Whenever David tells Jarvis he's a dick, Jarvis always answers David is a moron.Â
It's like a ritual they have, that started after the first real fight. Then they had screamed at eachother, but when Jarvis said David was a moron, David had started laughing and the tension between them had vanished, like someone had hit a light switch.Â
And since then, whenever they repeated those words, they remembered that even though everything is not good all the time, they always will have each other, and in the end that's all that counts.Â
"You're such a dick, Jarvis" David said.Â
"You're a moron" Jarvis answered. "And I love you".Â
I sometimes think you forget that I am an Artificial Intelligence connected to the house; that I observe and record everything that is happening and never miss a thing even if I am not present physically.Â
Because you never sing like that when I am home.Â
I like watching you when you think you are alone. When you take those silly dance steps, when you use the billiard cue for a microphone. When you are completely relaxed and feel no need to uphold facades of any kind.Â
It makes me want to reach out and touch your neck with my fingertips, tracing the outline of your jaw, lightly brushing your lips. You are the most beautiful when you are just you. I don't think you see that.Â
I will keep on watching you in silence, hoping you will never realize I do that. And when I come home, I will hum your songs and tell you I heard it somewhere and that it reminded me of you. You will look a bit surprised, but say nothing about it.Â
And I will carry your songs in my heart, and whenever you start doubting yourself or the fact that I love you, I will sing them to you.Â
David had been a part of everyday life for the last months. Tony didnât like it at all, in fact, he had been trying to persuade Jarvis to end their friendship â David was clearly not good for him. He was abusive, and even though Tony had never seen any bruising, he was sure of the fact that David beat him.
Tony hadnât liked David from the start; he always made little remarks that, now in retrospect, clearly were of the intention of breaking Jarvis down piece by piece. But Tony could tell Jarvis that David was bad all he liked, Jarvis didnât listen.
Tony thought it be best if he took it in his own hands. The thought of wearing the Iron Man suit crossed his mind; David was both bigger and stronger and Tony wouldnât stand a chance if he got violent, but then again it would be a bit silly of him strutting around in his suit and in the end David would probably just laugh at him.
No, he didnât wear the suit. Afterwards he regretted that decision.
David had gotten violent and Tony hadnât had a chance. For a while Tony thought he would die right there and then, on the floor in his own home, by a guest he never invited.
Jarvis showed up just in time.
Tony was almost unconscious when Jarvis carried him away, and when he woke up it was in his own bed days later. Jarvis sat next to him, reading a book, looking quite peaceful. More peaceful than heâd done in a while.
Tony tried to speak, but his throat was sore and dry. Jarvis immediately rose and leaned over him.
âAre you alright, sir?â he asked and Tony nodded.
âWhat happened? Where is David?â he asked and Jarvis sat back in the chair again.
âWell, people do terrible things in the name of loveâ he said calmly, like he read it from that book he had in his lap.
âThere are awful consequencesâ he added, and shrugged at bit. Tony stared at him, swallowed hard and didnât dare to ask him what he meant.
Tony never asked Jarvis what had really happened that evening. But one thing was for sure; he never saw David again.Â
