You may have grown up calling these bright little frogs “poison dart frogs.” However, they are now frequently referred to simply as “dart frogs” without the poison part being included. This is because dart frogs have become a popular pet to breed in captivity, and when bred in captivity they exhibit no poison. In the wild, they are some of the most poisonous creatures on Earth, so why not in captivity? It turns out the frog’s ecology is responsible for its poison. The frogs eat a certain species of ant, and that ant eats a certain species of tree. The ants consume and concentrate specific alkaloids, which then in turn are consumed and concentrated by the frogs eating the ants. In the end, the concentrations are so high in the frogs that they can become deadly to most predators, which is why they advertise their poison with bright colors.
