunately. His thumbs draw a slow circle on your back. It always calms you down in a weird way.
âYou almost make me cry.â
âThat's how I knew the acting worked.â
He let out a quiet breath that sounded like a laugh.
âI will make it up to you.â He said softly against your hair.
âHow?â You murmured on his shoulder.
James looked up at the ceiling as if thinking. Well, because this was James, a brilliant idea popped into his head. You felt his mischievous smile against your hair before you even looked at him.
âI wouldn't put you through psychological warfare again next time,â his thumb stopped drawing a circle on your back, âbesidesâŚâ
âBesidesâŚ?â Your eyebrows shoot.
James grinning down right now, âshould we practice kissing scenes next time?â
That makes you look up immediately.
You smack his chest hard enough.
And James genuinely laughed at that. Still sounds entertained by your reaction.
I actually have a love and hate relationship with James right now (idk, I don't like his political era, lol). But, I really love pink James a.k.a idol DG đâ¤ď¸
