“Dex! Turn that thing off!” Carlotta called from the office, sitting on her computer.
That TV has been going on for the last hour or something. She called her lover once. Then twice. And apparently the third time was not the charm. The movie already drove her up the wall as is - but the gunfire and explosions certainly drove her up to heaven and the stars.
The last thing she wanted was for her child to be up - again. Yet there had not been any crying in the time gone past. Clearly the new cot worked like a charm, though she wasn’t the one to take any chances.
The woman huffed “Miercoles…” as she got herself up. Her footsteps were as quiet as she could get it as she crept along. Not nearly as quiet as Dexter’s but close enough to not wake her daughter.
The sounds of the TV got louder as she got closer. Then she bumped into the culprit himself, surprised.
“Amor… first the radio - now the TV? What have I told you about turning it down?” she exasperated, indicating to her daughters room, eyes definitely on him.
“I think you might have the wrong suspect.” The man nervously smirked, pointing to where the TV is.
Carlotta rolled her eyes as she scolded “No. I’m not going to fall for this again. Just say you’ll turn it down and do it. Claro?”
The man sighed and crossed his heart “Claro.”
“Bueno.” She asserted… then she heard a child giggle.
Both parents slowly turned towards the TV.
What they saw was their little girl’s eyes being glued to the TV with what looks like a James Bond film. The latest film for that matter. And following an explosion from the film was their child clapping.
Both parents then turned to each other with faces of disbelief.
Carlotta was the one who went up and switched the TV off “Mija..”
The baby’s clapping ended abruptly. Then the crying came.
Dex rushed to get the baby in his arms. He whispered hushes and rocked her in his arms. His eyes darted around for possibly the radio. Carlotta then got chica from his arms as she tried to do the same but with a softer tone. But the child cried even louder.
When Dex finally got the radio out and got it connected, it started to blast out some kind of metal music with loud guitars and drums. But the child went silent.
The man frantically changed it to another station, this time to classical. This time, Carlotta could feel her daughter start to tremble before the crying continued.
Both raised an eyebrow, then Dex changed it back to the heavy metal station. Silence again. Though this time, a little more toned down for the volume.
Carlotta let out a sigh of relief, the tension in her shoulders finally going away.
“How did we have this child?” Dex mumbled wearily as he pinched the bridge of his nose.
The woman let out a tired chuckle as she started “Pues… when a man and a woman love each other very much -”
“- out comes a baby with her mother’s palette for chaos apparently” the man finished the sentence, smirk slowly creeping on his face.
“And her father’s ability to escape.” Carlotta added.
“What about her mother’s looks?” The man purred in her ear as he wrapped an arm around her.
“Hm… and perhaps her father’s charms” She professed as she leaned into him a little.
After a little while, they finally got their kid back into her cot. This time making sure the door was closed and they were reminded to get a better cot.
Finally, Carlotta held her head in her hands as she quietly asked “Are you sure we can raise her right?”
“Hey. Amor. Not this again.” The man had his hands on her shoulders, with his thumb rubbing circles.
She lifted her head and whispered “But what if though? She’s just watched something violent and… what if neither of us are there for her?”
The man softly sighed and held her face in his hands “Amor. That’s not going to happen. She’s going to grow up and be a wonderful lady. And we’re going to be right there for her. It’s as simple as following the plan. So no matter what - she’ll have someone. Claro?”
The woman hesitated. She trusted Dex, more than anyone. But his position as a criminal leader carried risks she finds hard to imagine. The glares in high life clubs, the way he looks over his shoulder, the constant moving he does - she’s seen it all.
But… no one came barging through the door yet. Maybe he was right. If he was as reckless as he said he was when he was younger, they would be in a different place by now.
Carlotta gave a nod and gave a kiss on his neck. To which Dex responded with a kiss on her lips.
