Dean x Reader
Summary: Dean flirts with everyoneβ¦ except you. Suddenly, the guy whoβs usually so smooth canβt seem to string two words together, and Sam has to step in to keep things from getting completely out of hand.
Genre: Fluff β‘
Word Count: 3.1K
Sam should really get out of the bunker more, maybe get an actual hobby that isnβt research or running laps before breakfast. Most importantly, he should probably spend less time around you and his brother before his last functioning brain cells decide to mutiny.
Heβs blending a pile of vegetables in the kitchen when Dean walks in andβ¦ just stands there. Staring.
Sam can feel it, Deanβs gaze boring into the side of his head. He keeps blending. If he ignores it, maybe, just maybe, his brother will go away.
He does not.
Thereβs only so much liquefying you can do to a zucchini, so eventually Sam gives up and turns around. βWhat?β
Dean doesnβt miss a beat. βDo I look approachable to you?β
There it is.
Sam exhales through his nose. βWhat are you talking about?β
Dean isnβt even looking at him; his eyes are fixed somewhere over Samβs shoulder. βI mean, I think I am. I guess. But maybe Iβm not. Maybe I lookβ¦ I dunnoβ¦ standoffish.β
Sam blinks. βStandoffish.β
βIβm just saying, thereβs a line, okay? Too friendly, and you look like some creepy guy offering free candy. Not friendly enough, and people think youβre gonna stab βem.β
Sam shuts off the blender, grabs his smoothie, and sits. Dean drops into the chair across from him, and he stares expectantly, eyebrows up.
βDean, man... I have no idea what youβre talking about.β
βOkay, if you were a girl and saw me at a barββ
βGreat. Canβt imagine a better start,β Sam mutters.
ββwould you think I was approachable? Likeβ¦ someone youβd walk up to?β
Sam looks down into his glass, searching for the strength to keep going. Nothing. No strength. Just spinach.
βDeanβ¦ where is this coming from?βΒ
Dean Winchester, the man who has picked up so many women he's lost count. And yet here he is, acting like he needs a pep talk.
Finally, Sam sighs, giving his brother at least the courtesy of an honest answer. βYouβre approachable. Youβreβ¦ you. People like you.β
Deanβs expression doesnβt ease at the reassurance. If anything, he looks more frustrated, brow furrowed, mouth in a pout that heβd absolutely deny making. βThen what the hell was she talking about?β
ββ¦What? Who?β
Samβs eyes widen. Oh. Oh.
You.
He lets out a long, exhausted sigh. Shakes his head. βDeanβ¦ dude. Just talk to her.β
βI talk to her,β his brother insists.
βUh-huh. And thatβs why youβre in here interrogating me about your βapproachability,β right?β Sam deadpans, leaning back with the weary authority of a brother who has lived through this many, many times.
βWhatever,β Dean grumbles, immediately hating where this is going. He pushes up from the table and heads for the coffee machine, chewing on his bottom lip like heβs trying to think a hole through it.
Two minutes later, you step into the kitchen, heading straight for the fridge like you always do. And Sam sees it. God, he sees all of it. Front-row seats.
Dean cuts a glance at you from the corner of his eye, stands a little straighter, then his hand shoots up to flatten his hair. Sam just shakes his head. He swears heβs going to start avoiding the kitchen entirely when the two of you are in here together.
βWould you hand me a spoon, handsome?β you ask, completely unaware of what you just triggered.
Sam watches Dean freeze at the pet name.Β
βSpoon. Yeah. We, uhβ¦ we have spoons,β he stammers, somehow producing one like itβs a rare artifact. He hands it to you with the confidence of a Victorian maiden having her first conversation with a man.
Then he retreats to the safety of the coffee machine.
Yogurt and spoon in hand, you head out of the kitchen. Deanβs eyes track you the whole way, drawn like a magnet. The instant you disappear down the hall, something in him lights up.
The man beams.
βHandsome,β he says to the empty air, chest puffing up. βShe thinks Iβm handsome.β
Then he spins on his heel and strides out of the kitchen, riding the high.
Sam shakes his head, muttering, βUnbelievable.β
Two seconds later, Dean reappears, deflating the dramatic exit. βForgot my coffee,β he says, grabbing the mug with forced nonchalance. He doesnβt make eye contact.
Sam just snorts.Β
β
Itβs been around two hours when you spot Sam in the library, typing away on his computer.
You sit down across from him and wait.
When his eyes finally lift from the screen, one eyebrow raised, you say, βCan I run something by you real quick?β
βSure,β he replies, tone calm. βWhatβs up?β
You hesitate. Usually, maybe you wouldnβt even ask. But itβs Sam, and you trust him. βHow would youβ¦ rate me, on a scale from one to ten?β
βWhat?β
βLike, hypotheticallyβ¦ letβs say you walk into a bar and Iβm sitting there. Whatβs your first impression of me?β
Sam, who doesnβt even like bars, has already been dragged into two bar hypotheticals today, and itβs barely ten in the morning. He resists the urge to sigh. βJustβ¦ talk to Dean,β he says. βTrust me.β
βHow did you know Iββ
βReally good intuition,β he interrupts.
You stare down at the table, lips pouting. βItβs justβ¦ He flirts with everyone, literally everyone β even the old lady at the market. He justβ¦ never flirts with me. So I try to be casual. But this morning... it sort of got out before I could stop myself, and I called him handsome. And he, uh β I donβt think he liked that.β
Sam lets out a quiet snort.Β
βWhat?β
βNothing,β he mutters quickly, eyes darting back to the computer. βJustβ¦ maybe ask him to grab a coffee sometime. Keep it casual. Start small, you know?"
You hum thoughtfully, weighing the advice. βYeahβ¦ maybe I could do that.β
Sam smiles faintly, satisfied, and goes back to typing. He can survive this, probably.Β
β
Dean is sweet.
Okay, maybe he doesnβt flirt with you. Not the way he does with everyone else.
But if youβre being even a little logical, you know he cares. A lot.
He worries about you no matter what youβre dealing with: hunt injuries, a headache, a papercut, a sneeze. One fragile little βachooβ and heβs glancing over all concerned.Β
And he pays attention.
You mention things offhand like your favorite snacks, a brand of tea you like, or that one candle scent you can never find... and the next time he comes back from the store, theyβre sitting on the table like they magically appeared.
He never says it was him.
Probably thinks itβs nothing.
But it isnβt nothing. Not to you.
And sure, old Joanne at the market gets called βsweetheart,β and you donβt. But Dean has never bought her chocolate before.
β¦Wait. Has he?
Doesnβt matter.
Because the point is: youβre going to follow Samβs advice and ask him out for coffee.
Even if he doesnβt like you back, Dean is sweet, and he deserves good coffee.
And youβre brave enough to offer it.
With this thought in mind, you walk into the kitchen the next morning.
Sam is already blending something green. You hover in the doorway until he finally shows mercy and switches it off because you really donβt want the sound of zucchini being pulverized to mark the beginning of whatever is about to happen.
Only then do you cross the room and sit down right across from Dean, who still hasnβt noticed youβre there.
Heβs cradling his coffee, eyelids heavy, hair sticking up in five different directions. But the moment you enter his line of sight, he nearly jumps. His back goes straight, and he immediately smooths a hand over his hair, one stubborn piece still popping right back up.
God, heβs adorable.
βMorninβ,β he says softly, still half-asleep, voice rough like gravel, and your brain justβ¦ fries. Completely.Β
Not a thought up there for a good minute.
You had a speech planned, had summoned enough courage for it, and now there's justβ¦ nothing.Β
Soon enough, Deanβs hands are on the table, pushing him to his feet. βAll right, Iβmmaβhead to the store,β he says, nodding vaguely toward the door.
Sure. Go flirt with Joanne, you think. Bet she likes that a lot.Β
But then he turns those big, hopeful eyes on you. βWanna come?β
βWhat?"Β
βYesterday,β he adds quickly, βyou said you wanted to goβ¦β
Your chest melts a little. You only said that to Sam, and Dean⦠still paid attention.
You manage to smile. βYeah. Iβll come.β
Dean smiles back before he tries to cover it up with a half-suppressed nod. βCool. Yeah. Uhβletβs go then.β
He nearly walks into the doorframe on the way out.
β
βJoanne, looking incredible this morning,β Dean practically whistles at the older lady at the counter the second you step through the door.
βRight back at you, gorgeous,β she beams.
Of course sheβs beaming. Youβd beam too if he said you looked incredible.
Then she leans in conspiratorially, glancing around like sheβs sharing state secrets. βPlaced an order for that pie you like. Should be here tomorrow.β
Dean grins. βSweetheart, you sure you wanna keep your husband? Competitionβs fierceβ¦ just sayinβ.β
You glare at the mismatched floor tiles and make your way toward the fridge aisle, while Joanne giggles behind the counter. Again, who can blame her?Β
Then they start talking in hushed tones, leaning in toward each other. Youβre pretty sure theyβre talking about you because of the way she keeps sneaking glances your way. You strain to hear while pretending to examine the products, but youβre too far away to catch a word. By the time you edge closer, the conversation cuts off, and Dean doesnβt even glance in your direction.
When you finally reach the till, Joanne leans in and whispers, βDarling, you gotta snatch that before itβs too late.β
She nods toward Dean, whoβs hovering near the snack aisle. βI mean, look at him,β she adds, shaking her head with exaggerated approval. Your eyes follow hers, taking in everything from head to toe. βSeriously. If he looked at me the way he looks at you, I wouldnβt just stand there doing nothing.β
βThe way he looks at me?β you echo, because apparently thatβs the only sentence your brain can manage.
