David had a long, hard shift.  When he finally got off for the evening, he figured he was in for a night of falling asleep on his recliner while watching Scrubs and eating some leftover pasta.  When he saw Daniel sitting over at a table, he erased those big dreams out of his mind for the moment as we walked over to him.  He'd known Daniel for maybe, three months now?  David thought he was pretty cool with his swoopy hair and his friendly personality, but they didn't have a lot of opportunities to see each other outside of his work.  Daniel didn't live in Traceless, and David didn't usually leave Traceless.  "Hey!” He waved. “What are you up to?"  He asked his friend.

David, though generally good-natured, sometimes had a bit of a temper. It was something he always tried to control, and over the years he’d been good at not sweating little things. But well, it was a little hard for him when his landlord came to the door and demanded an increase in rent when he signed his lease for the next year. Not if. David had been livid. Why just him? Why weren’t the other tenants getting their rent increased? Why is no other apartment building needing to raise theirs? It was also a simple matter that David made a teacher’s salary and only crumbs from his side projects. He couldn’t really afford to take on an increase. He relayed all this to Elsa, ranting at her while she studied. “And honestly, I guess I’m going to have to move, but then that’s another round of deposits for rent and utilities.”

David was finding that suddenly being a vampire sucked a whole lot more than suddenly being a woman.  After finally finding the entrance to the tunnels he’d heard so much about growing up, he ran down various dark hallways, led only by the intermittent signs placed here and there and definitely not in an orderly way.  Finally, about twenty minutes late for his shift, David arrived at the inside of somewhere familiar for the first time all day.  The café.  And another familiar sight: his sister!  “Hey, Allie! It’s me, David.”  He moved to the back of the counter.  “I know it’s really confusing, but I can answer anything you want to prove it...wait, what are you doing behind the counter?  Were you looking for me?  And also, have you seen Mike?”

“It’s not to late to turn back now,” David warned Millie on the edge of the woods. “We’re going to do some very dangerous stuff. It’s not for the faint of heart,” he added, adjusting the violin case on his back. They both knew of course this was all talk and Millie was definitely the tank here, but it didn’t hurt to act like he knew what he was doing. David sort of planned ahead; he’d packed a healing potion, rosin, and their lunch in the outer pocket. The essentials.

David was late, and only because he’d had such a hard time finding an outfit at such late notice. He wasn’t really planning on coming--events like this were more Allie’s thing. And besides, the ball cut into his bedtime. But apparently all his friends were there, and if he was honest with himself he didn’t want to be left out. Now was the moment of truth, since he’d specifically told Scout he wasn’t coming. David finally found a woman who looked like Scout from behind and gave it his best shot. He tapped her on the shoulder and said, “Surprise.”

When he was with Elsa, David seemed to lose track of time. She had a lot of energy, but she never seemed to mentally tire him out. They were sitting around her living room like they’d started to do a few nights a week, ordering pizza and watching movies. David always looked forward to it. The pizza halfway eaten, they’d decided to forego paying attention to the movie, in favor of talking. David had a lot of icebreakers stored up in his head, and some he’d written down, so he wouldn’t forget to ask them. “Okay, what’s your favorite book?” He asked Elsa in return from the question she’d asked him, reaching for another slice as he waited for her answer. 

David was grabbing something quick from the café before headed back to school. Overall this was his favorite time of year: even though the weather never changed in Icaria, he was back in his element teaching students, and he couldn’t place it, but he always felt cozier this time of year. His hands occupied with his coffee and sandwich, he opened the café door by walking backwards into it, and wasn’t exactly watching where he was going. He felt himself knocking into someone. “Oh gods, I’m so sorry--” He sputtered, before seeing who he knocked into come into focus. “Oh, Zella, hi.” Of all the people to hit with the door, it had to be the sister of Allie’s fiancé. As that part of Allie’s life was absolutely traumatizing to her, David spent most of his time not dwelling on it for his sister’s sake. But there were still physical reminders. Zella, for instance. “I’m really sorry. Were you just coming in?”

Spotting the short, blonde woman handing out tickets through the counter, David made his way to the front of the theater and waited patiently in line until it was his turn. He noticed she wasn’t fully paying attention, but that made it all the more fun. “Two for uhhh, whatever movie is playing during your break.” He smiled at Elsa. “How about it? Or are you already tired of all the movies playing?”
