I love David Almond’s writing, and this was another beautiful (if relatively short) story, focusing on a young boy in WWI England. Almond does a fantastic job showing how the so-called complexities of war look through a child’s eyes, but he also shows how adults can get caught up in war fervor and propaganda without necessarily realizing that they aren’t really thinking about it. I remember reading this book in primary school and it’s one of the things that got me believing in angels. Not just the story, but he author. David almond spoke about how he grew up in a small town as a child and he saw stories in every person he met. He said the town he grew up in added a sense of beauty, adventure and mystery.
