Fort Lauderdale United Falls to DC Power in Mid-Week in our Nation's Capital
Fell in the second half at Audi Field Washington, DC- Fort Lauderdale United traveled to Washington, DC, as they faced the DC Power in a mid-week match-up at Audi Field. While their opening half was a strong performance, they faltered in the second half, dropping the full three points as the Power earned the victory by a final score of three goals to one. Well-worked ball for the opener DC…

DC Power: Rise of the Power Company
I like Black superheroes. There's a lot of nuance, baggage and complication in that sentence, but ultimately I think more and better Black characters in fiction is for the good, and since my preferred medium is comic books I want to see more representation therein.
This does mean that, as more fans of color enter the space some books are going to stop being for me. I'm not closely connected to the Black community so that means some specific things are going to go over my head. Something similar happened years ago when I read Agents of Atlas, which is a Marvel book with an all-Asian cast; at the end of one downtime issue, the characters fought over who got to pay the bill, something I only found out that day was a facet of that culture.
All this to say: some stuff goes over my head. I enjoyed most of this book but some of it won't be for me. My favorite stories were "Company Man" and "Ring of Power", with the others being merely okay. But there were fun moments in all, and my favorite moment came from my least favorite story:
I would be curious to know if there's a specific aspect of the Culture that was mentioned in this book that people would chime in and explain. Is Spades a game Black guys play? My family's game has been Cribbage since I was little.
do you have any suggestions for Jo? I just finished Far Sector and I'm in love, but I don't know what to read from there :(
N.K. Jemisin actually wrote a short epilogue for Far Sector in DC Power 2024 that is definitely worth reading. Jo's also appeared in this year's DC Power: Rise of the Power Company where Cyborg shows her around the Watchtower (and some other stuff happens but no spoilers).
Beyond that though, the only other comic where Jo plays a significant role is Geoffrey Thorne's 2021 run on Green Lantern. It is widely agreed to be pretty bad as a GL story, but Jo is actually one of the stronger parts of that run imo
Jo's also popped up in Jeremy Adams's currently ongoing run, but that one is focused on Hal so she's relegated to being a supporting character like the other Lanterns. She might show up in the secondary Green Lantern Corps book but from what I've seen she'll be part of the ensemble at most, not the main character like she was in Far Sector or Thorne's run.
Beyond that, I think her appearances are mainly cameos and background shots. Jo's only been around since 2020 so she's yet to develop a solid bibliography. The Absolute Universe version of her will be coming out next month though, so it definitely seems like DC hasn't forgotten about her

Mari McCabe in DC Power: Rise of the Power Company (2025) by Zipporah Smith and Kelsey Ramsay
To be a black Hero has so many layers to it that never gets talked about especially when you're not seen as able just as much as your white counterparts. Things like this shouldn't just be confined comics that come out once a year.
Also where are the groups/family of hero's that are black or even black majority. Same goes for non black POCs. Also the idea that Duke knows that if ever did even a "Fraction" of what Jason has, he wouldn't get any bit of grace that Jason has gotten. This isn't to say Bruce is racist but to say that Bruce has given Jason immense grace for his actions despite anything he may have said and done in the past. This is reflected in life too, whites in powers will be harder on the marginalized than whites when the same actions are taken. I do believe he would be harder on Duke especially with him being also being a meta.
duke in power company is so cute he is so gen z realness
everyone add dc power to your pull list right freaking now
