In S9 "The Gone Dead Train" the "Lets give Catherine the rabies scare" episode .... we also get David "Super Dave" Phillips doing his first SOLO autopsy.

Meanwhile, since then, we've never really seen him doing another one. Then now in the episode for his high school reunion it's established he graduated in 1998. Given we see him in S1, that means he is at the lab by 2000. So, likely he began working at the lab that year as he likely had to have at least an associates degree. I would presume he was able to get the solo as 1) he's now been at the lab 9 years and 2) he probably was continuing his education.

My thing is more this: it is entirely reasonable that he could have been working this entire time to be earning his doctorate in forensic pathology. Like, yeah he is doing the exam in this episode as well. But like ... its the way the episode is designed to be all "oh no he isn't a doctor how tragic" when by this point he easily could be and reasonably should be or at least could be near to it. Working nights, classes during day. Make some show excuses of "well since I was going specifically for a degree in this Doc Robbins talked to my advisors and the sheriff and worked out my residency to be between here and" type thing. (which could easily further play into why it has always so frequently been him out in the field - yes Doc Robbins has the two artificial legs but hasn't prevented him going out on some cases when the show wants it)
