Jayson Green & The Jerk - Local Jerk / I Need Love - new act on DFA Records sounds like a DFA Records act
The DFA debut from longtime family member Jayson Green also marks the return of the classic DFA twelve-inch. Jay’s sung in a lot of bands. Like, a lot, all with great names. Panthers, Violent Bullshit, Cheeseburger, and, perhaps most canonically, the legendary hardcore band Orchid (who, it should be noted, just announced some reunion shows in May). He’s always been a smart and hilarious frontman, quick with a withering joke but never quite cynical. Now leading his own band as Jayson Green and the Jerk, he’s delivered us a classic a-side in “Local Jerk,” which sounds like a party because it was recorded during one: tight disco drums, big claps, a neck-rolling baseline, horns, gang vocals. You can literally hear the bottles clinking. The head trip is the b-side, “I Need Love,” which is a most terrifying, ridiculous piece of nightlife satire dripping in slo-mo electro.

Beloved Brooklyn dance-punk outfit LCD Soundsystem kicked off their epic 20-night Brooklyn Steel run on Tuesday night.

While Hannah Lew’s voice remains distinctive, “Mother” is not the Cold Beat of old. Don’t get me wrong, the songs are outstanding and catchy, but make no mistake this is driven by synths and 1980s inspired sounds. I absolutely love this release, I just don’t want someone coming into “Mother” expecting Grass Widow or Look Blue Go Purple.
In actuality, Cold Beat have been morphing for years. But this is a fully realized synth pop gem. Nods to Blondie, Cyndi Lauper, Gary Numan abound. But this is firmly rooted in today’s music - in fact some of the more ethereal moments recall the work of Lake Ruth. Throw in a nod to John Maus as well.
Cold Beat are from San Francisco, California. Mikey Young mixed this and it is being released by Brooklyn’s DFA Records (Larry Gus).