Joanne stares at you. βSweetheartβ¦ are your eyes just for decoration?β
βWhat?"Β
Before she can say anything else, Dean returns with a bag of chips and puts it down gently on the conveyor belt. βGot the ones you like,β he murmurs, not quite meeting your eyes.
Aww, he's so cute.Β
You glance at Dean.
Then at the chips.
Then back at Joanne, who lifts her eyebrows in a βsee what I mean?β kind of way.
Okay.
Yeah.
You do have to snatch that before itβs too late.
β
The way he looks at you.
Youβve been chewing on that the whole ride back, trying to decode what the hell Joanne meant.
Sure, Dean glances at you, checks if youβre okay, keeps track of you the way he keeps track of Sam, Cas, his car, everything he cares about. Thatβs justβ¦ Dean. Nothing special about it.
Right?
βWhat were you and Joanne talkinβ about?β he asks suddenly, low and careful. His eyes flick over to you, then right back to the road. βWhatβd she say?β
He sounds almostβ¦ worried.Β
βUh, nothing,β you lie, light as possible. βShe might have a crush on you, though.β
That gets a small smile out of him, soft and relieved. Then he glances again. βThat's all she said?β
βWhy?β
He shrugs one shoulder, eyes fixed ahead. βJustβ¦ wonderinβ.β
You do not bring up her actual comments, because dying from embarrassment in this car is not on your bucket list. βWhat about you?β you ask, as casual as possible. βWhat were you two whispering about?β
βUhβ¦ she, uhβ¦ has this niece she wanted me to meet.β
βOh.β It falls out of you flat and tiny.
βYeah,β he adds, rubbing the back of his neck. βShe thought I might be interested.β
βReally?β
βIβm not,β he says immediately, too immediately. βInterested, I mean. But Joanne kinda figured that out right away,β Dean finishes. βSo itβs all good.β
The old lady wasnβt joking. Someone less insecure is going to snatch him up one of these days, and youβre going to regret all this waiting around doing nothing.
But the question is, how are you supposed to live in the bunker with him if you go all in on your feelings and he doesnβt feel the same? Thatβs just a recipe for disaster.
But then againβ¦ The way he looks at you.Β
You make it your personal project to figure out just what the hell that means.Β
Truthfully, it doesn't even take long to gather hints, one after the other.Β
He does look at you, more than youβd realized. Not the teasing, smirking kind of glance he gives literally everyone else. Not even the playful, flirty looks. No, this is different. His eyes linger, soft, careful, like heβs making sure youβre okay, or memorizing something only he can see.
And maybe youβre reading too much into it. Maybe. But every time he flusters when you tease him, or he scratches the back of his neck when you hand him a simple compliment, your brain takes notes. You start keeping a mental tally, just to make sure youβre not imagining things.
Youβre also pretty sure youβve seen him blush around you a couple of times. Enough to make your heart skip.
Dean Winchester, master of casual charm and reckless confidence, getsβ¦ flustered. Around you. And itβs the smallest, most perfect kind of proof.
After weeks of quietly gathering evidence and comparing notes with Sam, Cas, and even Jack, your case feels airtight. And with it comes a little surge of courage.
And then, out of nowhere, you stumble onto the final piece.
The big one.
You werenβt even supposed to be in the bunker.
You were meant to be at Charlieβs for the weekend: movies, junk food, girl talk, a detox from the job, and the crises that come with it. But she comes down with a brutal flu and refuses to get you sick, so the whole plan gets pushed back.
You were going to text the boys and let them know you were still home, but you never got the chance.Β
Because the second the front door slams, you hear Deanβs voice echo down the metal stairs: βThatβs just stupid,β he grumbles. βIβm not doinβ that. I donβt even know if she likes me.β
You freeze mid-step.
Samβs answer comes fast, like heβs run out of patience for the year. βDean. Be serious. Are your eyes just for decoration?β
Sam and Joanne could be good friends, you think. Theyβre both full-time members of the Dean Appreciation Squad anyway.
Dean huffs loudly. βShe lives here, Sam. What if youβre wrong? I donβt wanna make her uncomfortable.β His voice dips, softer, almost guilty. βGod knows I probably already do.β
Your heart drops.
He actually thinks he might be making you uncomfortable.
Dean Winchester.
A man who apologizes when you bump into him.
A man who brings you your favorite snacks without a word.
A man who looks at you with care and devotion.
He thinks any of that is unwelcome.
You press back against the wall, breath catching in your throat, because the truth finally lands and it's undeniable.Β
He likes you.
Really likes you.
And heβs holding himself back because heβs afraid his feelings might somehow upset you.
...Well.
Youβre going to have to show him exactly how wrong he is.
β
You stroll into the garage one slow morning, no hunts, no plans β just a little time to make yourself feelβ¦ well, you. No flannel. No worn-out boots. Today, something that hugs your curves just right, a touch of makeup to bring out your best features. You even had time to make your hair cooperate.
Deanβs under the car, elbow-deep in something greasy, when you lean against the wall, arms crossed casually.
βWhatcha doinβ, handsome?β you murmur, voice soft but teasing.
Metal clangs to the floor. βSon of aββ He scrambles out from under the car, rag in hand, eyes widening as they travel up and down you, and he almost freezes. βYouβ¦ uhβ¦ you going out?β
βThat depends,β you say, tilting your head. βAre you busy?β
βHuh? Me?β Dean stammers. βWhy? Youβ¦ you need a ride somewhere?β
"No, not really. Wanted to take you out.β
For a moment, he just blinks. The words donβt seem to register. βTake me out?β
βA date,β you say, trying to keep your voice steady, though inside youβre practically combusting.Β
βA date,β he repeats slowly. βYouβ¦ and me?β
βYeah. If you want to.β
A faint blush spreads across his cheeks, just enough to reveal his heart.Β "For real?"
"Yeah," you nod. "Do you want to?"
βGod, yes,β he says, voice almost too fast. βIβ¦ uhβ¦ Iβmma go change, real quick.β
Before you can even react, heβs already rushing to the garage door, as if he hesitates another second, you might change your mind. He pauses, hand on the handle, then spins back with a quick glance. βI donβt think I mentioned it, but you look... amazing. Justβ¦β He shoots you an approving look, the kind that makes your chest tighten, before finally ducking out.Β
β
Sam should really get out of the bunker more, maybe get an actual hobby that isnβt research or running laps before breakfast. Most importantly, he should probably spend less time around you and his brother before his last functioning brain cells decide to mutiny.
Actually⦠scratch that.
It might already be too late.
He did start looking at local classes: pottery, pilates, and even a book club. But he never registered for any of them. And now? Now he deeply regrets it.
Because the poor man walks into the kitchen, thinking only about making a smoothie, and instead walks intoβ
Yeah.
That.
There you are.
There Dean is.
And youβre kissing him like youβre both about to start something Sam definitely doesnβt want to picture.
Right in front of the blender.
And - oh no - your fingers slip beneath the waistband of Deanβs jeans, and his breath itches. And then he's all like, βOh baby, if you keep this up, Iβm gonna put you right on this counter andββ
Sam slams his ears shut and salutes the blender for its bravery. Then he bolts from the room, muttering something about bleach and possibly moving to another state.
The next day, the blender is quietly relocated to the war room, where it can recover from trauma in peace, and Sam doesn't venture back into the kitchen for at least two weeks.Β
And youβ¦ Well, youβll owe Sam a proper thank-you someday... Once he can glance at the two of you without immediately questioning every decision that has brought him here.

βDean?β You question, knocking once before pushing his door open. He glances up from his bed, cell phone pressed to his ear as he listens to someone on the other end.
His mouth drops open when he notices that all youβre wearing is one of his shirts; long, bare legs on full display and a look on your face that makes his cock twitch.
βYeah.. Iβm gonna have to call you backβ¦β He doesnβt take his eyes off you, or wait for the other person to answer, before heβs snapping the phone shut and dropping it onto his nightstand.
βShitβ¦β He mutters, sitting up straighter against the wall.
You step into his room fully, shutting, and locking, the door behind you.
βWhen did you get back?β He asks as you pad across the room. βAbout an hour ago.β You say simply, climbing over his legs to straddle him. His eyes follow every movement you make, anticipation rising in his chest. Your hair is still wet from your shower, skin soft from the lotion youβd slathered on just before coming to see him. He runs his hands up your legs, stopping at your hips as he fingers the hem of the familiar fabric.
You lean down to kiss him softly, teasing. βI missed you.β You pull away enough to see his face tilted up towards you. Heβs never looked prettier than when heβs under you, looking up at you through long eyelashes like youβve hung the stars. You could ask him to do anything, and heβd do it. Happily.
He smiles, βI missed you too.β Then he catches your lips in another kiss that lasts longer than the one before.
He grunts into your mouth when you grind down against his jeans, hands slipping fully under his shirt, to grip your bare sides in a hurried attempt at getting you closer to him.
βFuck- no underwear?β He groans.
You giggle, pulling away to undo each of the buttons on his shirt still hiding him from you. βDonβt laugh at me.β He pouts, letting you pull his arms out of his sleeves. βIβve been deprived of this for an entire week.β When you move to take his shirt off of your body, his hands stop you. βNo.β He breaths out, βLeave it on.β
βSo needyβ¦β You pout back, leaving his shirt in its place to run your hands over his chest as you press another kiss to his lips. Your hands undo his belt buckle, and you manage to get his jeans unzipped before youβre looking at him expectantly for help.
βLooks like Iβm not the only needy one.β He grins, but lifts his hips to slip off his pants, anyway. You rest your arms over his shoulders to keep him sitting up and away from the wall, and sit back down on his lap, leaving a wet spot on the only fabric left separating you from him. βYouβre soaking, sweetheart.β
Your retort gets caught in your throat as he runs a finger through your slick folds, a breathy laugh escaping your lips instead. You watch as he lifts his finger to his mouth to taste you, still trying to find your words.
