With the Denpa genre being characterized by themes of madness, isolation, and delusions spurred on by the believed presence of electromagnetic waves influencing those thoughts, as well as the bending of reality by the perception of the characters presented in a surreal way, I can’t help but try to find these elements in some other games I know about that aren’t explicit about it. And I came to the conclusion that Voices of the Void might actually unironically be a denpa game. Like, think about it,
- The MC, Dr. Kel, is placed in a socially isolated environment with nothing but his own thoughts and the horrors that lurk in the nearby woods.
-He’s constantly surrounded by radio towers, satellite dishes, and other similar devices as part of his job, not to mention the literal signals he receives from space. Especially with some of these signals being proof of aliens, which could exacerbate his conspiracy thinking even further
-The whole game feels like we are witnessing a man’s slow descent into madness as the days go by and may even become immersed into that role ourselves as the player. Kel hallucinates constantly throughout the game depending on certain conditions and exhibits very very strange behavior.
Like, the game is no milk outside a bag of milk, or shizuku, or needy streamer overload levels of surreal, but I don’t think it needs to. I feel like you can’t deny it has a lot of those elements of the genre if you really look at it, at least from my perspective of it.
