Delicatessen
Dark comedy by French directors Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeanette.
In a futuristic world where people are starving and grain is currency, a former clown becomes the live in handyman in a building owned by a butcher. Unknown to him, the butcher’s shop is full of human meat, taken from passing employees and tenants who don’t pay on time.
It’s uniquely quirky, with a very particular aesthetic. This is Caro and Jeunet’s first feature length film. They followed it up with an equally odd dark comedy, La Cité des Enfants Perdus. Jean-Pierre Jeunet was then weirdly hired to direct Alien Resurrection, though I’m struggling to understand what about his two first films screamed “perfect for the Alien franchise” to the studio? He then went on to make the worldwide success Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain (Amélie, starring Audrey Tautou).
