Quick reminder that Castiel was brainwashed for much longer than season 8!
Naomi implied that angels have been changing Castiel's memories and thoughts to be more obedient for hundreds of years. His reprogramming by heaven was happening on screen from season 4 to season 8, and yet I see a lot of people forget about this.
Castiel was a soldier for heaven for many years, but he's always drifted away as soon as he had freedom. It took him four meetings with Dean to start considering disobedience, before he was taken back to heaven and reset mentally.
