Shane is someone who is aware of the dark side of hockey actually Rachel and part of what drives him to be such a phenomenal hockey player is... he saves all his feelings about it for the ice.

That's why he needs hockey, despite the racism in the sport; because the racism also exists outside of hockey, but here he has an environment where he gets to slam people into walls about it and be praised.

People can't see it, (they just think he's a scary 'hockey robot'), because Shane burns cold instead of hot. An opponent does something another player would throw gloves for? His response is to just play harder.

And he doesn't get in fights because: 1) he's not stupid enough to land himself in the sin bin just when his team needs him most, that's just bad hockey in his opinion; it would hand the other team such an easy win if he fell for it. 2) yes as a captain it's his duty to fight if someone goes for one of his guys, but if his team-mates aren't getting to his target before him (see point 1) then frankly they aren't doing their jobs. 3) if he ever started fighting... he wouldn't be able to stop. So he can't afford to start. He might go as far as giving a devastating chirp about the deficiencies in their game, but that's it.
