Dean doesn't like (to get emotional)

CASTIEL I’m sorry, but we have our orders. SAM No, you can’t do this, you’re angels, I mean aren’t you supposed to – You’re supposed to show mercy. URIEL Says who? CASTIEL We have no choice. DEAN: Of course you have a choice. I mean, come on, what? You’ve never questioned a crap order, huh? What are you both, just a couple of hammers?
DEAN Gordon! Don't do this. You don't kill innocent people. You're still a hunter.
dean thesis. dean's hunting thesis and monster ethics thesis. you don't kill innocent people.
one of my favorite underrated spn themes is dean being ‘weak’, especially weaker than sam.
his perceived weakness is one of the main conflicts of seasons 3-5. Dean has to struggle with the fact he ‘broke’ in hell, and is victim blamed by everyone EVEN SAM for it. sam is seduced and manipulated into thinking dean cannot save himself, only sam can. Thus the demon blood. this is all backed up by their past relationships with john: dean couldn’t leave him, even for his own good, while sam made the decision to leave and ‘become his own man’.
this is why they are such interesting characters. Dean’s apparent machismo is consistently subverted and challenged. The main conflict of Season 5 ends, not with a big fight, but with dean letting lucifer!sam beat him to a pulp. Sam overcomes lucifer because there is power in Dean’s consistent loyalty and love. traits he has consistently been scorned for throughout the show.
anyways these are just my randomly scribbled down monday thoughts, but I love dean so so much. the character depth, the complexity, the narrative followthrough!! sometimes spn really does hit

Dean when something terrible is happening to him: life’s tough but you gotta keep going
Dean when something terrible is happening to Sam: i’m gonna kill myself
Nothing will ever be as funny to me as the fact that society progressed so far in the time since 2005 that the demeaning homophobic jokes of vintage spn are now read as obvious signs of Dean Winchester's bisexuality. They based a cowboy on a bisexual man and tried so hard to make that cowboy straight that they accidentally manifested thee accurate long form portrayal of a closeted bisexual man on television. BiCon.
When you can only be emotionally vulnerable on your knees in the face of death
