I write a lot of draft scripts for video essays I hope to make one day. unfortunately, i also lose a lot of motivation for it and get a bit insecure with these scripts because after countless hours of writing, i end up feeling like im pulling things outta thin air or writing things no one else cares about.
one of these scripts was about Rock Howardās influence on fg culture. while Jin Kazama came first (or debatably Kyo Kusanagi if you want to be technical), the idea of a what a fighting game nextgen character was shaped by Rock and his reception. Enough so that Jin himself references Rock multiple times in Tekken 8 for the conclusion of his story arc (the wings in his win pose as stated by director Murray himself). Rock lead to the creation of Kā in KOF 99, which lead to Adelheid Bernstein in KOF 2003, which lead to Sin Kiske in Guilty Gear, which then lead to Ed in Street Fighter V/6, which lead to Leo in Tekken, Elliot, the twin everyone hated in soul calibur 5, Kokonoe in blazblue, etc etc
these characters, for the most part, are bishounen men who come to a crossroads in their mature, adult lives by being hyper-focused on their tumultuous childhoods. Usually a dead/departed mother whom they value most of all, a despondent father they loathe and blame all their problems on but carry on their cursed blood/fighting choreography with, and a found family they create afterwards. These characters largely focus on identity and what to make of yourself from a lineage that burns in your past. they center on the antagonism with their lineage and what they can make of themselves from it. Very focused on the āfutureā and commonly using bird iconography specifically as originating from Rockās own theme āspread the wingsā and the thesis of learning to spread your wings and make a new name for yourself.
thereās a lot more I have written down for it and maybe one day Iāll finish up that script to yap about it properly. Itās a topic I think is endlessly fascinating and has evolved so much over time. (enough so that Rock himself isnāt even the best example for the Rock Howard character archetypeā¦ lol)

honestly iām having a hard time processing all these. iāve obviously checked out of the rtah ages ago too, this blog was abandoned for 3+ years -- but itād be silly of me to pretend he didnāt use to bring a lot of joy into my life for literal years, that he isnāt someone i used to respect and enjoy and find likeable
