» High cost of war: The U.S. Army stored Agent Orange in Danang, also a common place for soldiers to be found when on leave, and used more than 12 million gallons over the decade-long Vietnam War. This marks the first time that the United States has attempted to clean Agent Orange from Vietnamese soil and, according to U.S. Ambassador David Shear, the two countries hope the process will be the "first steps to bury the legacies of our past."

Hanoi, May 21 (Prensa Latina) - Vietnam received with evident discomfort the inclusion of the Dow Chemical company of the United States, which produces highly destructive defoliants, among the sponsors of the 2012 and 2020 Olympic Games.
To date no one has issued a formal pronouncement on the matter, but solidarity organizations and the Vietnamese community gathered in Paris this weekend, signed an open letter of protest while addressing the International Olympic Committee, which adopted such a decision. After announcing what happened in the French capital, the Voice of Vietnam radio station also reported on commemorative activities held on the occasion of the 122nd Anniversary of Ho Chi Minh. The festivity agenda included three exhibition workshops in support of Viet Nam, which highlighted the solidarity with the victims of Agent Orange, a deadly chemical formula that the Dow Chemical provided to the U.S. air force during the war (1964-1972). After being viciously disseminated on civilian populations, forests and fields, this substance has taken its toll on several generations causing mutilated and deformed creatures. Such victims and their families maintain a legal complaint before UN courts in New York, which systematically block its progress.
In the aftermath of revelations that human markers were employed by timber companies conducting aerial spraying of defoliants in Northern Ontario, the province has set up a new Agent Orange Hotline.
