been back on my batman hyperfix and specifically been thinking about how id write the riddler, who's kind of become my favourite of his rogues (backstory under the cut !)
With his design i mostly just wanted him to look over-dramatic and confident, like he's rich and he want you to know it, and like all his clothes are custom specifically to suit his over-commitment to the bit
+ glasses options ! i feel like they're prescription lenses
Eddie Nygma has always had a bit of an ego. As a young boy, he grew up pretty well off, not particularly close with his parents, and incredibly intelligent.
He was a straight A student, showing mastery at just about everything he tried - be it literature, science, mathematics,etc - and that, in addition to his upper class upbringing, gave him a massive ego.
He was convinced that he was the smartest person in the room at any given time, looked down on his peers and even his teachers and other experts, and was cruel and mean.
He passed through his schooling about as smoothly as he could, not necessarily doing anything terrible, but successfully ruining any relationships he could have had with his peers, not really having any friends by the time he graduated.
Eddie went onto become an entrepreneur, starting a games and entertainment business (subject to change) and it was doing pretty well, but eddie's determination to be the best and most successful businessman drove him to start committing fraud and other underhanded business practices. Initially, it was the need for more, but after starting crime, the idea that he was smart enough to get away with it was what caused eddie to continue and even get more ambitious.
These crimes ended up being exposed by Batman (maybe they're linked to wider crime, or maybe the practices are really underhanded), and Eddie is sent to prison, and his company goes bankrupt. Eddie saw this as the most embarrassing thing that could ever happen to him, as well as a dig at his intelligence. As such, Batman became his greatest adversary, and upon buying his way out of prison, Eddie crafted the persona of the Riddler, hoping to finally outsmart batman once and for all, and, in his mind, to redeem himself from the embarrassment of being caught in the first place.

ive been looking into NPD as a possibility for him, but i want to get a second opinion on that, considering i imagine him to be a dramatic and flamboyant villain character, and im not sure if thatd be a good idea
i also want to have him be bisexual and aromantic but i feel like ad need a second opinion there too
i love the idea of him having his henchmen echo and query (tho id want them to be called quiz and query) and potentially miss tuesday as well
i had the inkling to make quiz and query a girl and a guy who are in a poly-fuckbuddy-situationship with eddie, but idk if that's distateful or not
in a batman story, id definitely want to have some villains be redeemed, and id want eddie to be one of them ! especially if i end up giving him NPD

I have a little headcanon that Ash is reminded of his past companions in all the little things; a book of pokemon facts reminds him of Max, he sees Brock in a plate of potato stew, Misty in every lake and ocean, May and Dawn and Serena in ribbons amd fancy dresses in windows. Playgrounds full of kids he bets Bonnie would love to run around (and Iris calling him a kid, always). He never forgets them, but he doesn't dwell on missing them. Why think of sad partings when ypu can recall all the good times,right?
Then Post-Journeys Ash sees a ostentatious gown in a window and thinks "Jessie would probably like that."
And it keeps happening.
He sees James and his bottle cap collection in antique collectors and markets, wondering if he still has them. He sees not just Clemont but Meowth in robots and electronics and Rotom-tech. He hears Jessie in women's laughter when it hits just the right pitch-
-and he can't understand why
Team Rocket aren't (weren't) his friends. They were at best a pain in the butt, at worst a hazard to themselves and everyone around them. They stole and cheated and lied and generally were awful,terrible people in all the time he's known them. He shouldn't be thinking about them at all, ever again!
((Except. That's not really true. He remembers Shamouti. He remembers all the times they DID do the right thing. He remembers things he didn't even know he knew about them. Their favourite sodas, how they shared and how they didn't, heck even their preferred kind of traps and attacks to use (Pokemon or otherwise!)!
And now they haven't shown up for a while and he. Keeps expecting every rustling bush to be them and not a wild Pokemon or trainer. Every shadow he passes under he looks up, he sees a balloon but it's just a cloud or a cliff or a tree and-
-and he thinks about it when he settles down at night. He can't not. Because they've always been there, dogging him and his friends' every step. All those traps and schemes, he wouldn't get away from without thinking on his feet or outside the box (or cage,sometimes literally). Pikachu and he wouldn't be used to adapting to weird and roundabout ways to achieve their goals if not for their experiences with Team Rocket.
Would he be half the trainer he was now without them? Would he have won without them? Become Champion?
He doesn't know.))
And now they've disappeared and given up and left him alone and he can't help wondering about them. They weren't friends, but they weren't all bad. They weren't companions, but they were familiar. Consistent. Always there.
The real world can be scary sometimes.. people can be scary sometimes. And the thought of both can be horrifying.
The real world never waits for anyone, and whether you're ready or not, it moves on.. and we can't keep up sometimes, because it's all too much.
In the real world, everyone is judged, everyone is criticized, and sometimes it feels cruel, because it's hard to process that possibly everyone is judging you. And it's so hard not to care when you're surrounded with judgement. When you're suffocating from the judgement.
How are we supposed to live ? When life just looks like hard obstacles.. when for every happy moment you get, you get a thousand sad moments ? What's the solution?
The truth is, everyone has a diffrent solution. Everyone finds a different way to keep on living and not just surviving. Because everyone needs something different to live for. Everyone needs a different reason to keep on living and not just breathing.
And everyone suffers while looking for a reason to live, no exceptions, because we're all humans. Because the path to happiness is as long and rough as life itself.
And along the way, we give up countless times, we give up over and over again. Almost like climbing a mountain, and giving up every once in a while because you can't see the top of the mountain, so you think about going down, because your attempts aren't fruitful. And that's exactly the way life works.
If you're working towards a goal, work for yourself, not for the reward.
Because as long as you work for the reward, you'll never win, you'll never feel fulfilled. If you don't do it for yourself, then no one else will.
And even if you never reach your goal your whole life, you'll die knowing you tried. Which is more rewarding than any goal you aimed for.
If you're satisfied with yourself, then nobody can bring you down, nobody can affect you. Not when you're truely satisfied with yourself.
However, the change in you isn't going to start with sitting still, it's going to start with actually doing something. And until you figure out how to reach your goal, try taking care of yourself as a main goal. If you're truely held together, then anything after that comes easily.
bruce's story is a well known tragedy ; he begs his parents to have one night together where they do something fun, and it ends in disaster. The Waynes were loving people, kind and doting, but between Thomas' hours as a doctor, and Martha's philanthropy, volunteering, and real estate work, the two were often busy. Bruce never felt neglected, not really, but one friday evening he demanded they spent a real evening together.
Thomas, ever the cinephile, suggested they go to the theatre, and unfortunately, the story plays out as it always does from there.
the waynes exit the theatre, a mugger demands their money, panics and shoots, bruce survives.
following the incident, alfred becomes his legal guardian and pulls bruce out of school to shield him from all the gossiping and watching.
while at home, bruce develops an obsession with the incident, and begins to turn himself into someone who would have been able to protect that younger version of him in that moment - someone smarter, bigger, stronger, more intimidating - and he came up with the idea of batman when he was 17
he knew of superheros by this point, id think, and though he knew that they all had powers, unlike him, gotham had no heroes, and he was determined to find away
he convinced alfred to help him create the batman. He studied engineering, programming, all manner of hand to hand combat. he met up with family friends and other mentors he could get his hands on, and learned how to wield weapons and control his body
shortly after he turned 22, he decided that he was ready, and batman could make his first appearance.

