I feel like it goes without saying, delivery app drivers are constantly fighting a system they're working under without any of the benefits of an actual job if it means making a living off those delivery apps (much like myself).
They often gamify their apps for the drivers by giving them incentives, bonuses, and deals for working hard and long hours if it means making a return on gas and being prepared for any car maintenance or car accidents. And it begins to feel psychologically manipulative if it means keeping a good standing and reaching certain levels/tiers to get access to the best stuff by accepting garbage/low pay orders, thus wasting time/gas when it could have been better.
But the worst part is, the base pay is horribly low, and I mean, waiter/waitress low. These gig delivery apps heavily rely on tips, and I don't think a lot of people who use these apps for deliveries understand that.
Doordash's minimum base pay is $2.00. Which means it's entirely on the customer to tip their driver an appropriate amount to get a driver who's willing to pick up their order around the corner, or even a few miles out. But more often than not, people do not tip on around the corner/few miles out orders. Even a $2 tip, thus making it a $4 is STILL not worth it to most. Meaning you have a lot more people not accepting those particular orders = increased wait time for deliveries. The base pay can go up depending on the size of the order + distance + what type of items are included, but I've still gotten low balled so hard carrying out family sized meals for like $3-4 bucks sometimes. So it just feels like Doordash is making up whatever they want sometimes.
And I understand that delivery apps charge you way more than if you just ordered directly from the store, but my god, we need help if it means making a decent income from delivery apps like these.
If you use delivery apps like DoorDash, tip your driver at least $6-8 bucks minimum, especially if you're ordering from some place that's not even 5 minutes away from you. I guarantee you will make Drivers' lives so much less stressful and feel more at ease knowing they're gonna make a decent amount. If every order was like this and this was the standard payout, me and so many other drivers will feel less pressure from the system itself to maintain high stats at the cost of low end orders, gas, and car maintenance
And if you're ordering from a place that's quite the distance from your place, tip them by the mile minimum + a little extra. You'll seriously make their day, you have no idea. Cause I know I'm burnt the fuck out doing this for 3 and a half years, but this is the only thing I got right now that isn't taking the occasional art commission on the side (which I much rather prefer doing than driving around for 20-30 hours a week)
