Deep-sea isopods named after Greek gods and myths!
What do you do when naming new species at hadal depths? name them after Hades, Kerberos/Cerberus, Nyx (goddess of night), Erebus (god of shadows), and Apate (goddess of deceit).
Henry Knauber is a talented science communicator who has a knack for making even the most intimidating concepts seem fascinating. It was so much fun to speak with him about this new paper and we touched on everything- from how it feels to never see your new species alive due to oceanic pressure, to the best parts of working in deep-sea conservation.
I highly recommend you check out his instagram for more deep-sea stories and information.

Flag of the Deep-sea Exploration Association.
from /r/vexillology Top comment: A proposal flag for the Deep-sea Exploration Association if it even exist. The color white represent intelligence, knowledge and the scientific nature of the association. The 4 bands, each represent an ocean layer: \- The light blue on top is for the Sunlight Zone. \- The deeper blue below - the Twilight Zone. \- The blue-ish gray on the 3rd band is for the Midnight Zone. \- The dark one a the bottom is for the Abyss Zone and beyond. The white dot with a yellow halo represent the explorers and the submarine that they use, the yellow halo both represent the light that come out of the submarine, as well as the enlightenment received for those explorations. !wave
Telescopefish. This deep-sea species can swallow prey larger than itself and lives in depths between 500 and 3000 meters.
