guess what, another post about music connected to my current fixation 🎉
thinking bout a certain Ryland Grace with the song Castaway by Derivakat (who, fun fact, i first started listening to ‘cause her banger dsmp songs, anyway-) because jesus fuck i need this song injected into my veins, and i need every body else to understand.
the title gives away what the songs about, for starters. i imagine its set specifically during that period of time after he wakes up on the hail mary, but before finding Rocky, where he’s still terrified and questioning everything. that weird mix of panic, loneliness, and desperation all wrapped up into one song. here’s some of my favorites, and the lyrics i feel fit phm the best:
“keep orbiting in circles, but nothing ever pulls me in / keep on searching for my purpose, cause i cant find it ‘neath my skin” <— about graces life on earth. distant from others, no immediate family or relationships, just as stratt said. he’s always been a bit disconnected from people, but never before on this scale where he’s physically thousands of miles away.
“scream my feelings to the night / can you hear me?” and “why am i so far away? is this how i’m meant to stay? / can somebody find me, feeling disconnected from reality” <— that realization of just how far away from his planet he is, and a foreshadowing of rocky lolol. the chorus is where that desperation is really felt seeping through the words
“stars aren’t made for lasting / fate that stays condemned” <— astrophage problem, dealing with the dimming of stars, and all the fun feelings that come with realizing you’re meant to die in space!! yay!!
connecting music to my current fixation has been something i’ve done for like, the past 4 years now. the fact that i get to do it with an artist i’ve been listening to for even longer than that makes it even more fun. i’m sure i could ramble even longer about this dang song, how the fast paced drums are the backbone of that feeling of panic and desperation like i’ve mentioned so much, the overlapping lyrics of the outro that resembles grace overthinking and spiraling over his situation, the fact that the whole album is themed around space and stars and- yeah. you get it. hopefully.
(here’s the link to my playlist w/ many other songs i might yap about some other time. sue me, i like promoting my own playlists LOL)
