It's a blessing when people allow you to see them. Like, really see them. Not their mask or perfected personas that are presented to the world, but the unfiltered versions of themselves.

The parts of themselves that are authentic, raw, messy and muddy.

These are the people I want to engage with.

The ones who are unafraid of the dark parts of themselves.

The ones who will hand you a candle and allow you to follow them down the scariest of corridors to locked rooms; down rickety stairs to their mildewed basements; or up the hidden ladder to their cluttered attic.

And while those places may feel uncomfortable or unwelcoming, it is in those spaces where we learn about their past, which gives an understanding of the what, why and how they became who they are.

Unlike the well decorated kitchen, super posh family room, or perfectly manicured garden...those closets, under those beds, and that abandoned storage unit is far more telling, and relatable to the average person.

So when someone allows you to see them without handing you tinted or rose colored glasses, count it a blessing. It is a dying art.
