Stingray Point Lighthouse (replica), Deltaville, Virginia, December 2020â €
While the original lighthouse met with an unfortunate end (as did many in Virginia), it once served as a safe house for six enslaved men who used the abandoned lighthouse building during the Civil War while waiting to catch a Union ship allowing them to escape slavery and join the Union army.

day 189: anchored
We arrived in Deltaville, Virginia day before yesterday and, in case you’re just coming across this blog now, we decided to anchor out not too far from a marina, Fishing Bay Marina. I gotta say, riding to and from shore in the inflatable dingy isn’t that bad. Yesterday, my boss took Gus and I to shore so he could have some puppy playtime and we could just take a little stroll, y’know, check the place out and all.Â
Last night I decided it’d be worthwhile to spend an ungodly amount of money on a cab ride one way to a meeting. But hey, do what you gotta do. I was a bit worried when I walked in though and saw that I was the fifth person to attend this meeting. How in the hell was I going to find a ride home so I wouldn’t have to spend 30+ dollars on a cab ride home as well? Fortunately, I was amongst a group of very kind individuals who all offered to bring me home. This gentleman with thirty-three and a half years was the one who ended up transporting me and although I hate talking during car rides, this conversation was somewhat stimulating. He asked me about my history in (and out of) recovery and told me about his. I offered him gas money, but he gave me the age-old recovery response, “People did this for me when I was new, so I’m helping you out... even if you’re not new, you’re still visiting and you were new to that meeting”. When he dropped me off, he told me to call him if I wanted to go to any more meetings - specifically on Friday night - while we’re in this part of VA and that he’d be more than happy to come get me so I wouldn’t have to spend any money on cabs at all.Â
Today is laundry day, so I just have to smirk at the fact that the dingy held me, my mom, my boss, Gus, two Ikea bags full of laundry, three empty water jugs to be filled, and not to mention our backpacks and Gus’ puppy play bag. I was impressed to be quite honest. As we wait for the previous person’s load of laundry to be done in the drier and for our first load to be done in the washer, I sit here writing this blog post while Mom plays on her phone (probably checking business e-mail, etc.), and Steve is walking Gus, letting him sniff anything and everything in sight.Â
This morning I had the utmost pleasure of picking up Gus’ poop... which happened to be right on top of my hatch that goes into my cabin. I was on the side of the boat pouring the water from the jugs into our water tank and all of a sudden I smelled this repulsive scent. I thought maybe one of the jugs had been dragged across Gus’ potty pad as we were bringing them to the bow where our water tank is held. But they had no markings of any sign of sewage on them. I decided to look around and low and behold, there it was: the massive pile of dog shit just resting on the top of my hatch. Seriously, Gus? I know you’re just a puppy, but seriously? What the fuck? Luckily, Steve was nearby and he was kind enough to bag up the exriments and toss it into Gus’ personal trash disposal bag tied off to the stern of the boat.Â
Hurricane Maria has kept us anchored in this small town because the winds have just been too fierce, and the weather was highly unpredictable. As I’m writing this though, the sun seems to be making a guest appearance in today’s forecast so we’ll see what it looks like tomorrow or Friday morning. I may try and make one more meeting while we’re here. I don’t want to go too long without one, because then I start thinking that I don’t need them as much anymore. I’m still communicating with my sponsor back in MD frequently, and I keep in contact with two of my friends from back in FL. I have decided to keep all of the meeting lists that I pick up from every area, so then when I move back to MD I can look back at them and reminisce about all of the (hopefully) good people I’ve met on this journey.Â
I’m still constantly taking pictures and videos, even though my boss hasn’t requested a skillfully-put together video from me as of late. It’ll only be a matter of time before he does though, so I stay prepared. Thanks for reading this post, and I hope that wherever you are, it’s finding you well.Â
