Der Lindenbaum

Am Brunnen vor dem Tore Da steht ein Lindenbaum: Ich träumt' in seinem Schatten So manchen süßen Traum.

Ich schnitt in seine Rinde So manches liebe Wort; Es zog in Freud' und Leide Zu ihm mich immer fort.

Ich musst' auch heute wandern Vorbei in tiefer Nacht, Da hab' ich noch im Dunkel Die Augen zugemacht.

Und seine Zweige rauschten, Als riefen sie mir zu: Komm her zu mir, Geselle, Hier findst du deine Ruh'!

Die kalten Winde bliesen Mir grad' ins Angesicht, Der Hut flog mir vom Kopfe, Ich wendete mich nicht.

The collaborative process used to create, arrange, structure and prepare for the performance/presentation

          At the very start, we had trouble decided what instrument should the 3rd  pianist be playing, since there were 3 pianist and the sounds will overlap and the arrangement wouldn’t sound as nice. Furthermore, the xylophone only had one sharp (F#) while in E major there were 3 more sharps needed, so it was extremely limiting. However, we experimented with the xylophone and found out that it gives the piece a unique timbre and adds to the texture significantly. We originally decided to use the wooden xylophone, but later on, we changed to the metallic one since Ms Chen said we should use that and also it sounded way better than the wooden one. We split the parts to work on; Natalie’s playing the bass, Natasha De Costa’s singing the melody, Elizabeth’s playing the harmony and I was on the xylophone playing the counter-melody.

We composed our parts individually and when we met again, we put our individual parts together and made some changes accordingly such as adding dynamics and deciding on the way we want our coda part to sound. During the last session, we practiced with each other and attempted to perfect our coordination with each other especially towards the end of the coda where we had to slow down.

Day 4    ▪  edited some parts    ▪  vibrato in the variation to try make the peak more dramatic    ▪  somewhat finished 

Day 5   ▪  changed elizabeth parts   ▪  rehearsed together
