DAVID SANBORN - TAKING OFF
Taking Off is a debut studio album by David Sanborn, released in 1975 on Warner Bros. Records. The album reached number 19 on Billboardâs Jazz Albums chart. The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 4½ stars and stated: âHis debut for Warner Brothers was a major commercial success and helped make him into a major name. The music is fairly commercial but certainly danceable and melodic. Even at that point in time, Sanborn's alto cries were immediately recognizable; the Brecker Brothers, guitarist Steve Khan and Howard Johnson on baritone and tuba are prominent in support.â Sanborn passed away on May 12, 2024, but his debut remains a highly regarded entry in the jazz-funk canon.

David Sanborn â Hideaway (From âLive at Montreux 1984â DVD)
David Sanborn has been a frequent visitor to the Montreux Jazz Festival, either headlining in his own right, as a sideman or as part of nineties âsupergroupâ Legends. This DVD focuses on his second headlining appearance in 1984 when he was touring in support of his âStraight To The Heartâ album, which would see him win the second of his six Grammy Awards to date. The set combines tracks from that album with others from across his career. It features a special guest appearance by Rickie Lee Jones on piano and vocals on the track âAutumn Leavesâ. In 2008 David Sanborn released his 23rd album and his diverse career continues to thrive both on stage and in the studio.
Line-ups 1984: David Sanborn (alto saxophone), Larry Willis (keyboards), Hiram Bullock (guitar), Tom Barney (bass), Buddy Williams (drums) special guest Rickie Lee Jones (piano & vocals).
David Sanborn â Straight to the HeartÂ
Straight to the Heart is a 1984 album by David Sanborn. It was recorded before a live studio audience and had performances of songs recorded on previous David Sanborn albums. The recording won the 1986 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Fusion Performance.
Reception
AllMusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 4 stars and stated:â With bassist Marcus Miller acting as producer and some memorable tunes being performed (most notably âHideawayâ and âStraight to the Heartâ), this is one of altoist David Sanbornâs better R&B-ish recordings. Joined by keyboardist Don Grolnick, guitarist Hiram Bullock, bassist Miller, drummer Buddy Williams and various guest musicians, Sanborn sounds fairly inspired and is in top form.â
