I'm gonna be so for real with you "de-saturated love child of L and Matt or Light usually" is a big part of why I designed A the way I did.
I'd made A female originally because I remember seeing somewhere that in the Japanese version of Another Note, A doesn't have pronouns, or rather uses neutral pronouns, and, if that be the case, it will always bother me that they defaulted to male in the English version. "They" is literally RIGHT. FUCKING. THERE!!!!! Especially when you consider A is mentioned maybe twice, there is not a single fucking excuse to default A to male if their pronouns were neutral in Japanese.
I'd had her white originally because all the main Whammy's kids were debatably white, and I didn't put much thought into her design, I just knew I wanted her to be a girl out of pure spite (the English translation forced them one way, so I went the other), and I redesigned her to be black recently when I was fleshing out her character more and realised there's no reason why she couldn't be.
I'd already made her a woman out of spite, so why not make her black too? It's not like there's a rule saying all of L's successors need to be white boys, the writers of Death Note are just deeply misogynistic and probably racist 🤷

Don’t know how I got onto the topic, but I accidentally ranted to a coworker about how I love Labb and Beyond Birthday as a character. Then I realized I had been doing so for 45 minutes. Definitely not the longest I’ve ranted to a person about hyperfixations (cough cough, hours), but realizing I was ranting to a coworker?
I felt so fricking bad dude :’D I don’t know what her opinion of me doing that all was, but I apologized. I think she seemed mostly fine with it? We did create a new inside joke with Blues-harp Babysplit though, so at least there’s that. (Before that, she had thought Beyond Birthday was a funny name and so I revealed the other silly names in the book very dramatically one by one, making sure to reveal them from least crazy to most).
