"I taught elementary school in South East, so there were still a lot of active gangs and criminal activity at the time. It was hard to see the kids basically neglected. The idea that nobody cares about these kids and nobody really expects them to succeed hurts. They are as beautiful as any kids anywhere. Some memories still stick with me. We did a lot of things with our hands, like building kites. So, to see these kids fly something that they'd built for the first time was incredible. It's great when you would find something that a kid was talented at, like figuring out that one is a good writer. But, frankly, the best is when years later you get reconnected with some and find out that they are still alive. I mentored one young student and after all these years I am still in contact. Just to know that they've made it is powerful. It's kind of a mixed tale, because I hope most of them made it, got to college, and found good jobs, but I know that a lot of them didn't. When I left the profession I was physically and emotionally exhausted. We are almost like athletes. You know that expression, to leave it all on the field? Teachers do that everyday. I have so much respect for teachers who manage to have long careers. I still do volunteer work in South East, maybe I'll go back to teaching someday."
