dear  bill,

thank  you  so  much  for  writing  a  letter  to  me.  my  favorite  part  of  the  year  is  getting  letters  from  children  like  you  around  the  world;  it  fills  me  with  so  much  joy  knowing  how  good  you’ve  all  been  this  year  and  that  you’re  excited  for  christmas,  just  as  much  as  we  all  are  here  at  the  north  pole.

I  know  you  were  good,  especially  to  georgie.  I  can  only  imagine  how  hard  it’s  been  for  you  these  past  several  months.  I  want  nothing  more  than  to  bring  georgie  back  to  you,  but  unfortunately,  even  santa  and  her  elves  have  limits.  I  wish  I  could  do  more.  sometimes  the  things  we  want  are  so  far  out  of  reach,  that  we  focus  on  them  and  become  blind  to  what  we  have  and  how  what  we  have  becomes  what  we  need.  nothing  and  no  one  will  ever  replace  the  bond  and  the  love  you  have  with  georgie—but  that  doesn’t  mean  that  there  aren’t  bonds  that  can  be  strong,  and  love  that  can  be  as  strong.  sometimes  friends  become  so  close,  they  become  family;  I  am  not  related  to  the  elves  in  the  north  pole,  but  they’re  my  family  regardless.  I  know  you  mean  so  much  to  your  friends,  richie  and  stan  and  eddie  especially—they  may  not  say  it,  but  that  doesn’t  make  it  any  less  true.  and  I  know  that  they  mean  a  lot  to  you.

you  also  have  a  friend  in  me.  please  don’t  hesitate  to  write  to  me  whenever  you  need  words  of  encouragement,  of  hope,  or  just  to  hear  that  it’s  okay  to  be  sad,  and  to  miss  your  brother,  and  to  feel.  it  doesn’t  have  to  be  christmastime;  santa  is  never  too  busy  to  make  time  for  her  friends.

she’s  confined  herself  to  her  room  for  the  better  part  of  six,  or  seven,  or  eight  hours;  the  only  way  she’s  been  keeping  track  of  passing  time  is  hitting  the  play  next  episode  button  on  netflix,  working  her  way  through  the  second  season  of  jane  the  virgin,  ignoring  all  calls,  texts,  tweets,  and  other  notifications.  at  least  teenage  heartbreak  had  the  decency  to  strike  on  a  friday  afternoon  and  give  her  the  weekend  to  grieve  the  loss  of  what  she  thought  had  been  something  real.  eric  lipskey  was  everything  she  could  ever  want  in  a  boy—sweet,  charming,  romantic.  at  least,  that  was  what  she  had  thought.  had  believed.  but  nothing  could  ever  be  what  it  was  at  face-value—of  course  he  turned  out  to  be  a  jerk,  just  like  ron  had  warned.  she  hadn’t  listened—couldn’t  listen—and  now  she  wasn’t  sure  she  could  face  a  chorus  of  I  told  you  so’s;  hence  why  she’s  silent  as  her  door  creaks  open.  she  pauses  the  tv  but  doesn’t  move  from  her  current  position,  laying  on  her  stomach  across  floral  bedspread,  arms  wrapped  tightly  around  a  teddy  bear  that’s  collected  some  of  her  tears  over  the  last  twenty-four  hours.  she  doesn’t  have  many  left  to  cry  for  the  moment;  it’s  a  blessing,  as  they  sit  in  silence  for  what  feels  like  hours.  then  bill  speaks—and  kim  can’t  help  but  sigh.

‘  does  it—does  it  ever  get  easier?  ’   her  voice  cracks  as  she  speaks;  she  clears  her  throat  softly;  it’s  useless.  just  like  everything  else.  why  did  she  bother  putting  herself  out  there?  it  always  ended  poorly.  what  did  she  expect?  eyes  sting—from  tears  already  shed  or  fresh  ones  brimming,  she’s  not  sure;  she  blinks,  hoping  to  quell  the  sensation.   ‘  does  this  emptiness  ever  go  away?  ’
