Ok last post about Darnold for now I promise but my favorite and personal read of him in the original series is that he is just as boundary-breaking and game-playing as Benrey, but hasn't figured out that's because he's in a game and thus is compelled to take up sort of a hauntingly eldritch presence like Benrey did.
Darnold just genuinely thinks when he makes potions that they do all that. He doesn't realize that he's manipulating code or that the fabric of his reality is a virtual simulation. He found out it was flexible and instead of asking himself why it's so flexible and what that means in a way that spirals into a crisis, he was just amazed! Wow! A whole new realm of possibilities only accessible through his potions!
Black Mesa gave him his own whole department for potions because the faculty, bound by their nature as AIs that aren't self aware, couldn't fathom any explanation for what he was able to accomplish other than it being a genuine scientific marvel. Maybe Benrey envisions or accesses a more literal menu, brings his options to himself with an interface just like GMod. But the ritual of crafting potions works just fine as a conduit for turning Darnold's curiosity and imagination into a tangible influence :)
