Dawayne D. Butler - What You Need to Know about Alaskan Trees and Plants
Dawayne D. Butler has been working as a deckhand in Alaska for years and he really appreciates the beauty of nature in Alaska.
Sitka spruce is the Alaska’s official state tree. The legislation for this was approved in 1962, after first being suggested by Alaska House Bill Number 325.
Sitka spruce trees grow to as high as 225 feet and up to eight feet in diameter. They can live up to 700 years. A Sitka spruce needle is about one-inch-long, dark green in color, and covers all the branches of the trees. Light orange cones, produced by the trees, are a beloved squirrel food.
Sitka spruce trees are a common material for guitars. The Russians also used the trees to build ships and houses. In World War II, the tree served as a material to build airplanes.
Western hemlocks are shorter and thinner than Sitka spruce trees. They grow to about one hundred feet and are up to four feet in diameter. However, they also live for a long time, up to 500 years. Their leaves are wider compared to spruce leaves. Western hemlock loves to grow in areas where trees once grew in the past.
Muskeg is a volume of dead plants that are decomposing in a soggy area. The plants that have died transform into a soil that is rich in nutrients. Such soils support all kinds of new plants, ranging from marigold to gentian. Several muskeg plants are taller than one foot. The most important muskeg plant is sphagnum moss. These plants can hold up the amount of water that it up to thirty times their weight, which preserves muskegs and helps them thrive, notes Dawayne D Butler.
Dawayne D. Butler - Reasons That Make Alaska Special
Dawayne D. Butler is an experienced fisherman and deckhand who served on more than half a dozen fishing and crabbing vessels. On many occasions, these ships have worked in the Alaskan waters, surrounded by some of the most exquisite locations the planet can offer. The “Last Frontier”, as many like to call it, provides various wonders for those who love Mother Nature. While living and working in the region comes with its own hardships, the positives arguably outweigh the negative aspects.
Alaska’s Sheer Size Is Intimidating
One of the reasons why Alaska is so alluring is its remarkable size. If one would wish to travel through it from north to south, he or she would have to cover a distance of almost 1500 miles. From east to west, the distance would be even more: exactly 2500 miles. It is an extraordinarily large area, and most of it is still unexplored only adding to its already significant allure.
Not a Whole Lot of Roads
There are two ways to travel to Alaska, either by boat or by plane. There are not many roads and even fewer highways. According to data, as much as 70% of the state cannot be accessed through roads.
The Tallest Mountain in America
The highest point in Alaska on Mt. McKinley stands at a ridiculous 20,237 feet, making it the tallest peak in all of North America. As such, it is one of the favorite destinations of climbers who frequent the area all year.
While Dawayne D. Butler rarely had the time to discover this remarkable region on foot, he fully understands why people call it the “Last Frontier”.

Dawayne D. Butler - Being a Team Player
Dawayne D. Butler notes that when your very decisions can lead to tragedies, you have no other choice but to become a team player, and do it fast. Fishing boats are hazardous environments where you have to pay attention to a lot of things, often simultaneously. One bad move and you or somebody else can pay for your negligence with their life.
Being a team player means different things to different people, but mostly it is about swallowing your ego. When you are willing to put your needs aside for the betterment of multiple individuals, you become a team player, and when they do the same thing for you later, you realize that being a team player is good for everybody.
When you did not sleep too well but still help out another deckhand, you make the whole team stronger. And that can be as true in an office, as it is on a fishing boat. Your team can consist of your colleagues, friends or your family members, but the process is ultimately similar. No individual is more important than the team. There can be clear roles with leaders and followers, but individuals can never be more important than the team.
Dawayne D Butler notes that he had to make these sacrifices numerous times during his career, but it almost always worth it. In his opinion, when everybody is willing to do the same thing, a group of people can come together very quickly, to share a bond which could very well last for a lifetime.
