moonlight is Not terf coded 

moonlight lives in an all female society yes. they have a gender based system that sends tomkits away at 6 moons old and keeps mollies to live in the group. they take mates from outside the group to keep it going. thats how the sisters work. they are a family group. all the sisters are related to each other. that’s an important detail.

this fandom seems to see moonlight as the leader of an all female group and go ‘okay, this character is lesbian coded’ and thats a fine headcanon, i have no issue with that. the issue i have is when people go ‘okay this character is lesbian coded, and therefore must be a terf’ 

the assumption that all lesbians must be man hating terfs is incredibly lesbophobic and also is missing what ‘terf’ actually means. terf stands for Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist. a terf is a woman who specifically hates trans women and men. it does not just mean ‘woman who hates men’ or ‘lesbian who hates men’, it is specifically targeting trans people. by saying ‘if youre a lesbian you must be a terf’ you are harming the trans and gnc lesbians that terfs are explicitly targeting. 

lesbians are also allowed to say they hate men without being labelled as a terf. men are oppressors to lesbians and we’re allowed to express how it makes us feel to live in a society where all women are expected to end up with a man. even trans women often say they hate men, that doesnt make them terfs. you cant be a terf just for purely hating men because being a terf is about hating trans women and surprise! trans women arent men 

and back on moonlight, she doesnt even fit the incorrect assumption of what a terf is. nowhere in the books does moonlight imply that she hates men, she specifically talks about how important toms are to the sisters and how special their role is in the group. 

To address the first ask, simply being uncomfortable with Moonlight, doesn’t make her terf-coded, even if you’re trans yourself. It’s fine to be uncomfortable with her, she’s a morally grey character with questionable motivations. I completely understand not liking her and I’m not trying to force you into liking her but she still isn’t terf-coded. 

Coding a character is a very specific thing. Coding is writing a character specifically to imply they are part of a certain group. A transcoded character for example, would be an individual who goes by a different name to their birth name, dresses in a different way to their birth gender, and expresses a disconnect from their birth gender in some way.  A terf-coded character would be a woman who explicitly shows hatred for and is attacking transwomen and is trying to make them uncomfortable and unsafe.

 Moonlight isn’t terf-coded because unfortunately, there are no canon trans women in warrior cats. Moonlight shows no opinions, good or bad, about transwomen in any of the books she appears in. Her treatment of Tree, while bad, was not coming from a place of transphobia. Having headcanons about Tree being trans or nonbinary are fine but you can’t apply those headcanons and use them as justification for Moonlight being a terf because they are just headcanons. If you headcanon Moonlight as a terf I’m not going to stop you (but that is kind of weird) but that still doesn’t mean she is terf-coded. That’s your personal thoughts and does not change the canon text of the books. 

Also to address the lesbophobia comment, this is lesbophobia. The idea that Moonlight thinks ‘women good men bad’ because she runs a female only group is lesbophobic. That isn’t something Moonlight ever implies in the books. She didn’t personally create the system that has toms leave the group while mollies stay. She just happens to be the current leader when they arrive in the series. 

This idea has come from a place of lesbophobia because people see ‘leader of a woman only group’  and go ‘lesbian’ and from there go ‘man hating lesbian’ and then ‘man hating lesbian means terf’. If you’ve never encountered this trope before and didn’t realise that’s what this is, thats fine but please understand that this is a common thing to happen to any character who people decide is a lesbian.
