This was such an achingly beautiful book. The prose is absolutely gorgeous, the kind of prose I dream of writing myself, and the journeys these characters go on is heartbreaking and hopeful in equal measure.
Micah is such a difficult character. He’s all sharp, jagged edges, full of distrust, melancholy and bitterness. He’s experienced so much pain and heartache, has fallen so far, and his defense is to bite before he’s bitten. It hurt my heart and made him so hard to like sometimes, which is kind of part of why I loved him so much? Make it make sense.
Thomas is so good and pure and earnest and kind. He’s PAINFULLY kind. I’ve not been through a fraction of what Micah has and even I would be wary to trust his goodness. But there’s pain in him, too, quieter and less angry, and I think Micah genuinely brought more pain even though he brought more joy than Thomas ever knew was possible.
These two were just…so good together and even though I knew this wasn’t a capital R Romance, that it didn’t have an HEA, I so desperately wished for more for them. And yet this ending felt right. It worked in a way that a happy ending just wouldn’t have.
