There's something to be said about the portrayal of the women in Death Note as being more emotional, thus being "easier" to manipulate, control, and be outsmarted by men.
But like, a lot of the men in the story are also "emotional", like Matsuda, Aizawa, and Chief Yagami. Heck, Light's and Mello's motivations and character are emotional/driven by their feelings.
But the men are portrayed as being lovable, admirable, noble, and heroic, or cool, edgy, badass super geniuses. This lack of awareness in the blindspot of their writing and the authors' hypocrisy and double standards is ugh.
A lot of the fandom sees Misa as being stupid and annoying, but like, when you really look into it her and Mello's character are actually so, so similar. Except Mello's character gets all the applause, while Misa is just thought of as an airhead, obsessive fan girl.
There's also something to be said about a lot of the fans being sad about Matt's death, a character who wasn't even a character at all, but rejoice Takada's horrific death or don't care to see the tragic implications and circumstances of Misa's death.
I have even seen people turn their anger and dislike onto Halle (and/or Takada) for Mello's and Matt's death, and I'm like ???!?!!?!?. As if Mello (and Matt) weren't knowingly and willingly involved in and walking into a very dangerous situation.
Why is it easier for people to choose to hate on Halle (and Takada) than turn their frustrations on the actions and decisions of their favorite characters, like what Mello (and Matt) chose to do with their life.
Fans hate on Misa and Takada for being "stupid", "easily manipulated", used, and controlled, then cheer for their demise. But when characters like Mello (and Matt) meet their own demise, fans mourn their loss, but don't acknowledge that Mello (and Matt) were at least in full control of their lives and decisions, with no one using or manipulating them.
Oh, and there's the weird and frankly, gross way people used Halle's character in old Mello-centric fanfics. And the whole romanticization of the Mello/Sayu ship back then, ignoring Sayu's actual circumstances and the real effects the kidnapping had on her, in favor of propping up Mello's character.

okay so i feel like we don't talk enough about light giving up tennis. we don't get a glimpse of kid light in elementary school (before the death note) either. but it's probably safe to say he was just as bored as he is when we see him in the first volume.
okay so imagine that you're light, you know?
you're good at studies but bored and then one day in middle school you discover tennis and then there's something other than studying you can lose yourself in. it's tiring, it's sweaty and dirty and brutal (if you've seen tennis you know what i'm talking about) and it gives you a chance to not be refined, to not be controlled. because the very point of tennis is to lose control.
you play and you learn that you're good at it, and then you naturally claw your way up to the top and now you have an excuse to act in a way you know you shouldn't. so you take hold of the sport and never let go.
but then you graduate and everyone's telling you you need to focus on your studies to go to a good university. they're telling you you need to give everything else up. you know what distractions mean and you know that this is the end of the line for you.
so you give it up. but some part of you will always be thinking about the inherent insanity of the game, the feeling that you never can feel again.
the moment you lose yourself is when you give up tennis. it's not the sport, not really---it goes so much deeper than that but you don't know how to explain it. you're back to the boredom you thought you could escape from three years ago.
so your racket collects dust in your closet. until one day you discover something else---something more sinister, something as interesting---up and recognise it as a game, a player that matches you. until one day that player comes along, and that is the last and final time you will pick your racket up.
i don't think light ever played tennis after the match with l. i don't think he could bear to. how can you go back to that?
hot take (?) : L sits that way not bcs I Get Smort but bcs its a defence mechanism. in that perching pose all of his vitals are guarded completely by his legs which we know are quite strong bcs he knows capoeira. his offensive is with his legs so he positions them in front of his more fragile parts (we saw in L's One Day oneshot how thin he is) like his torso. he's incredibly reclusive and doesn't trust AnyOne . moreover i bring to you manga panels of L pre-reveal. all the shots we got of him before his face reveal were of him either standing OR we saw him sitting like a normal human (actually, it was similar to near's posture - ill deliberate on that l8r ) but he did need his High Intellect even then right bcs he was working on the case still - the only difference was that he was alone . also when he's at college w/ light & he goes w/ watari in his limousine he sits normally (bcs hes w/ Watari aka he is COMFORTABLE bcs watari has known him since he was lowercase)
ps. idk if this is confirmed or smth. i do know that l was supposed to be a rlly hot guy b4 his reveal so his habits may differ bcs his character was supposed to be different BUT STILL. IM ALLOWED TO THINK.
(I'm aware that the picture says girlfriend but the gender of the reader is not specified in the fic. The pictures were also edited by me).
Fluff // One shot
Summary: L was more like a machine than a human, he was cold, calculated and a "no fun and games" type of person aside from the occasional sarcastic or dry humored comment. L never lost his composure and would repress any emotion he had as a intimidation tactic. He was blunt and wouldn't allow anything or anyone to dethrone him.
However around you, L wasn't quite that...
The task force had suspected you and L were a couple, but whenever anyone asked about it, L would quickly shut down the conversation and went back to his work, saying that it wasn't any of their business. You and L were a couple but he just wanted to keep things secretive and professional since doing otherwise made him feel vulnerable.