Finally, with a deep inhale you manage to echo his sentiment back to him. βA week is a long time.β and then youβre pulling his mouth to yours in an increasingly desperate kiss.
His hands are on your hips again, letting you rub against him until he can barely stand it, and heβs gripping you in place. βIβm gonna cum before Iβm even inside you if you keep this up.β His voice is deep, and hoarse in a way that settles itself into your core.
βShit, De.β You lift yourself up long enough for him to pull off his underwear, reaching down to line him up with your entrance.
The stretch as you sink down has you struggling to keep quiet. βItβs okay, baby. You can be as loud as you want.β He coos into your ear.
His hands wander as you start to move up and down, cupping your tits from under his shirt in a way that makes the whole thing feel even more scandalous. Youβre suddenly aware of the cool metal from his rings brushing against your skin, peaking your nipples, and itβs driving you insane.
One of your hands is scratching red lines into his back, the other is tangled in his hair. Both are keeping his chest pressed against yours as you moan into his mouth.
βThatβs it.β He praises, gripping your ass to help you keep riding him as he starts to thrust in tandem with your movements. Him bottoming out only makes you louder. βLook at that pretty cunt riding me so well.β
βGod, Dean, I missed your mouth.β You whine, kissing him between words, unable to get enough, but also not wanting him to stop saying filthy words.
βYeah? What else?β
You canβt help but smile at his faux attitude - youβd missed that too. But you loved praising him as much as you loved taking it.
You cup his chin with one hand, leaving the other splayed across his back, as you bring your mouth to his ear.
βI missed your hands on my body, and I missed these eyes looking at me.β You trace a finger down the side of his face, βBut I especially missed your cock fucking me.β
βJesus Christ.β He groans as he fucks you through his high, until your legs are shaking and you can barely keep your hands steady on his shoulders.
But heβs not satisfied.
He maneuvers you, a heavily breathing mess, onto your back. Itβs only now that he lifts his shirt over your head, tossing it onto the floor.
βMy turn to take care of you.β He whispers against your skin, kissing across your collarbone as his hand drifts down to your clit.
He rubs lazy circles with his thumb, before pushing two fingers into your pussy. Your hips buck up to meet his hand, and his mouth finds the curve of your tit, sucking hard in a way that will surely leave a mark. βOh godβ¦β You whimper, closing your eyes to get lost in his touch.
In any other situation, he wouldβve quipped back something like, βNot quite!β, with a shit eating grin on his face, earning himself an eye roll from you, but in this sacred moment, he wouldnβt dare do anything that would take you out of it.
His fingers pick up their pace, and your nails find his back again. βIβm close-β Your back arches off the bed as Dean shifts so he can watch your face. βI know, honey. Can feel it. Come for me, baby.β He presses harder circles over your clit, fingers curling until they find the spot on your walls that has you seeing stars and coming hard again.
βRight there, huh?β He doesnβt stop until youβve come down, a blissed-out beauty lying on his bed. He presses one more kiss to your lips, matching the smile on your face from where heβs propped himself up on his elbow.
βI should wear that shirt more often.β You smirk, earning a laugh from Dean. βIβd fuck you in anything.β He says, a wicked grin on his face, βBut the shirt was a nice touch.β
Itβs your turn to laugh as he lays down next to you, pulling you into his arms. You wrap one arm around his back, and feel the raised skin marking where your nails had been.
βSorry about your back.β You sheepishly mumble against his chest, and he snorts. βAre you kidding? I loved it.β
You hum in acknowledgment. βGood to know.β
A few minutes of silence passes in his arms, and then, βIβm glad youβre home safe.β He says softly, pressing a kiss to your head.

βRight, well, this isnβt creepy at all,β Dean declared, rolling Baby to a stop before switching into park.Β
You both sat quietly as you surveyed the desolate building, a feeling of unease washing over you.Β
βMaybe we should wait for Sam,β you suggested half heartedly. He was only down at the Sheriffβs station, and it wouldnβt even take ten minutes for him to meet you here, but you knew Dean wouldnβt wait.Β
βNo,β he said, confirming what you already knew. βSomeone else is missing and this is our best lead so far. If you donβt want to go in, that's fine, but I am.βΒ
βIβm not letting you go in there alone,β you snapped, sitting up as tall as you could despite the pit forming in your stomach.Β
βAwe, you worried about me, sweetheart?β Dean teased, turning to look at you with a grin; one that was effectively wiped from his face when he saw the look in your eyes. βHey, what is it?βΒ
βI donβt know,β you said honestly, shrugging lightly. βI just have a bad feeling about this.βΒ
βBad feeling like what?β he questioned, his brows knitting together.Β
You thought about it, trying to pinpoint what it was you felt, but you couldnβt. βJustβ¦. donβt go wandering off,β you ended up saying- begging, more like.Β
βAlright,β he agreed easily. βWe stick together, and weβll be in and out before you know it.βΒ
βRight,β you confirmed with a nod. βLetβs gear up.βΒ
You exited the car as quietly as you could, making your way around to the back as Dean unlocked the trunk and propped up the panel to the arsenal.
βYou and Sam better be right about this,β he muttered, digging out the box of witch-killing bullets.Β
Your mind raced through the details of the case: An exsanguinated priest, a dead nun with her tongue ripped out, the president of the high schools abstinence club found without a heart, and various livestock missing various body parts - if this wasnβt a witch, you were a little scared to find out what else it could be.Β
βWe have to be,β you breathed out, loading your ammo.Β
βCan you do me a favour and sound at least a little confident?β he asked playfully, lightly nudging your arm with his own before tucking his gun into his jeans.Β
βSorry,β you said sheepishly, holstering your own gun.Β
βItβs alright,β he said earnestly, handing you your favourite knife (one that used to be his before you claimed it as your own). βIβm just not used to seeing you so spooked.βΒ
You couldnβt help but chuckle quietly as you took the knife from him. βIβm not used to feeling spooked.βΒ
βWeβll make it through,β he consoled, closing up the trunk. βJust like we always do.βΒ
βJust like we always do,β you echoed with a nod, following him towards the building.Β
The overgrowth brushed your calves as you made your way up the walk, and after a quick survey of the facade, Dean swung the door open after picking the lock.Β
βWait!β you hissed, stopping him before he entered. βSam does know weβre here, right?βΒ
You watched as his shoulders shrugged before stepping inside. βProbably.βΒ
βThatβsβ¦ comforting,β you sighed, following him across the threshold.Β
The two of you did a quick preliminary sweep of the main level before making your way to the top floor, finding nothing of significance in any of the rooms. Making your way back down, you both stopped dead in your tracks as you heard a clatter come from beneath you.Β
βOf course thereβs a basement,β Dean whispered. βWhy wouldnβt the creepy ass witch be in the creepy ass basement of this creepy ass house?βΒ
βHow do you know sheβs a creepy ass witch?β you teased, raising an eyebrow at him. βMaybe sheβs hot. Or a guy. Or both.βΒ
He faltered over his response, considering your words for a moment. βIβll bet whatever tab you drink up at the bar once we end up ganking this bitch. Sheβs creepy.βΒ
βDeal,β you grinned, wiggling your eyebrows at him.Β
You both chuckled, before another noise from the basement drew your attention back to the case at hand. Dean awkwardly cleared his throat before leading the way in search of the basement entrance, using the occasional noise as guidance.Β
βGod, I hate witches,β he muttered to himself, slapping away cobwebs as he descended the stairs.Β
βI donβt think the witch put those webs there,β you said with a snicker.Β
βNo, theyβre just the one turning this rotting corpse of a house into a lair of evil and despair,β he hissed.Β
You rolled your eyes in response, unable to stop the fond smile from creeping onto your face as you made it to the bottom of the stairs.Β
A muffled cry caught your attention, and Dean spared you a quick look before running in the direction it came from, you hot on his heels. Coming up on a corner, he slowed to a halt and peered around the wall.Β
βIt looks clear,β he decided after a moment. βJust be careful,β he added, continuing on his way.Β
Upon turning the corner, you were enveloped in the warm glow of candles, which would have been nice, had it not been for the rest of the scene. An altar lay at the far wall, burning candelabras stood in each corner of the room, and the very person you were searching for was bound and gagged in a chair in the middle of the room, surrounded by a circle of candles.Β
Dean cursed and muttered under his breath, surveying the room. βIβll get him, you get the altar.β
βOkay,β you agreed, running across the room. Once you reached the altar, you couldnβt help but stare in shock and disgust for a moment as you took in the sight; all the missing body parts seemingly staring back at you from where they lay soaked in blood. It took Dean shouting your name from across the room to bring you back to your senses, and you quickly upturned the altar as Dean instructed the now freed man to get out as fast as possible and wait by the car. As soon as the contents of the altar were scattered, an ear piercing shriek came from behind you.Β
Quickly whirling on your heels, you were greeted by a cloaked figure, who seemingly came out of nowhere.Β
βWhat have you done?β she screamed, dropping her hood as she stared daggers into you.Β
βOh, Iβm sorry,β you feigned innocence. βDid I ruin your big plan?β
βYou ruined everything!β she shrieked, slowly approaching you. βYouβll pay for this!βΒ
βYeah, I donβt think so,β Dean called out from behind her.Β
βDo you have any idea how long Iβve waited for this?! How many centuries passed by until the circumstances were right? I had it! I had it all! I was one spell away from seeing my love again!β she continued to scream, advancing further towards you as she ignored Dean.
