something i find fascinating is that dennis doesn't recognize dee as the controlling and abusive one in her relationship with ben, because he just plainly cannot conceive of women having any amount of power over a man; it has to be that she's being duped by him somehow, that he's secretly in control. it's such a perfect reflection of the way he's compartmentalized and dismissed his own abuse.

#everything seems so meticulously planned out its genuinely unbelievable and its ALWAYS the same three at the scene of the crime #there's an underlying mentality and reasoning considered within their portrayal of dennis that's Very noticeable and SO fucking consistent #the multiple older women who abused dennis as a teen are absolutely Established as undisclosed motivation. like. without a doubt.#klinsky is just one. an Undeniably Blatant one but there are At Least two more established in s4. and then there's whacked in s3.#it of course extends past the CSA because it is effectively just dennis as a character but i do think this is Why he's like that #it's not just that he hates being powerless it's that he's had to convince himself of this warped reality to protect himself from the truth #if it was truly just ego and a belief he was infallible it would present differently than it does #but he can't come to terms with the fact that he was raped rather than willingly and knowingly initiating. he has the power.#it's not about men inherently having and wielding power. it's about needing to gain the upper hand bc he knows what women are capable of #their hatred is love to him #ada speaks #dennisisms #character meta #dennis reynolds #there is much to say about barbara's place in this and how dennis treats dee as well but.#i will Never be finished talking about dennis and women.

i haven't been watching season 8 in production order, but its been on my mind, and i really do think dennis' characterization is affected by it all being out of order 😭 it's all over the place in broadcast order, he goes from being relatively well adjusted in one episode, then thrill-seeking and apathetic in another, but it makes a lot more sense, for example, to have Charlie Rules The World leading into Frank's Back In Business, then into Charlie's Mom Has Cancer.

he isnt interested in playing a character or "living life through a video game", but he gets the chance to assume the identity of brian lefevre in the following episode, which he hopes will fulfill that need for a Dangerous, Exciting, Disabling thrill. and what he actually gets off on is being caught in the end. real beer with real consequences.

and after all this, these leading (cut) lines implying he's taken it to a new extreme and has been fantasizing killing or (by this point) has actually killed people, we get Wedding Massacre, where we are led to believe he's been caught after killing maureen. by this point have plenty of reason to believe he's both capable of doing so and is almost certainly guilty... and then the twist is, of course, that he didn't.

#it just kind of occurred to me how Hyper he seems in charlie rules the world #and im wondering if glenn was channeling whatever HE was describing experiencing on the podcast re: mania #the extreme ups and extreme downs and the mania being great because it makes him Fun #but theres something so hollow about him even when he's in those extreme Ups this season #and i think that him realizing that even when he's not Down he's still unsatisfied and unfeeling #but he keeps trying to Feed the mania and doing shit that would normally thrill him and it's all ringing hollow #more and more extreme more and more impulsive more and more dangerous reckless and harmful #he doesn't even seem to want to get away with murder he just can't up the ante any more than that atp #idk. i still dont think he's a serial killer but Something was happening behind the scenes here that they nixed #ada speaks #dennisisms

#u know who couldn't see that anymore. lol.#this is about working With dennis as a duo to get things done #it's about him *choosing* to follow and about trusting a person to know what's right for them both #he needs someone to see the value of the range rover (in the river) and he also needs someone to help him pull it out #there's a delicate balance #he's not dependent or reliant on this person and he doesn't want to be. but he needs the guidance so he can decide what to do with it #i do think the cat in the wall metaphor has very little to do with being closeted #it's specifically about codependence and mutual partnership #that is textually what dee doesn't understand that charlie's correcting her on (which he understands bc of what he has with frank)#likewise dennis isn't ashamed of his and mac's relationship but he recognizes the problem with not being enough of an individual #he doesn't like being powerless no matter what form that takes. even with people he trusts completely he's afraid of becoming Too dependent #his car gets stuck and he has to find a way to get rid of it. that's the real problem. not replacing the relationship-- sorry. the car #he still cares for it! he wants someone to see how special it is! he can't just move on and he doesn't really want to #i do think this is something that is really highlighted in s17 where macden's dynamic works because dennis gets to be the Sidekick again #he's there to back everyone up. he acts as their impulse control when They go too far. he fixes it. he is the Support.#everyone misunderstands dennis because they think he wants to drive all the time. but he resents being their chauffeur #in 2x01 you can hear mac saying 'you're driving' to dennis <- which implies. this is not Always the case #it becomes the case.#character meta #dennis reynolds #dennisisms #ada speaks #i always have more to say on this but i'm running out of tags lol #iasip #it's always sunny in philadelphia #macdennis
