Point Pelee National Park, like many others in this country, is situated largely on unceded indigenous territory. The Caldwell First Nation, also known as the Chippewas of Pelee, were aggressively forced off their traditional lands in the 1920s when officials burned down their homes. This occurred despite the Nation's long standing ancestral claims and, even more astonishingly, despite the Canadian Government's promise of reserve land on Point Pelee in acknowledgment of their pledged service and support during the war of 1812. The Caldwell First Nation remains the only native band in southern Ontario without its own reserve land. #Canada150 #decolonize150 #sorry150 #truthandreconciliation #caldwellfirstnation #parkscanada (at Point Pelee, Ontario)