βBack off, Grunhilda!β Dean roared from behind her, drawing his gun.Β
βNo!β she shrieked, barely lifting her hand in order to easily swing his gun away - and stop you from drawing your own. βYou stupid little gnat. You think you can just come in here and mess with things you donβt understand? You think you can take this from me?!βΒ
Her shouting was drowned out by the sound of your own heart pounding in your ears, your entire body feeling like it was on fire as your throat constricted, the air leaving your lungs and not returning. You felt your bones cracking beneath your skin as your feet left the floor, and you shared a look of terror with Dean before black began to cloud the edges of your vision.Β
Without an effective weapon handy, Dean rushed the witch and tackled her to the floor, sending you crashing down. You met the concrete with a thud, and it knocked the rest of your senses out of you. You laid there for who knows how long, fighting off the waves of pain and nausea, willing yourself to move as you listened to the struggle happening a few feet away from you.Β
By the time you managed to prop yourself up, Dean was pinned down as she advanced on him, and you desperately looked around for either of your guns.Β
βDo you have any idea what itβs like?β you heard her ask, menace laced deep in her words. βTo want something so desperately, to feel that desire within your very soul?!βΒ
Dean struggled against her hold as you struggled to pick yourself up, to at least crawl to a weapon if you had to.
βWell you will,β she sneered, cackling to herself. βYouβll know how it feels. To have what you want the very most to be so close to you, to have it at the edge of your fingertips, only to never be able to grasp it! For it to be the only thing you can think about!β
βShut the hell up,β Dean seethed through clenched teeth, glaring at her.Β
She only stepped closer towards him, cackling to herself. βYour strongest yearning, hidden deep in your heart, will nevermore be yours to part. Be it with sun or with rain, that which brings joy wonβt be without pain.βΒ
βYou finished yet?β Dean interrupted, before he had the wind knocked out of him, rendering him silent.Β
Moving as quickly as you could without being noticed, you closed in on Deanβs pistol while the witch carried on.Β
βWhatever you crave you cannot say, yet youβll seek it out be it night or day,β she continued, hovering over him. βConsider yourself lucky, you useless toad. Iβve had countless lifetimes yearning to see my love again, and Iβll spend lifetimes more. At least you only have this one measly little life to yearn for what you want.βΒ
Grasping the gun in your hands, you carefully rose to your feet and steadied yourself to take aim. βMan, you really do talk too much,β you huffed out.
The shot rang out just as she turned towards you, though it was silenced by a roaring wind that accompanied a bright blue light. Within seconds, everything was calm and quiet again.
Fighting every urge you had to collapse back onto the floor, you trudged your way over to Dean in an attempt to help him up.Β
βGod, I told you sheβd be creepy,β he gasped out, groaning as he stood.Β
βYou want a prize?β you asked incredulously, staring up at him.Β
βI wanna get the hell out of here,β he said, ushering you to take leave. βThen I want those drinks you owe me.βΒ
After what felt like another entire day, you and Dean had dropped the victim off at the hospital, patched each other up, cleaned out the basement, showered, and filled Sam in on everything that went down.Β
βSoβ¦ she cursed you?β Sam asked curiously, trying to understand.Β
βI dunno. She tried to, I guess,β Dean replied nonchalantly. βBut [Y/N/N] put a bullet in her. No witch, no curse, right?βΒ
Sam shared a brief look with you, before turning back to Dean. βYeah, butβ¦ there was no body.βΒ
βWhat?β Dean asked gruffly.Β
βThe witch,β you said. βI shot, but she vanished. What if she isnβt dead?βΒ
βWell, I feel normal, so Iβm gonna say sheβs dead,β Dean declared with a shrug. βNow, can we head to the bar? Iβm in desperate need of a drinkβ¦ or twelve.βΒ
Without waiting for an answer, he quickly stood and donned his jacket before looking back at you and Sam. βYou guys coming or what?βΒ
βOh, do I have a choice to not go?β you asked playfully.
βYou can stay if you want, but your wallet comes with me,β he replied, smiling innocently.Β
βAlright, letβs go,β you said with a dramatic sigh, grabbing your own jacket.Β
Not long after, the three of you were sliding into a booth in the nearest dive, enjoying the lack of people; you guys seriously needed to decompress.Β
βAlright, Iβll be back,β you declared, hopping out of the booth to get the first round of drinks.Β
βMake sure you get a tab started!β Dean jokingly called after you.Β
You flipped him off in response, taking a seat at the bar after placing your order. While you waited, Sam watched as Dean grew more restless in his seat.Β
βDude, what the hell is your problem?β he finally asked, eyeing Dean as he fidgeted anxiously.Β
βWhat?β Dean asked cluelessly, glancing around the bar. βIβm thirsty. Sheβs been gone for what, like, half an hour?βΒ
βItβsβ¦ barely been two minutes, Dean,β Sam informed him with an amused grin.Β Β
βYeah, well. I want my beer,β Dean mumbled, tapping his fingers on the table as he glanced around once more. βIβm gonna go see if she needs help.β
Before Sam could even reply, Dean was already halfway across the bar, meeting you just as you got your final drink.Β
βNeed a hand?β Dean asked cheerfully, his sudden appearance making you jump. βSorry,β he added with a snicker.Β
βDick,β you muttered with a laugh, hopping down from the stool. βHere you go,β you added, handing him his beer.
βAwesome,β he beamed, taking the bottle from your outstretched hand.Β
He followed closely as you made your way back to the table, handing Sam his drink before sliding into the booth; Dean followed suit, leaving you nestled in between him and the wall.Β
The three of you had a few more rounds before Dean slipped away, determined to teach a lesson to the arrogant ass harassing players around the pool tables - just because you didnβt need to hustle people anymore didnβt mean it wasnβt still fun every now and then. You watched him fondly, laughing quietly to yourself as you watched him fumble around with his cue before making a terrible break. Harder than it looks, you could just hear him say.Β
Your attention was turned back to Sam when he cleared his throat, and you were met with his questioning gaze. βDoes he seem weird to you?βΒ
βWeird how?β you asked, face scrunched in confusion.Β
βI donβt know, strange,β he replied with a small shrug. βLike- like antsy or something.βΒ
Your eyes flit back across the room to Dean, who was very much in his element as he upped his ante, before focusing on Sam again. βI havenβt noticed anything, Sammy.βΒ
He sighed in resignation, seeming to already know that would be your response. βItβs probably nothing, just forget I said anything,β he replied, shaking his head dismissively before finishing his drink.Β
βIf you say so,β you muttered quietly, sipping your drink as you cast a worried gaze across the bar, getting lost in thought.
By the time you each finished another round of drinks, Dean made his way back over to the table; much to the surprise of you and Sam.Β
βDone so soon?β Sam questioned, raising an eyebrow at his brother.Β
βYeah,β Dean shrugged, sliding back into the seat beside you.
βBut you only played one round,β you said quizzically.Β
βSo?β Dean wondered, gulping down the rest of his beer.Β
βSo, you usually play a lot more than that,β Sam pitched in, shifting his gaze between you and Dean.Β
Dean sighed, his bottle clanging on the table as he set it back down. βWhy am I getting the third degree here? I played a game, he learned his lesson, I got over it. End of story.β
βOkay, grouchy,β you snickered, ruffling his hair a little just because you knew he hated it. Except he really did love it when it was you doing it.
βWhatever, anyone want another round?β he asked with a huff, lightly swatting your hand away.Β
βNo, Iβm gonna call it a night,β you admitted, shifting to slip your jacket back on.Β
βYeah, me too,β Sam declared, starting to stand from the table.Β
Dean stood as well, assumingly just to let you out. βAlright, letβs go.β
You and Sam both stilled in your movements at his response, sharing a shocked look with each other. βYouβreβ¦ coming with us?βΒ
βWhy wouldnβt I?β he asked with a scoff, shrugging his jacket on as he looked questioningly between you and Sam. βSeriously, what the hell is wrong with you guys?β
βWe just didnβt expect you to call it a night so early,β Sam explained helplessly. βGettinβ old, huh?β he added, trying to lighten the mood a little.Β
βYeah, I mean, you barely even wracked up a tab!β you declared with a laugh, before grinning mischievously. βDrinks just donβt agree with you anymore, do they, old man?β
Dean scoffed and rolled his eyes, fixing his collar just to busy his hands. βOkay, alright, one more wisecrack and Iβm leaving you both here.βΒ
Despite the finality in his tone, the amusement dancing in his eyes gave him away - as did the hand he extended to you to help you slide from the booth.Β
βWhatever you say, grandpa,β Sam teased, patting Dean on the shoulder before walking away with laughter in his wake. βIβll be outside!β
You chuckled in response, and the stern look Dean gave you only made you laugh even more. βYeah, yeah. Hurry it up, chuckles,β he chided, wiggling his fingers at you. He surveyed the bar as you finally took hold of his hand, sliding out from your seat with ease and standing before him. βReady?β he asked, gaze turning back to look down at you.Β
βYeah, I just gotta go pay,β you replied, nodding your head in the direction of the bar counter.Β
βAlright,β he said with a nod. He gave your hand a squeeze, though instead of letting go like he normally would, he held it firmly as he led the way across the bar.Β
You followed along quietly, trying your hardest to not read too much into it. Though when you stood before the bar and he had yet to release your hand, you gave him a puzzled look. βDid you wanna go get the car?β you asked hesitantly.Β
He looked confused for a moment, as if he wasnβt entirely sure what was going on either, before he cleared his throat with a curt nod. βYeah. Yeah, Iβll meet you out there. Donβt take too long,β he rushed, giving your hand another fleeting squeeze before shuffling away.Β
Strange, you thought briefly, before shifting your attention to the bartender before you.Β
As you paid the tab, Dean settled into the driver's seat of Baby, and Sam watched him impatiently drum his fingers against the wheel as he hummed along to whatever song was in his head; and he couldnβt help but snort a laugh as Dean checked his watch one, two, three times since getting into the car.Β
βYouβre ridiculous,β Sam chided with a laugh, shaking his head.Β
βWhat?β Dean inquired, annoyance clear in his voice.Β
βDude, please tell me you see whatβs going on,β Sam pleaded.Β
Dean widened his eyes in confusion, glancing around the near empty parking lot before looking back at his brother. βWhatβs going on?βΒ
Before Sam could reply, their attention was caught by the opening of the barβs door when you emerged from the building, a grin forming on your face as you caught sight of them waiting in the car.Β
Dean matched your grin, quickly reaching for the door handle and scrambling outside. βThere she is!β he greeted happily, opening the back door for you.Β
βFucking idiot,β Sam muttered to himself, staring out the window with an amused grin as you and Dean settled into your seats.Β
The three of you made it back in no time, and, having to settle for a single bed when first getting to town over driving for another who-knows-how-long just to find another motel, shuffled out of the car and into your shared room with heavy feet.
