Here we go mother on the shipless ocean. Pity us, pity the ocean, here we go.
― Anne Carson, from "Sleepchains" in Decreation: Poetry, Essays, Opera (Alfred A. Knopf, 2005)
Anne Carson quoting Simone Weil in Decreation

"What is it that love dares the self to do? she will answer:
Love dares the self to leave itself behind, to enter into poverty."

Virginia Woolf, A Writer’s Diary
The whole effort of the mystic has always been to become such that there is no part left in his soul to say 'I'. --Simone Weil, "Human Personality"
GNOSTICISM VI
Walking the wild mountain in a storm I saw the great trees throw their arms.
Ruin! they cried and seemed aware
the sublime is called a “science of anxiety.”
What do men and women know of it?—at first
not even realizing they were naked!
The language knew.
Watch “naked” (arumim) flesh slide into “cunning” (arum) snake in the next verse.
And suddenly a vacancy, a silence,
is somewhere inside the machine.
Veins pounding.
