The novelization of the film The Abyss was written by Orson Scott Card based on a screenplay by James Cameron and was published June 1, 1989. Card fleshed out the technology and the characters and gave them back stories. Cameron was so impressed that he added dialogue to film to reflect some of those events created in the book. he was nicknamed 'benny' 'trigg' and 'flash gordon' during the war
he was the fourth of five siblings - two older sisters, marge and mary, one older brother frank (may have been known by his middle name al) and his younger sister veronica (known as ronnie)
in a letter home to his parents from stalag luft iii: "You can tell Marge that I really am seeing the world now. Tell her she had better just stay at home and have romantic dreams about these experiences as actually they are not very romantic."
went to mass every sunday in the stalag (or at least told his parents he did)
his father, nicola, was born in italy and worked as a clothing designer for the merit clothing company
it seems he moved around a fair bit, having been born in philadelphia, lived in chicago (wilmette) at the time of his enlistment, was in westerville ohio when his father died in 1976 and died himself in florida in 1992
in a letter to his parents upon his liberation: "... my health and general condition are excellent. As a matter of fact, this little body never ceases to amaze me. It is not large, as you know but nevertheless is a fine piece of machinery."

Demarco knows enough that he knows the Husky he has brought to an airfield needs shit to do. Guess who gets trained to pick up tools and runaway bolts. Guess who plays tag with Billy and Sammy (they teach Meatball. He clearly understands the rules. None of the adults can figure out how because we didn't know shit about dog brains in the 1940s). Meatball cuddling with the ground crew in their tents because he has easy access but also they curl up and hug him when it's chilly outside. Meatball is living his best life.
Ken doesn't want to admit he can't sleep, but the bags under his eyes tell the story. He's in the tent by the runway with his crew, but Rosie doesn't give a fuck and honestly, neither do the boys. He shows up every night for four nights to make sure Ken fucking sleeps. Rosie comes back from Russia expecting Ken is gonna be exhausted. And he is. But he's back in the barracks because there's less runs which means less repairs. Before it gets dark the night Rosie gets back, there's a tent by the runway again. And a few extra blankets.