year 1 (or more like phase one) batman is very much like the batman from the matt reeves movie, in my head.
bruce wayne hasnt been seen for years, with some speculating that maybe he died too
the batman persona, and therefore bruce in genera, is very 'i am vengance', more focused on fighting violent crime on the streets and causing fear, rather than restorative justice or improving gotham itself, and he hasnt started any major philanthropic action
not sure if i like thomas and martha secretly being not great people - its fun to challenge bruce's perception of them but idk
just finished watching this vid on pre-crisis Jason Todd and I really wanna do something with that in my version
lot of foolishness under the cut
notes before I settle on anything
- I like Jason being part of a circus family, I think it can definitely enrich the dick-jason relationship, but I can't say I'm enthusiastic about giving Jason such a major similarity
- dick and batman being partially responsible for Jason being an orphan compels me, but I can help but wonder why exactly Jason would forgive them
- big fan of dick being the one to give Jason the robin role
- I feel like a definitely don't want Jason to be vengeance motivated. big on happy go lucky, big hearted pre-death Jason
- I loved nocturna as a character and I'm really fond of her and Jason as a pair, but I'm not sure exactly how I'd integrate her
one idea I have is that Jasons dad was a low level criminal who was estranged from the family, and his mom was a teen/very young mother who ended up dying
Jason was on the streets for a while before running into nocturna and her brother, and nocturna decided to adopt him. nocturna probably would still be having her brother stealing stuff, and perhaps Jason would, in his desire to prove he's worthy of being her son, would go out and steal the tires from the batmobile
except this is kind of a dead end because now there's no reason for Jason to be adopted by Bruce here, except maybe Bruce follows him home or takes him home or something? and ends up seeing nocturna and clocking that she's a criminal?
but then he'd have to arrest Jason's mom and that's not great
so basically idk, and scrapping nocturna may just be the move I have to take :/

as an acab truther (more complex than that but) i've been having sooo many ideas about batman and seeing this post (specifically the tags that were added on), its made me think about a potentially fun dynamic with one of the robins, probably jason
so, hear me out
when batman starts his career, i imagine him to have the mentality of 'when i was i child, i needed protection from this criminal' and he very much acts as the person he needed - a protector - which is a great thing ofc!
what im thinking is that bruce ends up realizing that this isnt enough to actually help enough people, and its at that point he enters the public as bruce 'brucie' wayne, and puts a lot of effort into philanthropy and funding hospitals and other things to help victims
separate from this, there's jason.
admittedly, i haven't done much research on him, so all this may change after i do that, but in my head , at least one of his parents is a criminal, and jason was raised with a very 'us-vs-them' mentality against the police
i dont know when exactly id have this come up (pre or post death) but i really like the idea of jason (and the way jason's parents ended up criminals, and how easy it would have been for him to be one too) making bruce feel a new kind of sympathy for the criminals he fights, and additionally increases bruce's interest in supporting criminal rehabilitation and things like that
(also ! harley quinn being a major villain for this part of the story could be interesting)
random other sub-ideas for this idea :
- what if jason's parent(s) ended up in jail as a result of batman specifically and it caused jason to need to turn to crime to survive, so he has a really empathetic view of criminals
- post-death jason saying bruce is no different from the cops who don't actually protect everyone and let villains walk free when it suits them
-arc with harley would end in her being sent to arkham (or somewhere else ?) to be rehabilitated
- post-death jason having tension with dick being a cop ? (idek if i would do that tho)
the idea of part of bruce's story being 'good people can go into a profession hoping to protect others, but if they don't humanize perpetrators of violence as fellow people, they'll only cause more harm in general'
its not a perfect metaphor ofc and it probably needs more refinement, but its giving me brainworms idk
