As a norwegian I'd just like tobadd that norwegian masculinity ideals are the least toxic on the planet. Men cook, clean and share housework without doing it as a favour. Dads don't condider it babysitting when they are alone with their babies/toddlers. Gender equality is the norm, and those who reject the norm usually end up without a partner or children. This is ofc positive for gay men as well. That said, there's still a long way to go - society still struggle with
feminine men. But last year there was a story in the news abt an english boy who was denied acsess to the church playgroup bc he wanted to wear dresses instead of pants. Sth like that would never happen in Norway.
Interesting, thanks! I’m Irish and don’t claim to know anything about Norwegian culture. It’s great that gender equality is important to so many Norwegians, but I think toxic masculinity is a unfortunate symptom of the heteropatriarchy we are all forced to live under (which then manifests itself in different ways; some harsher than others). I wasn’t trying to be critical of Norway if that’s how it came across by the way, I just think Isak’s internalized homophobia was definitely in part a symptom of toxic masculinity - I think all homophobia is!