βFinally,β Dean muttered with relief, shutting the door behind him as Sam took a seat. βWhoa, whoa,β Dean barked, holding up a hand. βWhatβre you doing?βΒ
Sam froze just as he sat on the bed, staring up at his brother. βWhat?βΒ
βThatβs my bed,β Dean declared with a huff.Β
βNo, itβs not,β Sam answered with a scoff. βItβs your turn for the couch.βΒ
βDude, Iβm not sleeping on the pull-out!β Dean declared with finality.
βWhat, are you kidding me?β Sam asked incredulously. βYou got the bed last time!βΒ
βYeah, and I just got ragdolled by a crazy ass witch, I deserve a mattress!β Dean argued, stepping towards the bed. βGet up.βΒ
βNo,β Sam argued stubbornly, relaxing further atop the sheets.Β
βYou guys are ridiculous,β you said with an exasperated sigh, walking across the room. βIβll take the couch.βΒ
βNot a chance,β Dean denied, not even sparing you a glance.Β
βWhat, why?β you asked in confusion.Β
βFirst of all, Iβm not sharing with Sam,β Dean replied, turning to look at you. βSecond, you got it worse than I did. Iβm not shoving you on a pull-out.βΒ
βOh, please-β you started to argue, before he cut you off.Β
βI patched you up myself, [Y/N]. Donβt bother trying to lie to me,β he cautioned.Β
You opened your mouth to argue once more, but the look on his face stopped you short. βWhatever,β you mumbled, turning towards the bathroom. βIβm getting ready for bed. Figure this out before I get back so I can actually go to bed, please.βΒ
The bickering resumed as you quickly retreated, shutting the bathroom door on Deanβs disgruntled declaration of βbest two out of three.β
By the time you re-entered the room, you were met with silence. Surveying the surroundings, you found Sam digging through his toiletries bag while sitting in his original spot on the bed. Your gaze snapped over to the couch, where Dean sat looking like a kicked puppy.Β
βYou went with scissors again, didnβt you?β you asked, raising an eyebrow at him.Β
He met your gaze as Sam snickered behind you, causing his face to sour even more. βShut up,β he mumbled before standing, bristling past you with slumped shoulders.Β
You chuckled quietly to yourself and grabbed the spare sheets, quickly making up the pull-out for Dean while he got ready; hopefully heβd be a little less cranky about it all if this was at least already done.Β
Once finished, you made your way over to the bed and curled up under the covers. After saying a quick goodnight to Sam, you were asleep before Dean even left the bathroom.Β
Fear gnawed at Dean, his body frozen in place as a cold spread through him, panic clinging to him like ice. He tried to call out to you, but all that left him was a strangled breath as his lungs seized up. He watched as the waves carried you away, further and further from where he stood. By the time his legs finally moved to carry him closer to shore, his feet were so heavy it was as though he was wading through quicksand.Β
βNo, no, no,β he pleaded quietly, watching as the waters edge never grew near no matter how far he ran.Β
Your voice cried out to him, surging him forward even faster as you drifted ever outwards, terror seeping deeper into his bones with every futile step he took.
He couldnβt reach you.Β
He couldnβt save you.Β
The realisation that you were gone caused his world to come crashing down around him as he fell to his knees. A roaring filled his ears, and he didnβt know whether it was the irascible water that held you captive or the blood racing from his pounding heart.Β
As he stayed there - watching the crashing waves for any sign of you, listening for a call of his name, unwilling to move for fear heβd miss you - the water suddenly crept up around him, as if to mock him.Β
The sky darkened as he let out an anguished cry, his voice blending in with the storm beginning to brew around him. Yet despite the deafening howls, he heard it clear as day: your voice, calling out to him.Β Β
βDean.β
The world stilled around him once more, your voice ringing out in a whisper as gentle as the wind.Β
βDean.βΒ
He stood, frantically searching the horizon for you. He tried to call out, yet his voice still never came.Β
βDean!β you called out, voice booming like thunder from above.Β
A small hand gripped his own, pulling him so forcefully he was yanked off his feet. He let out a startled cry, a spark of lightning igniting so brightly before him that he screwed his eyes shut.Β
βGod dammit, Dean!βΒ
Another force shook him, and when we reopened his eyes, he was met with the suspiciously stained ceiling of the motel room. He bolted upright, heart hammering against his chest as he looked around. He caught your worried gaze as he wiped the sweat from his brow, trying to steady his breathing as you leaned in closer.Β
β[Y/N?]β he gasped out, pushing himself further upright.
His hand reached out automatically, fingers tentatively brushing against your cheek as if to evaluate your solidity. When he was satisfied that you wouldnβt evaporate, he surged forward to wrap you in a desperate embrace; the icy grip of terror finally starting to melt.Β
βIt was just a nightmare, De,β you soothed quietly, tracing a hand along his back. βEverythingβs alright.β
βYeah,β he said tightly, swallowing the lump forming in his throat as he let you go. βYeah, itβs fine. Iβm alright, get back to bed.βΒ
βYouβre okay?β you questioned, concern laced in both your face and tone of voice.Β
βIβm okay,β he affirmed with a nod, casting his gaze aside so you wouldnβt see the panic still swirling within him.Β
βOkay,β you said softly, placing a gentle kiss upon the crown of his head before standing from the edge of the pull-out.Β
Dean got up after you to grab a glass of water, his heart jumping in his chest as he remembered the sight of you being ripped away by the current.Β
βJust a nightmare,β he reminded himself under his breath. βJust a nightmare.βΒ
Not having slept another wink after his nightmare, Dean was unsurprisingly the first one up the next morning. Taking it upon himself to get breakfast for the three of you, he found himself at the nearest diner waiting for his order.Β
Drumming his fingers impatiently on the sticky linoleum counter, a burning desire to call you began to build within him.Β Knowing you were likely still sleeping, he decided to busy himself with a stupid game you downloaded on his phone.Β
Yet the urge to reach out to you grew tenfold as he sat there, a sinking feeling that it might mean you were in danger starting to take hold of him. Just as his mind began to swirl with questions of what the hell was going on with him, he heard your voice calling his name.Β
His head snapped up, expecting to see you sliding onto the stool beside him, ready to give you hell for walking here in search of him all by yourself in a random town. He figured you mustβve known he was here, and it wouldnβt have been a far walk from the motel, but it was still stupid.
Though the words died on his tongue as he realized you werenβt there, and that familiar feeling of dread trickled through him after scanning the diner and not finding you anywhere.Β
Another voice called out, this time the waitress, announcing that his order was ready. He met her smiling face with nothing but confusion, her smile faltering for a moment.
βEverything alright?β she asked hesitantly.
βHuh?β he asked, before snapping out of his daze. βOh, yeah. Just a little too early for me. Thanks-β he paused, squinting to read her name tag. βThanks, Edna,β he charmed, flashing his signature grin as he gathered the order.Β
βAnytime, sugar,β she charmed, her smile perking back up as she sent him a wink.Β
With one last - albeit awkward - grin sent her way, Dean quickly left the diner; already feeling lighter for knowing heβd be back at the motel soon. His grin only grew when he glanced across the street and caught a glimpse of you staring back at him, proving that he wasnβt crazy and you really did come to meet him.Β
He took a step forward, intending to call out to you, when a truck drove by and blocked you from sight. The grin was wiped from his face and the coffee tray nearly slipped out of his hand when he noticed you had completely disappeared in its wake.Β
Fearing the worst once more, he scrambled into the car and quickly called you, firing Baby to life as the line rang.Β
βHey,β you answered with a stifled yawn. βPlease tell me youβre getting breakfast. And coffee.βΒ
βYeah, I-β he faltered in his response, having to let out a breath of relief as he realized you were safe and sound. βIβll be back in a few, you and Sammy still there?βΒ
βWhere else would we be?β you asked with a giggle.Β
While the sound would normally bring a smile to his face, your words only caused a frown to appear. βYou only waking up now?βΒ
βDonβt judge me,β you teased. βItβs onlyβ¦ ten after seven, I barely slept in.βΒ
βJust not used to being up before you,β he lied, knuckles turning white as he gripped the steering wheel.Β
βMiracles really do happen,β you joked with a laugh. βYou sound weird, is everything okay?β you added, worry tinting your voice.Β
βHm?β he wondered, not processing your question right away. βOh, no- yeah, I-... just didnβt get much sleep.β
βRight,β you said, teetering on the edge of believing him or not.Β
βReally, Iβm good,β he assured, sensing your apprehension. βI just gotta catch some zβs and Iβll be good as new.βΒ
βOkay. Iβll see you in a few then,β you relented. βDrive safe,β you added as an afterthought before hanging up.Β Β Β
The line went dead as he stopped at a red light, his stomach churning as he stared at his reflection in the rearview.
