Lamia
Artist: John William Waterhouse (English, 1849â1917)
Date: 1905
Media: Oil on canvas
Collection: Auckland Art Gallery Toi o TÄmaki, Auckland, New Zealand
Description
Early in his career Waterhouse painted Graeco-Roman subjects in the manner of Alma-Tadema. However, he was later drawn to the romantic Pre-Raphaelite style, painting the Arthurian legends popularised by poets such as Tennyson. Lamia (a second version painted in 1905 is privately owned in London) was inspired by Keatsâ celebrated poem of 1820, about a bridegroom who discovers on his wedding night that his bride is a monstrous half-serpent who preys on young men. As such, she is a classic femme fatale.

Dear Mr. Thrice-Knightley, I wish to inform you that I overheard your idle gossip at the ball last weekend and feel obliged to tell you two things: number one is that my dancing, contrary to what you think, is in fact very elegant indeed, and number two is that the mole you may have noticed on my exceedingly milky left breast is one which you shall never have the good fortune to kiss. That pleasure shall be reserved for one possessed of more than a piddly five hundred pounds a year. Yours never, Isabella Thorpe
Itâs been said before but it bears repeating that Jane Austenâs characters really are amazingly contemporary.
