Kim Phi foods is located in the industrial part of Lierenfeld, in a place where you would have no other reason to go to. But trust us when we say, it's worth it. This is the secret you want to keep but here we are, sharing it for you to enjoy. On Saturday, get your vietnamese groceries at the front and your lunch fix at the back at their amazing test kitchen. Traditional Pho soup, banh mi sandwiches, the best spring rolls in the world, frappes, desserts.. Oh, the delight. A personal favourite of ours is always vietnamese iced coffee so make sure to get one.

When you travel to somewhere foreign, it often happens that your taste buds crave the flavours that you experienced out there when you are back in the homeland. For us, our trips to Japan and Korea are the ones who have influenced our daily meals the most. Onigiri, sushi, gyoza, karrage, ramen, takoyaki, bibimbap, kimbap, kimchi... you name it, we love it. Even though there are wonderful restaurants in Little Tokyo, sometimes we just like to stay in and cook ourselves some, what we consider to be, comfort food. 

When it comes to our shopping, we usually do it at Shochiku. It's clean, it's stocked and the prices are good. Some of our staples include sushi rice, seasoned Korean seaweed, various condiments, tofu, and kimchi. For a quick lunch, they make the best sushi on the go, super fresh and not too pricey. 8 nigiris for 8.50!

Update 2016: Toykio is now What’s pizza. 

Toykio is the first cool place that we stumbled upon in Düsseldorf, and it still is one of our go-to cafés. It's hard to get a decent coffee in this part of Germany but luckily you can count on Toykio for a good flat white. They offer a range of cakes, macarons and a couple of lunch options like bagel sandwiches. The space doubles as a gallery and carries loads of japanese toys and art books. You can find it on the main street of "Little Tokyo", just a few doors down from What's beef, the burger joint run by the same people.

Muji, if you don't already know it, is a Japanese store selling everything from dining-ware to clothes. Their concept is simple; unbranded, clean & useful. We have loads of their stuff at our place because they fit in so well with everything. And trust me when I say; Muji is stationery heaven.

Their Düsseldorf branch is located on the famous Königsallee, the luxury shopping street of the city. Don't be fooled, Muji is actually quite affordable.

What's beef is a new burger joint located on the main street of the "little Tokyo" neighbourhood and a good one at that. Seeing as we're both from North America, we know what a good burger is and this, my friends, is the German version of it. Classic toppings tucked away in a nice glazed bun.

They have a selection of nice side salads, including a homemade coleslaw and a very typical German "Gurken salat", i.e. cucumber salad. We went for some crispy onion rings and sweet potato fries but hey, if you're on a healthy streak you can get some roasted veggies instead. The milkshake is a serious treat.

The meat is local, delivered everyday directly from the Lower Rhine. They use quality products from the surrounding countryside and encourage local sustainability. 

It was quiet when we went in the late afternoon but this place can be very busy at peak hours.

Located in the Carlstadt, near the old town of Düsseldorf, lies the Carlsplatz market, a nice collection of farmers, kiosks and food stalls. It's been around, on and off, since 1804. Nowadays you can enjoy some fresh produce right there in the shopping area of the city. From fresh made Flammkuchen to macarons, there is lots of options to grab a bite while supporting local businesses.
