“It is not often that we receive visitors,” words spoken were truly so sweetly and pleasantly (additionally, a half-truth and a half-lie. but she didn’t need to know that, now did she?) that, had it been anyone but he, it would have disgusted him. “For the most part, they do not make the journey.”
What, otherwise, should have affected him in some manner or another only has him poorly stifling an amused smile. Both arms were politely tucked behind him, clutching and wrapping hands neatly at opposite’s wrists as he stared down at her from a raised angle. He’s keeping his head raised-- a behavior seen as both polite “enough” yet disrespectful for the Emperor.
“You are very lucky that it was I that found you and not one of my guards.”
But was she truly as lucky as he was claiming?
The glint within his eyes made it hard to trust him (but was that not what he desired? that little trickle of uncertainty?) but, for the most part, kept the hostility to a minimum
“They would have used such brutality that it would have been downright criminal,” he goes on, the effort to suppress his smile seemingly fading away without a care as lips easily pulled into a long, thin smile. “I simply would be unable to live with myself if justice was inappropriately given--”
“--especially to such a beautiful, young woman like yourself.”
🍗 – our muses have to cook a holiday dinner together
mellifluous humming filled the empty bar, its usual patrons spending time at home with their families for the duration of the winter festivities. it carried far and was given sort of a haunting quality by it echo, the song being continuously thrown back at the cantor and imbued with a life of its own. the voice was euphonious, like melting gold, and it carried a tune that evoked some ancient memories of days gone by. days that were once spent celebrating with his entire village at the rhapsodos manor or carousing late into the night with his compatriots in their company flat.
rather than allowing the ravenous claws of melancholy devour him, the chevalier thanked the goddess that he was blessed with the opportunity to celebrate the holiday with those he loved, those who decided to look beyond his past sins and who guided him towards a path of reconciliation. he thanked Her for his ability to reminisce and to keep the spirits of his past comrades alive in stories and hymns. as the holiday season approached, he reasoned that one of the best ways to express his gratitude was to put together a meal for his ever hospitable hosts.
preparing an epicurean feast was simply a small token of appreciation for the kindness they had bequeathed to him ever since his arrival. unfortunately, he was not the only one with that idea. despite his polite objections and sincere supplications, he found himself joined in the kitchen by a certain brunette. fitting, perhaps, for she was the one who had introduced him to their chosen family in the first place. heroes in their own right, he owed them everything. so did she, in her own way.
weeks before, the pair had compiled a small book filled with their favorite recipes from their respective childhoods, many of which angeal had taken the liberty to commit to memory so as to experiment with them in the future. they bonded by exchanging cooking tips and sharing the recollections that were inevitably tied to each dish, hearty laughter and joyous tears accompanying the latter activity.
on the day of the solstice, the two made haste to get everything ready for the dinner, having gone to the market the day before to purchase raw ingredients for their meal. it was then that the man was caught humming to himself as he diced fresh vegetables and prepared to add them to the bouillon that stewed over an open flame. when asked about it, he explained that the melody helped pass the time and kept him in a euphoric mood. when pressed further, he closed his eyes for a moment before replying:
❝ it’s an old tavern song that we –– ❞
oh surely she’d know who he was referring to by now, he mused. they were inseparable during his time in SOLDIER and still occupied a sizable portion of their conversations, some of it thanks to his own fondness for them and the rest due to her curiosity.
❝ –– would sing after coming back from missions, especially after not having seen each other for some time.
It’s silly, but when i hear it, i feel like they’re here with me. ❞
a bit embarrassed, he hastily returned to tending to the pot that simmered before him. to his delight, the food was almost ready. perhaps the prospect of a delectable meal would keep further questions at bay. for now, at least. he blinked furiously to make the tears that threatened to fall dissipate. at first, he understood them not, for moments ago he believed he was ebullient and filled with holiday spirit.
a few moments of rumination made the situation clear, however.
this was the first holiday he’s experienced since returning to the planet and with it came the bittersweet realization that he was both within and without. alone, yet simultaneously surrounded by loved ones. he knew things could never go back to the way they once were. he could never again hear the sunny laughter his impetuous pupil after telling an ill-timed joke; he could never again see the seemingly cold simper of his silver-haired comrade break into a slight smile just for him. worst of all, he could never again feel the warm embrace of his childhood best friend after wishing him a blessed solstice and a happy new year. even so, he still had much to live for. the world was filled with wonder, much of which he had still left to experience for himself. and he had good company to do experience such beauty with.
after coming to that realization, he excused himself from the meal and went back to toiling in the kitchen, lighting candles to mask the scent of his next creation. before anyone commented on his absence, he emerged with a small clay pot filled to the brim with one of his late mother’s favorite seasonal desserts: sweet rice pudding dappled with sticks of cinnamon and dusted with brown sugar. he gingerly set the delicacy next to the brunette’s plate before taking a seat beside her, hand coming to rest on her shoulder, a familiar sign of their camaraderie. an inviting smile illuminates stern features as he searches for words to convey his gratitude one last time.
❝ happy holidays Marlene. thank you. for everything. ❞
┇ ┈ ✖ ┉ ┇ NOT OFTEN was Vincent one to be easily found. The display of the stars scattered so beautifully across the cosmos that night, however, had him visibly sat upon a roof within the realms of Edge, his cloak billowing behind his person in the cool breeze. So at ease was he; the view feeling much as if it spoke to his very soul, if he even possessed one any longer. Yes - that night, a peace had overtaken him.

idle fingers pick up a glass figurine to examine. he’s here to visit Marlene, and to deliver a package from Tifa. some letters and small gifts, and a few baked treats to remind her of the dinky place they called home. a passing worker removes the object from his hand and returns it to its spot.
with a sigh, he closes his free hand around the care package and waits in silence. until he hears a voice behind him to urge him to turn his head and smile. how Marlene had grown!
‘hey,’ he greets in his simple way, a light smile on his lips. lifting the package, he shrugs with one shoulder. ‘brought these from Tifa,’ he adds, running fingers through his messy blonde hair. it was a constant mess, he could never hope to really tame it down.
“ Look at you— ", her voice is warm and endearing as orbs gaze over the figure of her young friend as she enters the warm light of Aerith's sanctuary. In life, she knew her as a young child, a girl who like many others had lost her family to war. Now, she was a budding young woman. It'd been so long— " You've come so far from the little Marlene I remember. "
