Villains: Commander (1.3, LWT, 1972)

This where the idea of having not just an ensemble cast but an ensemble of writers #And directors comes into its own: it allows for a real variety of styles and stories while still retaining that common thread. Culver's #Refined ex naval type (or so it appears) is still a thief like David Daker and Martin Shaw's characters but he's a completely different #Man too. His world (and thus this episode) are much more insular and much more concerned with the internal mechanisms of the human mind #(a very neat touch making his character an engineer...). This would work just as well as a single play in the style of Armchair Theatre #With barely any changes needed; a sad bleak story of a profoundly unhappy and unwell person whose vulnerabilities and antagonisms have #Become blurred to the point where you're not entirely sure whether to hate him or to pity him. Leigh Hunt is fantastic as the love interest #Whose own personality is so changed between their current meeting and the flashbacks which make up the majority of the episode. Slowly the #Ep draws out exactly what there was between them and how things changed and finally provides the background to justify her final action #In the episode. Culver of course is brilliant; it's a tough line to walk in a role like this but he manages to keep just enough audience #Sympathy from going full villain. A glum moody but excellent bit of drama. Certainly the best episode so far. I have a Culver fan mutual #I think? @bunn1cula is it you? Have you seen this one?

I'm only one episode in of course so I don't want to call it prematurely #But I may have rather over excited myself for this. A curiously atypical Mackintosh product it seems to be eschewing the hard drama and #Intricate plots with a dash of humour of his earlier Warship and subsequent masterpiece Sandbaggers in favour of something..#Well humour is much more to the fore (and rather more obvious) whilst those strong plots have melted into the background. Again I'm only #On the first one so I should chill out I guess. Mackintosh had worked with Lee and Burton on Warship and would go on to work with Willis in #Sandbaggers; as in all his work the casting is excellent throughout. The late Stride is irascible but mischievous and makes his thriller #Writer adventurer strangely likeable (strangely because he unfortunately demonstrates a very 1970s attitude to domesticity and sharing the #Work load in a marriage: i hope further episodes will ease back on this because its pretty off putting tbh). Foster is much more #Straight forwardly loveable and will be a big boon to this series I think. The rest of the cast is rounded out with some decidedly oddball #Characters (huggable old Pat Newell playing of all things an amateur pornographer... Smh). We will see where this goes....

Napoleon And Love: Eleonore (1.5, Thames, 1974)

"If I go to war with Austria, is that good or bad?"

"Bad."

"Why?"

"You will win."

"Is that bad?"

"The rest of Europe will be frightened into fighting you."

"I shall win!"

"I imagine."

"Is that bad?"

"Sire... When an English prize fighter retires unbeaten from the ring, he opens an academy of boxing or takes a public house. Emperors can't do that."

"Do you wish me to continue to be Emperor?"

"It is necessary, for France."

"I am Emperor because I give France glory. Appetite comes with eating; I must continue to give glory."

"And when you retire?"

Or rather she exits the episode rather earlier than #Had anticipated. Will she return? I honestly don't know. I'm kind of glad by this point that I know so little about napoleon as it's adding #To my enjoyment of the show. This is a great Whitelaw episode and it's fascinating to see the way the relationship between Napoleon and #Josephine has changed since that first episode: here she seems genuinely to love him and to mourn his infidelity and the political #Manoeuvring to stay his wife is gone in favour of a seemingly genuine desire to be what they once were. Good old Peter Blythe has #Joined us too and Franklyn Robbins has a brief role as a fascinatingly creepy head of security. Napoleon's war machine thunders on #But the business of the day is begetting a son: cue some rather sad scenes with Whitelaw and a very subtle and layered performance #From Holm as a Napoleon who is indeed older and harder yet seems to have learnt kindness towards his wife in his own complex and #Dysfunctional way. Its a messy relationship but in a way I just want them to work it all out..

Napoleon And Love: Pauline (1.3, Thames, 1974)

Here we see the first real sparks of madness (or something very like it) and deep #Rages that come on suddenly. Napoleon is changed by life and grown older: not old certainly nothing near it but matured #And in the process grown harder and less innocent. Mackie plots his series in a fascinating way so that the political upheavals are kept #Very much in the background of napoleon's own life. In a spectacular revelation the viewer learns that Napoleon has successfully #Executed a coup in the final moments of the episode but with hindsight can immediately see that Mackie was planting clues throughout the #Entire thing: little throwaway comments and seemingly inconsequential details. It's spectacularly ballsy writing #This ep also adds a few new faces to the cast most happily including old favourite Peter Jeffrey as a more dignified and possibly even more #Serpentine replacement for Mckenna's now out of favour teacher figure to napoleon #Best of all! The horrible wig is by the end of the episode only half as long (we can but hope it is gone entirely by episode 4)