He couldn't let his suspect Light know how much you meant to him just in case he used it against him, plus it was just in L's nature to be serective.
However as soon the doors were closed and the task force was gone, he would be nuzzling into your shoulder, whining for attention. He would never stop clinging onto you until he got he's way because in his own words, "I'm also childish and don't like to lose".
Like today for instance:
"Not now Lolly, I've got an appointment to book", you said sighing while L continued kissing your neck and nibbling your ear from behind. "I love you but I do not appreciate your lack of cooperation" L then grumbled.
Lolly was your main pet name for L since it sounded like it was short for lollipop, (and we all know how much L loves those) and sounded similar to his real name, Lawliet. Panda was also another common one since he reminded you of one with his dark eyes and pale skin.
He then kneeled in between your legs with his head resting on your thigh, looking up at you in annoyance in an attempt to guilt trip you, (however he couldn't mask he's pleading eyes). "Lolly I already told you I'm busy, just 10 more minutes okay my love?" you cooed while stroking his cheek. But L didn't care, he picked you up bridal style from your chair and tossed you onto the bed. "Lawliet, you should know of all people how important it is to not have any distractions from your work" you said rasing an eyebrow. "You make a fair point" L says with his thumb on his lip, "But I'm not feeling very empathetic tonight" then he proceeded to smother you with kisses.
Your dates were either cafe hopping, picnics in the park, or L trying to teach you tennis. You would always try to get him to wear shoes but he would refuse, saying "I don't like how they feel". "I know but I don't want you to step on a piece of glass and hurt yourself" you would say while kissing his forehead. "I will live" L would reply while blushing from your kiss. You would then sigh and take off your shoes, "Fine, if that's how you want to play" and you both would walk around barefoot.
Another thing L wouldn't budge on is removing all the cameras and wiring taps from your room, if someone broke in and tired to hurt you he needed to know immediately who was responsible so he could toss them in jail forever. He valued your life way more than his, afterall, he did challenge Kira to kill him live on broadcast.
L absolutely loved when you taunted his number one suspect Light, in fact it was his love language.
"I'm not Kira!" Light would yell.
"You're not a very convincing actor Light, but hey! Maybe they'll give you an academy award in prison just for trying. Light Yagami! Mass murderer tries playing innocent victim!".
As a detective, L would always be analysising people's behaviour and you were no expectation.
"How was your day darling?" L cooed.
"Fine. I'm going to my room".
You say that you're fine Y/N yet you're tone and lack of physical affection would indicate otherwise. Could you be trying to deprive me of your attention as an indirect punishment? What could have I done?
However, you did mention how your work load has increased because of the lack of empyoees, were you stressed from that and simply avoided me to avoid talking about it? I should confront you instead of making any assumptions, it could make matters worse because you might believe that I am deliberately ignoring you.
"Love, I believe I have done something to upset you, please tell me what it is was so I can correct my behaviour. Will you accept this piece of cake as a initial peace offering? If I'm not to blame then please tell me who's bothering you so I can potentially sue them".

I love picking apart death note because it’s so evident from htr that o&o did not intend ANYTHING other than making an entertaining story which means anything can be canon if I squint hard enough because technically nothing is canon
Matsuda has one throwaway line in the manga about his dad being disappointed in him when he quits the police (yotsuba arc)? Well maybe his dad was a police officer too and pressured himself bf Matsuda actually wanted to work in a completely different sector and
does Sayu know that something is Up with Light? Maybe she does, maybe not, and both are interesting to explore
who were Aiber and Wedy really? How did L meet them? What was their relationship like?
How did Mello join the mafia? How old was he? I’d like to imagine a freshly 15 year old Mello with the head of a rival gang leader (head bit is canon somehow!) turning up on their doorstep
you can analyse literally anything because they expanded on nothing except the main plot. Ohba didn’t even mean for apples to have any symbolism ffs you can ship just about anything and it’ll be equally as canon
In Death Note, Light Yagami wasn’t really playing God. He was playing a human.
His arrogance, his delusion, his hypocrisy, until his death exposes how human he truly is. His final scene in the manga, where he sobs and runs from death like a terrified child, is his perfect indictment: no matter how intelligent or righteous he thought he was, he was never a God. Just a selfish human being with too much power as the real God who watched him fuel his amusement, kills him.
Yes, I’d argue that Light Yagami would have become friends with L much more aptly and genuinely had they met in a world where he’d never received the Death Note.
However, I believe that as parallels of one another, L would have faced the boredom in Light that Light faced when L died and before he took up the notebook (and subsequently, L). If you — following my suit — also enjoy L and Light as a romantic pairing, they work best in a mutually-toxic sort of dynamic, coming together and entertaining one another by intriguing the other through stringing the other along. They’re both manipulating the other. It’s perfect, unwholesome, and unique in a way few other popular pairings do. They keep each other at arm’s length, so they’re close enough to strangle and be strangled.