βJust need some sleep,β he assured himself.Β
βDude, would you quit it with the pacing?β Sam snapped, setting his book down on the table for sheer lack of concentration.Β
Dean stopped just long enough to stare daggers at his brother before marching down the library once more. βSheβs been gone too long.βΒ
βSheβs been gone an hour,β Sam informed, hands running over his face in exasperation.Β
βExactly,β Dean replied, pointing a finger at Sam in acknowledgment. βSomething mustβve happened.βΒ
βDude, sheβs at the grocery store. With Jack. What the hell could possibly happen?βΒ
βI donβt know!β Dean exclaimed, arms flailing as he whirled to face Sam. βSomething mustβve! She hasnβt answered my last text and itβs been-β he paused, pulling out his phone to brandish the screen. βSeven minutes!βΒ
βOh, my god,β Sam groaned, tossing his head back to stare at the ceiling. βI canβt deal with this anymore.βΒ
βWhat are you talking about? Arenβt you worried?β Dean asked gruffly.Β
βNo, Dean, Iβm not worried! Thereβs no reason to be worried!β Sam proclaimed.Β
βNo reason? She could be dead!β Dean barked, his face taking on an expression of disbelief.Β
Sam sighed as he leaned over the table, raising his eyebrows. βOkay, let me ask you this: why, exactly, do you think sheβs dead?βΒ
βOh, come on, Sam!β Dean grumbled. βWe donβt exactly live cookie cutter lives here, you know. One minute sheβs returning the shopping cart, and the next sheβs got a damn knife in her back!βΒ
βDean,β Sam soothed. βYou know as well as I do thatβs a load of crap.βΒ
βNo,β Dean argued, shaking his head. βWe donβt know that. We donβt know anything, you know why?βΒ
Before Sam could even respond, Dean waved his phone around before dropping it on the table. βBecause she wonβt answer her damn phone!βΒ
βOkay, this is actually ridiculous,β Sam declared. βHow can you seriously not see whatβs been happening to you?βΒ
βKnock it off, Sam,β Dean muttered, waving a hand dismissively as he began pacing again. βIβm fucking fine.βΒ
βYouβre fine,β Sam repeated incredulously. βYouβre frigginβ cursed, Dean!βΒ
βIβm not cursed!β shouted Dean. βWould you quit it with that crap?βΒ
βRight, because nothingβs been going on with you lately, right?βΒ
βRight!β Dean agreed with a huff.Β
βYou havenβt been, say, I donβt knowβ¦. not sleeping? Feeling stir crazy? Getting paranoid?β
βSam-βΒ
βNo, Iβm serious, Dean! How can you not see this?βΒ
βBecause Iβm fine!β Dean argued, stalling his movements to gather his phone from the table.
After a few moments of silence, Dean rolled his eyes and found himself once more walking the length of the library. βOkay, maybe Iβve been feeling a little weird lately, but Iβve just been tired - and you know what? I survived worse. So yeah, Iβm fine!βΒ
βRight,β Sam said sceptically.Β βAnd have youβ¦ noticed when it is that you feelβ¦ weird?β
βI donβt know!β Dean announced frustratedly.
βDean,β Sam chastised.Β
βWhat?βΒ
βYouβve been feeling like this all week, and itβs only getting worse. Youβve been like this since that witch cursed you - and donβt say she didnβt. Use your fucking head, Dean! Youβre cursed!βΒ
Deanβs jaw clenched as he tried to remain calm, taking a moment to formulate his response. βYouβre insane,β he finally declared.Β
βI think youβre the insane one,β Sam contested. βYou were cursed to yearn for something, Dean. Only in this caseβ¦ itβs someone.βΒ
βWhat the hell are you talking about?βΒ
βCβmon, Dean!β Sam pleaded with a laugh. βThe only time you get like this is when youβre more than ten feet away from [Y/N].βΒ
βYou donβt know what youβre talking about,β Dean muttered dismissively.Β
βYouβve checked your phone another five times since you picked it up.βΒ
βSo?β Dean questioned, failing to resist the urge to check it once more. βIβm worried, not cursed.βΒ
βYouβre worried because youβre cursed!β Sam argued.Β
βIβm worried because I lo-β Dean quickly fell silent as the words died on his tongue, his brain firing into total overdrive as he laughed nervously. βI care, thatβs why Iβm worried.βΒ
Sam stared at his brother in total disbelief, trying to find a way to make him realize what was going on- or, most likely, acknowledge what was going on.Β
Yet before the conversation could go any further, the bunker door screeched open and the sound of your laughter fleeted down to greet Dean, effectively turning his scowl into an affectionate grin.Β
βHope you remembered my pie!β he called out, marching to meet you at the foot of the stairs without so much as a glance back in Samβs direction.Β
βWhen have I ever forgotten?β you asked, feigning offence as you held out the bag which contained his pie.
βWell,β he started, taking the bag from you. βThere was that time in Redford-β
βHey!β you interrupted with a laugh. βI didnβt forget, they were out!β
βSee, I still donβt believe you,β he teased, heading for the kitchen.Β
βBelieve whatever you want, Dean,β you replied playfully.Β
βIβm still waiting for it, you know. You should get me two next time,β he joked, though he was partly serious.Β
βDean?β Samβs voice tentatively called out.
βYeah?β Dean replied hotly, keeping his back to Sam as he went to grab a beer from the fridge.Β
βWho, uhβ¦ who the hell are you talking to?β he asked carefully, surveying the empty kitchen.Β
βHilarious, Sam,β he said dryly, shutting the fridge. βIβm talking to-β
His mouth ran dry as he turned around, being met with just his brother, who was staring with concern from the doorway.Β
β[Y/N],β Dean finished weakly.Β
βHer and Jack arenβt back yet, Dean,β Sam said carefully, as though talking to a lost child.Β
βYes, they are. They got back, she gave me my pie, we came in here,β Dean said fiercely, his confidence shattering when he went to gesture at the pie he set down moments earlier and found it to be gone.Β Β
βMaybe you should sit down,β Sam suggested, not knowing what to do.Β
βIβm fine!β Dean shouted, hovering over the counter. βIβm fine,β he repeated, moreso to himself than anything.Β
βOkay, look, how about I try calling [Y/N], okay?β Sam offered, hesitantly walking further into the kitchen. βSee when theyβll be back.βΒ
βThey are back!β Dean barked, glaring at Sam. βShe was just in here!βΒ
Sam didnβt know what to say, the fear and concern for his brother crashing down on him.Β
βShe was just in here,β Dean repeated shakily, meeting Samβs gaze with confusion.Β
βDean,β Sam started to say, before the familiar tone of your ringtone came from Deanβs phone, cutting through the air like a knife.Β
Dean pulled the phone from his pocket, clearing his throat before answering. βYeah?βΒ
βDean, thank god,β you cheered, sighing in relief. βListen, we came out to a flat tire and I donβt have a spare because I forgot to fucking replace it and there are too many people around for Jack to, you know, try fixing it,β you rambled anxiously. βCan you please come help?βΒ
βYouβre still at the store?β Dean clarified, looking up at Sam with frightened eyes.Β
βYeah, weβre stuck in the parking lot,β you told him breezily.Β
βOkay,β he said, swallowing thickly. βAlright, Iβll be right there.βΒ
βThanks, De!β you said happily, ending the call.Β
Dean stood there for a few moments staring down at his unopened bottle of beer on the counter, trying to gather his thoughts, before finally lifting his gaze to Sam.
βIβll, uhβ¦. Iβll be back,β he told him, not waiting for a response before trudging out of the kitchen.
You found yourself yet again rushing down the hall to Deanβs room, his muffled yells waking you in the dead of night once more.Β
He uttered your name as you shut the door behind you, and though it took you by surprise the very first time it happened - nearly two weeks ago, now - it was something youβve almost come to expect. It was killing you, watching him go through this every night and not being able to fix it. You would sit with him, find ways to gently rouse him from his terror filled slumber and comfort him when he woke, but it never seemed like enough; he deserved more.
At first you didnβt think there was too much going on, figuring his shift in behaviour was just due to his lack of sleep. You didnβt believe Sam when he talked to you about it; Dean may have been acting a little more strange than usual, but it didnβt raise any red flags.
It wasnβt until the morning following your conversation that you noticed it, cluing in and realising how different Dean had been; how long heβd been different. The excess text messages, the increase in phone calls, the insistence on you not going anywhere without him and his exuberant reactions to you getting back safe when you did go somewhere without him, his constant questioning on where you were or where youβve just been. Something else was going on, and you could only think it really did come down to the witch you two encountered.Β So you and Sam called up Rowena, getting her take on the situation and figuring out what to do.Β
Her words now echoed through your head as you perched yourself on the edge of his bed: βMagic isnβt simple. Some curses are anchored by the witch, ending whenever they were to die. But others are more complex, rooted not in the witch but the object of the curse itself, not breaking until their purpose is carried out one way or another. Perhaps if you can figure out what it is Dean needs, you can break the curse yourselves. If this carries on for any longerβ¦ Iβm worried it will kill him.βΒ
While you ran your fingers through his hair, you decided right then and there that once he woke up, you wouldnβt leave without confronting him about it. You knew it would likely start a fight, and you felt a little guilty knowing you would all but interrogate him right after having another nightmare, but all that guilt flew right out the window the second Dean startled himself awake, the sight of his panic stricken face as he gasped for air nearly bringing you to tears; youβve seen him like this too often as of late.Β
βItβs alright, Dean,β you soothed, reaching out to him. βIβm right here, everythingβs fine.βΒ
His gaze snapped to you, unable to hide the confusion and terror still coursing through him despite the relief he felt. β[Y/N]?βΒ
βYeah, De,β you cooed, running a hand across his shoulder blades. βWeβre in your room, everyoneβs okay.βΒ
He let out a shuddering breath, hanging his head in his hands. βYouβre okay,β he whispered softly. βYouβre okay.βΒ
You sat quietly with him for a few more minutes, patiently comforting him as best as you could while you thought of how to approach this conversation.Β
Clearing his throat, Dean was the first to speak again as he rose from the bed. βSorry I woke you again.βΒ
The dejection and shame laced in his voice tore your heart to bits, and you had to put up a good fight to keep your emotions in check. βYou donβt need to apologize.βΒ
βYeah, I do,β he disagreed, trudging to his sink in the corner.Β
βDean, please talk to me,β you pleaded, watching as he turned on the water.Β
You fell silent, waiting for him to deny you and brush you off again. You waited for him to say something, to do something, but all he did was stare at the running water.Β
βDean?β you asked cautiously, slowly getting up from the bed yourself.Β
βI canβt save you,β he muttered quietly, his gaze on the faucet unyielding.Β
βWhat?β you asked curiously, not knowing what he meant.Β
βI can never save you,β he carried on. βYou always justβ¦ slip away from me. Every time. Itβs always the same.βΒ
βWhatβs always the same?β you questioned, moving closer towards him.Β
βI try,β he muttered, seemingly oblivious to your presence. βI run, and I fight, and I try, but I can never reach you. I can never get to you.β
He seemed to snap out of his daze a little, moving to splash water over his face before turning off the tap. βYou keep dying. I keep watching you die. I canβt watch you die again, [Y/N]. I canβt.βΒ
βThis is what your nightmares have been?β you wondered.Β
He fell silent again for a minute before meeting your gaze in the mirror. βYeah.βΒ
βItβs not real, Dean,β you told him softly.
βItβs real enough for me,β he muttered, turning to face you.Β
βAnd is this why youβve beenβ¦ acting differently towards me?β you asked hesitantly.Β
He averted his gaze, hanging his head as he considered your question. βI guess,β he said with a shrug. βMaybe, yeah. I donβt know.βΒ
βDean,β you scolded with a sigh, plopping back down on the bed. βWhy wonβt you just tell me whatβs going on?βΒ
βBecause everythingβs fine!β he argued once again.Β
βIβm not stupid, Dean!β you challenged. βI know you. I can see something's eating you alive and itβs fucking killing me to witness it. So please, tell me what the hell is going on.βΒ
βItβs just nightmares,β he lied, crossing his arms against his chest.Β
βItβs more than nightmares!β you cried. βYouβre withering away into nothing, Dean! I mean letβs face it! Youβre practically a zombie nowadays with how little sleep you get, youβve been acting like a puppy with separation anxiety, and letβs not forget how completely erratic youβve been.β
He glared at you, jaw clenching as he decided whether or not to entertain this conversation. βOkay, so maybe I havenβt slept lately,β he admitted starkly. βBut like I keep saying, Iβm fine.βΒ
βDonβt you ever get tired of lying?β you sneered, glaring up at him.Β
He rolled his eyes, averting his gaze to anywhere else as he shook his head. βNo, but Iβm getting tired of having this conversation all the time.βΒ
βWell too bad!β you yelled, abruptly standing from the bed. βCause Iβm tired of never having this conversation go anywhere! Iβm tired of you brushing off the idea of you being cursed. I didnβt believe it at first either, but what the hell else could it be, Dean?βΒ
βOh, come on!β he barked, running a hand over his face. βI see Sam got his hooks into you.βΒ
βYeah, he did. And you need to listen to us.βΒ
βNo, I really donβt,β he scoffed, starting to head to the door.Β
βEven if it kills you?β you blurted out.Β
βItβs not gonna kill me!βΒ
βGod, look at you, Dean! It already is!β you argued, marching closer to him. βHow would you feel if the situation were reversed?βΒ
He let out a sigh, pausing with his hand on the doorknob before turning back to you. βWhat?βΒ
βWhat if it were me going through all this instead of you? Would you let me get away with not even listening to you and Sam?βΒ
He narrowed his eyes at you, staring at you in silence for so long you expected him to turn away again. Instead, he let out a deep breath as he took a seat, gesturing for you to carry on. βFive minutes.βΒ
You almost went to argue before you thought better of it, knowing full well that if Dean never came around to the theory he would actually cut you off at the five minute mark. So, you did your best to recount the entire situation for him, reiterating what you, Sam, and Rowena had to say about it all in the hopes of getting through to him. By the time you finished, you knew it was well over five minutes, so you took Dean not interrupting you to be a good sign.Β
βOkay,β he finally said with a small nod. βWell, I listened. Can I go now?βΒ
Your heart dropped to your stomach, anger and fear bubbling inside of you as you exploded. βGod, you are unbelievable!β
βWell what do you want me to say?β he grumbled. βI just donβt believe thatβs whatβs going on.βΒ
βHow can you not believe it?β you asked incredulously. βItβs obvious!βΒ
βLook, I said I donβt believe it, alright?β Dean snapped. βWhy are you so hellbent on making this into some big fight? Just accept it.βΒ
βNo!β you seethed. βI canβt just accept the fact that this could kill you. Especially not when thereβs a way we could end this.βΒ
βNo,β he disagreed, shaking his head. βYou canβt fix this, [Y/N/N]. You just canβt.βΒ
βI can!β you cried. βJust tell me.βΒ
βTell you what?βΒ
βYou know what,β you scolded.Β
βThis is so fucking ridiculous.βΒ
βTell me anyway.βΒ
βWhy the hell do you care so much?β he questioned exasperatedly.Β
βBecause Iβm fucking terrified, Dean!β you exclaimed. βIβve watched you grow more restless and anxious every day since the night we finished that case. Iβve seen the life drain from you more and more as sleep became nearly impossible for you. And I know itβs nearly impossible for you, because I have spent the last eleven nights sitting on that bed as you got terrorised by your own mind. I donβt care if you believe in this curse or not, Dean, because I do.βΒ
Dean stood quietly, absorbing what you said as the severity of the situation began to dawn on him.Β
βI mean donβt you get it?β you asked sadly, cutting through the silence. βIf something happens to you, if I lose youβ¦ thatβs not something I can come back from.βΒ
Dean fell silent once more, running a hand through his hair as he took a deep breath, pacing around the room a little as he turned everything over in his head.Β
βIβm scared, Dean,β you reiterated softly. βPlease, just let us try to fix this.βΒ
βThereβs some things I should tell you, then,β he admitted quietly after a moment of silence, taking a seat on the bed.Β
βAbout whatβs been happening?β you asked hopefully.Β
He nodded, staring down at his hands folded in his lap. βYeah.βΒ
βOkay,β you said, moving his desk chair to take a seat. βIβm listening.βΒ
He took a bracing breath, taking a few minutes to build the courage to speak. βWell, you know Iβve been having nightmares.βΒ
βI do,β you agreed quietly.Β
βItβs always the same one,β he admitted, keeping his gaze cast downwards. βI could never figure out why. It didn't make sense to me why it was always the same thing. So I finally talked to Sam about it, and he had a pretty good theory. But, you know me. I didnβt want to believe it because it came back down to that witch and this stupid fucking curse.βΒ
He let out a bitter laugh, pausing long enough for you to speak up. βWhat did he have to say about it?βΒ
βI tried telling myself I was fine,β he continued, ignoring your question. βI was fine, at first. At first it was just not sleeping wellβ¦ but then other things started happening.βΒ
βOther things like what?β you wondered quietly.Β
βLike my blood feeling like itβs on fucking fire,β he muttered, wiping at his face. βAnd my skin feeling like it-β¦ like itβs being peeled off my goddamn bones, and my face feeling like itβs meltingβ¦ and how I get this- this bubble inside my chest that feels like itβs either gonna burst or suffocate me and how it all only happens-β he stopped in his rambling, taking a deep breath before chuckling in disbelief. βGod, it only happens when youβre not around, [Y/N].βΒ
βI-... what do you mean?β you asked breathlessly.Β
βOh, come on, [Y/N],β he said bitterly. βI know youβve noticed. I text you more, Iβm almost always calling you. I just- I get thisβ¦ this unwavering panic inside me when youβre not around. I keep-... I swear to god I see you everywhere when youβre gone. I catch sight of you across the street, I smell your stupid shampoo when Iβm alone, I hear your voice when no oneβs there. I had an entire conversation with you and you werenβt even there,β he carried on, shaking his head as he briskly wiped away an angry tear. βGod, Iβm going fucking crazy,β he added with a manic chuckle.Β
βYouβre not crazy, Dean,β you said gently.Β
βThat night,β he started, staring at the wall across from him. βShe was trying to get back someone she lostβ¦ someone she loved.βΒ
βRight,β you agreed.Β
βThey used to drown them, people they accused of being witches,β he continued slowly.Β
βYeah, it was pretty common. Sink, and you were innocent. Float, and you were guilty,β you pitched in. βButβ¦ what does that have to do with this?β
βI think they were innocent,β he said simply. βWhoever she lostβ¦ I think thatβs how she lost them.βΒ
βWhy do you think that?β you asked curiously.Β
Dean cleared his throat, staring pensively at his hands once more. βThe nightmares. Itβs alwaysβ¦ you always drown. I keep-... I can never save you.βΒ
βI donβt get-β you started to say, before he cut you off.Β
βItβs how she lost who she loves, [Y/N],β he said curtly. βIt makes sense for me to see the one I love go the same way.βΒ
βI-... what?β you asked, too stunned to think of anything else to say.Β
βThe dreams, the hallucinations, the- the way Iβve been feelingβ¦ I didnβt want to admit it, I still donβt, but I canβtβ¦ I mean I can only ignore it for so long, right?β he said, scoffing quietly. βEspecially with you and Sam breathing down my neck about it.βΒ
βIgnore what, Dean?β you asked breathlessly, your heart hammering in your chest.Β
βYou,β he muttered. βThey way I feel about you. The way Iβve always felt about you.βΒ
You didnβt dare respond, his words ringing in your ears as he fell silent, each of you lost in your own thoughts for a while.Β
βIβve always known that I love you, [Y/N/N],β he carried on, slowly meeting your gaze with glistening eyes. βBut thisβ¦ this curse, this whatever it is. God, itβs just made it all so much worse, and I knew. I knew it was you that my entire being was screaming out for but I couldnβtβ¦ I couldnβt admit it.βΒ
βWhy not?β you asked shakily, feeling your tears starting to build.Β
βHow could I put that on you?β he asked, a few rogue tears slipping down his face. βYou said it yourself, this thing is killing me. Itβs gonna kill me, unless I get what I want, and given that thatβs you, Iβm calling it game over.βΒ
βNo, Dean, itβs not,β you denied with a sniffle, cutting through your own stray tears. βYou shouldβve told me.βΒ
βYeah, well,β he grumbled, shrugging lightly as he looked back at his hands. βI told you now.βΒ
βDean,β you sighed, wiping your face as you stood from your seat. βDo you trust me?β you asked, walking towards him.
βOf course I do,β he said quickly, almost offended by the question.Β
βOkay, well, Iβll need you to trust me on this,β you replied, stopping just in front of where he sat.Β
βOkay,β he said with a huff.Β
βYou gotta look at me, though,β you said, laughing softly.Β
Sighing dejectedly, he slowly lifted his head to meet your gaze, a ghost of a smile dancing on his lips as he looked at you.Β
You smiled softly at him, gently taking his face in your hands before wordlessly bringing your lips down to meet his. At first, neither of you really knew what was happening, and just when you thought to pull away you felt his lips moving against your own. His hands gripped your waist to hold you in place a moment longer before you each pulled away, staring silently at each other as you processed what just happened.Β
βWhat, uhβ¦ what was that for?β Dean finally asked.Β
βWell, it was either that or slapping some sense into you,β you said playfully. βWhich I almost think you still deserve, because I canβt believe you honestly think I donβt love you back.βΒ
βWhat?β he asked, his grip on your waist loosening in shock before tightening once more.Β
βYouβve had me since the day we met, Dean,β you told him softly, carding your fingers through his hair.Β
βYou actuallyβ¦β he trailed off quietly, trying to focus his thoughts. βYou actually love me, of all people?βΒ
βYeah,β you said quietly. βI do.βΒ
βSo I- well, I guess I couldβve saved a lot of trouble if I really did just tell you, huh?β he asked jokingly, laughing tightly.Β
βIβll give you hell for it tomorrow,β you teased, half serious. βFor now, how about we try getting you back to sleep?βΒ
βActually,β he said, eyes sparkling with mischief. βI have a better idea involving this bed.βΒ
You couldnβt help but snort a laugh, grinning fondly at him. βOh, really?βΒ
He grinned back, laughing with you before taking on a more sombre tone. βDo you trust me?βΒ
βAlways,β you said honestly.Β
βGood,β he replied with a grin, laughing heartily at the shriek you let out when he tossed you on the bed.Β
He stared down at you, a look youβve never seen before painted on his face. βWhat?β you asked, giggling nervously.
βI love you,β he said earnestly, brushing a lock of hair away from your face.Β
βI love you, too,β you replied shyly, grinning softly.Β
He matched your grin, drinking you in a moment longer before crashing his lips upon yours once more.Β
When Dean woke the next morning, it didnβt take long for a grin to spread across his face as he quickly realized two things.Β
The first thing being that you, the love of his life, still remained tangled up in both his arms and the sheets, sleeping peacefully atop his chest.Β
The second being that, for the first time in a total of thirteen days, he was able to sleep without being haunted by his nightmares.Β
He felt you stir, and his grin widened as you nestled in closer, tightening your grip on him as you slept. He planted a kiss against your temple, pulling you in close as he blissfully settled in for another peaceful rest.Β
you come home to dean after a long day, one where you can barely make it through the door, your body dragging along as you pull yourself into the living room.
dean's on the couch, his legs stretched out in front of him, feet propped up on the ottoman. there's an old movie playing on the tv, but you don't pay attention, wordlessly plopping down beside him as you rest your head on his thighs.
you make a small sound, maybe looking for some attention, though you won't admit it. before you can say anything, his palm is resting on your head, warm as he massages your scalp.
"bad day?" he asks softly, sparing you a quick glance before his attention is back on the movie.
in a way, you're both like cats; desperate for closeness, but not wanting to draw any attention to it. dean's not the type to push, though he also knows you wouldnβt react well if he tried.
you're both content resting in comfortable silence.
"just tired," you reply, letting yourself sink deeper into the couch as you close your eyes.
dean makes a sound, something close to an agreement, before shifting his hands to your neck, then your shoulders, working out the tension.
"want a drink?" dean asks softly. he's halfway though his beer, considering grabbing another, but you're too sleepy to sit up and sip at one.
"'m fine," you say softly, curling your legs behind you. "thanks.β
"okay." he goes back to playing with your hair, almost absent-mindedly. there's a funny scene onβyou don't catch what's happening, but dean makes a half-hearted snort of amusement. "let me know if you change your mind."
you hum in return, already falling asleep to the soft sounds of the television and dean's fingers in your hair. the sun's barely even set, but you're too tired to move.
when you fall asleep, you miss the small smile on dean's face. he still hasn't said i love youβneither of you haveβbut you know it's true. you feel it every moment youβre together.

the back door of the diner groans shut behind you, the sound swallowed by the low hum of the alley. fifteen minutes. thatβs all you get for a break. you lean your head back against the rough brick, the exhaustion from todayβs shift settling deep in your bones. itβs late, the air carrying a damp chill that promises rain.
thatβs when you hear it. a soft pitiful whine, barely there, from behind the overflowing dumpster. you slowly push off the wall, curiosity getting the better of you, and peer into the shadows. there, curled into a tight, shivering ball is a puppy. heβs so small, his fur matted with grime and something that looks suspiciously like dried blood. one of his ears is torn, and he flinches when you get closer, his big, sad green eyes tracking your every move. thereβs no collar, no sign of where he came from. he just looks lost.
your heart does a stupid little flip. youβre not supposed to have pets in your apartment. your shift is far from over. but leaving him out here? no. not a chance in hell.
βhey, little guy,β you murmur, holding out a hand. he whimpers, but doesnβt move away. slowly, you gently scoop him up. heβs lighter than you expected, all bones and trembling. he smells awful, but you tuck him into your jacket anyway, zipping it up just enough to hide him.
the rest of your shift is a blur of quiet paranoia. you sneak the little thing bits of bacon when your boss isnβt looking and make sure his head is tucked away from sight. he doesnβt make a peep, as if he knows he needs to be a secret.
when you finally get to lock up, you hold him close on the walk home, the warmth of his small body a comfort against yours.
your apartment is small, but itβs warm and inviting. you run a shallow bath, the water a perfect temperature, and gently lower him in. he whines in protest at first, but as you carefully wash away the layers of filth that go down the shower drain, he starts to relax under your touch, his little body going limp. you find a few scrapes and a nasty cut on his paw, but nothing that a little antiseptic and some gentle cleaning canβt handle.
wrapped in your softest towel, he finally looks like a puppy. a very tired, very scarred-up little puppy. you donβt have any dog food, so you share your own late-night dinner with him, which he devours in seconds.
exhaustion hits you like a tidal wave. you crawl into bed, and he follows, hesitantly at first, before circling three times and collapsing against your side with a heavy sigh. you fall asleep to the soft rhythm of his breathing.
the next morning, sunlight is streaming through your window, and something feels⦠different. the weight beside you is heavier, warmer. you roll over, your vision blurry with sleep, and your breath catches in your throat.
thereβs a man in your bed. where the puppy once laid.
heβs on his stomach, face turned away from you, his bare back a canvas of old, silvery scars that crisscross over toned muscle. a thick arm is thrown over the pillow, and as he shifts, you see the soft curve of his stomach. heβs beautiful, in a rugged, broken sort of way. and heβs completely naked.
panic claws its way up your throat, but then he stirs, letting out a low, sleepy groan that is impossibly familiar. he rolls onto his back, and you finally see his face. stubble dusts his jaw, his lips are soft but plump, and thereβs a smattering of freckles across his nose.
and on his ear, the one peeking out from a mess of brown hair, is a small, healing tear.
the puppy is gone. and in his place is a man who opens the most startlingly green eyes you have ever seen.
he blinks at you, a confused frown creasing his brow. βmorninβ,β he rasps, his voice thick with sleep.
you can only stare, your mind racing, connecting the dots that shouldnβt exist. the scars, the small cut on his ear, the way he slept so trustingly by your side.
he pushes himself up on his elbows, the sheet pooling around his waist. βuhβ¦ where am i?β he looks around, then his eyes land back on you, a flicker of recognition in their depths. βwaitβ¦ i know you.β
you finally find your voice, but itβs just a whisper. β..whoβ¦ are you?β
he gives you a small, lopsided smile, a hint of the charming rogue underneath the confusion.
